33 feared dead in Ogun as Coaster bus plunges into River

No fewer than 33 passengers were feared  dead yesterday  when a coaster bus loaded with passengers skidded-off  a dual carriage bridge and plunged into a river at J4, Ogbere -Ijebu stretch of the Sagamu – Ore expressway, in Ijebu East Local government area of Ogun state.

It was gathered that the bus sank immediately it plunged into the river and was reportedly swept away from the point of entry to the river.

It was learnt that, there were  three survivors who include  a pregnant woman who were said to have been   hung between a tree branch.

Confirming the incident, the Unit Commander, Ijebu – Ode Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Seidu Isah Osilama, said the FRSC  opera-tives   arrived at the scene of the accident few minutes after it occurred.

He however said  that  they were able to rescue the three survivors because, according to him, they fell off the bus and landed on a tree.

According to him, the  rescue effort would require crane and divers to ascertain the location of the bus and the passengers inside the water.
He said  no one knows  the exact number of passengers in the bus or the casualty figure as they are still in the water.

The survivors have been taken to hospital in Ore in Ondo state.

The Head of Operation of the FRSC in Ogun, Mrs Cecilia Alao also, said  that the accident occurred at about 12 noon when the driver of the 36-seater coastal bus slept off.

Alao said that the exact number of passengers and the registration number of the vehicle were yet to be ascertained.

She said that all the victims, apart from the driver, were women travelling from Lagos to Benin to attend a burial ceremony.

The FRSC head of operations, who described the rescue operation as difficult, said that the command engaged the services of local divers who helped to rescued three of the passengers.

‘’We also hired a crane to pull the vehicle from the driver but after trying from 12 p.m to 6 p.m, we could not find the bus and other victims apart from the three.

‘’All other efforts to locate the vehicle and the victims proved abortive, the operation will continue over the night as we are not going to relent in our efforts,” she said.

  8. Its a pity, but wait who was there to see that the driver was sleeping? FRSC should stop all these lies. Rather than calling on the FG to build strong barricades around the bridge, they are here lying. A lot of such bridges abound on the Benin-Ore, Warri-PH, Abuja-Lokoja highways.

  21. Okay I am not one to believe too much in superstition but in the last 3months there have been what we call all these freak accidents in Ogun state. If it is not a crane from a trailer crushing people to death, it is a truck hitting an oncoming bus and burning the occupants of the bus to death, or a car full of people plunging into bystanders now this. That place must have some evil going on there and needs cleaning. Gov AMosun better call a state day or month of prayer unless it is the work of your hands

  52. This is 'regrettably lugubrious'.
It aches my heart each time I read stories like this. Deaths that could have been avoided in one way or the other is left to hold sway. A tanker carrying fuel tumbles and to an 'okada' man and some villagers that's manna from heaven but when it lights, scores of souls are sent parking from the terra firma of the living. A pilot checks the air worthiness of his baby (air craft) and then finds some malfunctions but he is asked to still fly, a black soul screams Ole! Ole! Ole! on his creditors and before anyone would have the chance to say Jack Robinson, community infidels round up the innocent unsuspecting victims and crush them like ants, a party freak soaks himself with booze in a party after which he grabs his steering to cruise back home and when it 'gbhams!', we shower the black king with myriads of 'acolades', an 'agboro' turns to the NPF for recruitment and because the 'oga kpata-kpata' is his relation he is given an AK-47 with life bullets to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians and when tomorrow he showers bullets on innocent and armless Nigerians they say it's an accidental discharge, a contractor is paid to fix a dilapidated road but he pockets the money after settling the big-wigs and when souls are slaughtered on the same road he comes on the radio or over the T.V to make careless and unfounded statements, a young man joins a cult group on campus and when the table is turned against him, he grips the hem of his ancestors garments, a man consumes huge quantities of 'shepke' before clutching the steering of his car and when it happens we rigor twitch our faces in pain. I still maintain that these deaths could have been avoided.
Now men are forced to be widowers and children, motherless because of a minor avoidable 'odd'. Before any driver would even seat in the drivers corner, he should be mentally and psychologically stable if not the inevitable is sure to happen.
*sighs*...may their good souls rest in peace and may God grant their families the strength to carry on.
