'Before our mum died, she couldn't recognise us' - P-Square open up

What Peter Okoye told an Encomium magazine reporter:
She has been diabetic for years, and when it started many months back, we got good doctors to treat her in Jos. But when we couldn't get good result, we brought her to Lagos. We took her to St Nicholas Hospital and everybody who went to see her in the hospital cried. She had lost a lot of weight and couldn't recognise us. She called me Jude. I can never forget that day.

She went through a lot and gradually she got stabilized thereafter she was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) and she spent two to three weeks there. So we thought of moving her to South Africa, India or the US for proper check up. We eventually took her to India about four weeks ago and we talked every one hour. The Indian doctors made sure to clean everywhere before the surgery, and the operation was successful. Our sisters who were with her confirmed this to us and we were very happy to hear the good news. She was okay before the eventual death and for a day one of my sisters was unconscious because she couldn't believe it.

We wanted to travel to India the following day she died (Thursday July 12) but we changed our plans. Her body arrived Lagos on Sunday July 15th. No concrete arrangement yet on the burial.
Mrs Josephine Okoye was in her early 60s and was a pastor living in Jos. She's survived by her husband, 7 children, and 4 grandchildren. May her soul continue to rest in perfect peace, amen.

  11. What I don't understand is that with all the money P-quare have, why did they send their mom to India for treatment??? They could have sent her to UK or America! Even before sending her to India, why did they waste so much time treating her in nigeria?? This is very strange! May her soul rest in perfect peace!

  23. Anonymous 10:14pm, incase you don't know..India is among the top ranked countries in terms of General medicals, surgery and most health concerns issues. So it's not that they do not have the money to take her to US. It also has to do with proximity, bookings with hospital, urgent medical visas and other reasons.

May she Rest In Perfect peace.

    ReplyDelete
  24. all of you making empty noise on their choice to send their mother to India are just silly. bear in mind that these boys are not doctors and would have relied on advices from doctors. why do we always want to find faults in people's decisions. the woman in question is their mother and you guys cannot tell me you love her more than they do. death is a debt we all owe and if it doesn't happen now, it will happen some day when God appoints. may her soul rest in peace and may God console her family at this difficult time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kai, Its sad, Her soul is resting in peace.

Mind you almost all the good doctors in UK, US and all these places being mentioned are Indians oh. If you know nothing about India when it comes to healthcare, ngwanu shut it. Besides i'm sure they love their mother more than any of us here and they did what was right. Did Yar'adua go to UK or US? No! The world is bigger than UK and US oh, each country is good at something.UK and US are shit at many things and the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  26. may her poor soul rest in peace..but india is not the best choice when you have all the resources available to you..even south africa is better...even though many doctors in the us are indians, and asians, they have the best in technology and advanced medicines, at their disposal.....i have lived in the us for almost 20 years, ...and the one thing keeping me here is the level of medical care...the hospitals are like five star hotels...childbirth in America so wonderful!!!...it is outstanding, amazing, and makes me awe struck...beke wu agbara!!!!

    1. Preach jare! All these fools opening their dirty mouth to defend Indian doctors....like they have used one themselves!!! North America and Europe have the best technology, standards and doctors! Whether you like it or not, ok! I'm saying this from self experience, like the above comment! Even in the post it is mentioned that they had to make sure the place was clean, why??? Is it not a standard routine to maintain a room clean for surgery???? I guess not in India!

      Delete
  27. Indians are very good at health care, Check out 80% of Gp's and surgeons in uk are all indians, ask anyone that knows about surgery they would confirm this to you, OBI EMELONYE uk/nigeria film director had his kidney transplant in india successful, so many others ask ckn.

even financial sectors in uk, indians are dominating that, doing very good, one of the best export in world economy .

  30. For the annon at 12:04 pm shut up if u don't know much about what u r commenting on. While, I do not question their taking their mother to Indian ( it is their prerogative and they may have a reason for that), I find it very ridiculous that some are comparing the medical care in India to that of the US. It is like comparing darkness to light. It is not factual for u to say that the US hospitals are filled with Indian doctors. While there are Indian doctors in the US, their number is very very negligeble when compared to the number of American, Jewish and other doctors. And what about medical facilities? Would there be any basis to compare the two countries? I don't think so. The US, bare none, has the best medical care money can buy. The draw back, is that it's very expensive and out of the reach of many.

So, if u have money and u can afford it, better go straight to the US for medical care, don't even give going to India a thought.

  36. INDIA na wash. What most people don't know about India is that there are as many bad hospitals in India as there are in Nigeria.

Also Indian hospitals are 100% about the money. India is very far from the best.

    ReplyDelete
  37. so painful. my sincere condolences to the entire Okoye fam. as for those questioning their decision to send their mom to india, y'all need to have ur head examine like seriously!!! u think u care about their mom more than them? haven't y'all heard that Indian has one of the best medical systems in the world? and who said if they had taken her to the US or UK that she would hv lived? bottom line is that it was her time and she has gone to be with her maker! so drop ur condolences and move on to the next story and stop making analysis like u r gonna contribute a dime for her burial.

Bottom line, the children wanted the best for her and they flew her to where they thought she could get best care. Why are you drinking panadal for another man's headache?

  63. RIP to Mrs Josephine Okoye... Those saying they should have taken her to the UK, US, Moon, yadayadayada!! Take a min and hush!!

With d story above, I am sure she was treated well. May be the stage of d diabetes was advanced and nothing could be done..

My mum has a case of diabetes & ulcer but we manage it well!!! It means we have to cook seperate meals, she avoids carbs like a plague.. Instead of pounded yam she eats wheat and plantain amala. If she must eat rice, there must be bean or vegetables soup at least..

Some of the food we eat in Nigeria doesn't help matters. Me for instance, I knw my grandma had diabetes b4 she died, my mum has too so i don't eat sugar. I stop eating sugar actively (lol) since i was a kid. If there's no natural honey (nt the fake one oo) I take lipton, milo, ovaltine, and cereal, oat porridge without sugar. It actually tastes better! :) Beans and other proteins is my best friend :) .... I have started eating healthy from my early years & I am in my early 20s.

We can't predict our health but we can help ourselves..

    Psquare take heart!!

  74. You fools comparing India to UK or US, just go and do your research well before you come here to say nonsense. India medical hospitals are one of the best in the world beating UK and US by far. Besides most of the doctors you see in UK or US are typically indians.

I believe she died of pancreatic cancer because diabetes is a major symptom. Nigerian doctors are too dumb to carry out much investigations and they probably did not know before they carried her to india as this disease cant be easily diagnosed. also severe loss of weight is a major symptoms.

People need to takecare of themselves well, do proper check up regularly and please if your condition is getting any worse and u have the means to afford being flown to india or any other better country's medical hospitals, do it asap. HEALTH IS WEALTH!!!
