Nigerian man worked for 20 years under the ID of a man murdered in 1992

54 year Nigerian man, Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole (pictured above), worked for 20 years as airport security supervisor at Newark Liberty International Airport, using the identity of a man murdered in 1992.

Oyewole lived as Jerry Thomas for twenty years until he was arrested yesterday May 14th at his home in Elizabeth after police discovered that the real Jerry Thomas was murdered in Queens, New York in 1992; the same year Olumuyiwa started using the name. He is yet to tell the cops how he acquired Jerry Thomas' personal information.

Oyewole was arrested yesterday after an anonymous tip to Port Authority police.

  15. Its bad but notting new.half of nigerians working and living abroad do so under false names.its not a new gist.when they get in and don't have proper security and background to get certain jobs, they go out and buy another persons identity to secure jobs.its just a way to survive.there are pple whose job it is to steal identities and sell to people looking for jobs.and the truth is that it doesn't come cheap.most times its a continual payment Till death do them part and in the case of our man here till jail do them part...SAD tho...

America is a country full of illegal immigrants, and constitutionally they aware of this. They dont even bother chasing illegal immigrants. That is why getting the visa in the first place is so difficult. He only disguised as someone who is dead for crying out loud! He did not kill the person he was impersonating. Abi. Please there are worse things than only trying to make yourself comfortable while not hurting anyone. I am not saying what he did is right, but please stop acting as if he assasinated the president of the USA!

  52. Why all the insult, If he did not murder the owner of that name,Then he just trying to make ends meet. I am certain he has his own family i.e wife and kids. Hopefully he has not used that name to commit any crime and was only using it to work to take crae of his family. Most poeple that comment on this blog will do the same, they will even use it to get massive loan from the bank and scuttle back to nigeria to live large. Think about all this 419er that dupes elderly citizens just so they can live large. I repeat if he has not committed any (further crime, knowing that obtaining and using the name is a crime) may God almighty deliver him from this problem.

  69. Curious questions emanating from this post.

    1. How and who killed Jerry Thomas? Bimbo Olumuyiwa?(Bimbo should know or have a strong idea)

    2. Who snitched to the police? (definitely someone Bimbo trusts)

    3. Wasn't the employers of Bimbo Olumuyiwa aka Jerry Thomas slack in their background check (after all na Security department the guy dey work)?

In anycase it takes guts to do what Bimbo's done and it takes a Nigerian most times to do stuff like this unfortunately.

The pity is that foreign press or tabloids will highlight negative aspects of our people and forget the mention of worthy Nigerians in the diaspora making giant strides. I hope he gets punished adequately if found guilty.

  79. Wow I have mixed feelings about this.. For him to have reached "supervisory" position in an oyibo dominated and typically political appointed/hiring position, then he must have really proved himself as a good and diligent worker but he didnt have papers so why did he not just come back to naija instead of impersonating to live in the land. If he had his own papers wouldnt he be working with his own name...This is just terrible. They will fry his behind!

  84. Everyone is quick to cast and bind the guy. U do not know his reason. In America a lot of Nigerians are desperate to have papers and will do anything to start working to help the families. A lot of Hispanics do it too... You just gotta be smart about it. If the identity of the man he's using was from New York... Then Newjersey is too close for him to live. He shudda moved far far away. And also not work in a state owned facility. I'm even sure the person that gave him that identity is an American doing mago mago for immigrants. Now I know this is illegal and some of u casting don't care about his story but pls take it easy. He's someone's father

  89. @ Bishop Xerxer do you honestly think "im hammer" anything? I bet all along he was settling someone to keep quite about his real identity. When he did not settle again or enough, the security agents were tipped off.

20 years would have given him the time to acquire his own Green Card if he had regularized his entry.

20 years of living a lie just to reside in America. He must have gotten to the US at 34years of age (prime of his life).

Moral of this: it is not a do or die affair... 99 days for the thief, one day for the owner...

His family and friends will now know that "im paper no complete for America".

  95. Well unfortunately this is the story of many many Nigerians who come abroad in search of a better life. They have to impersonate to make a living while they hustle for their documentations. The diff is it is usually with the consent of the real person. The bigger question here is did he Kill the real Jerry. that in my mind will be the big unforgivable crime.

  102. Trust me this is nothing. Here in England there are thousands of Nigerians and Africans that have been using other people details to work and even buy hundreds of properties. A lot of them (are in their 40s, 50s, 60s, etc) did it cos they weren't born here, their visas had expired or they entered uk illegally. I'm not against it as long as they're only using the fake/assumed identity to earn a living. There was a time here when some Naija people use to obtain bc of dead black people and use the fake birth certificate and obtain one year uk passport, NI, driving licence, bank accounts, mortgage, utility bills, then use all the IDs to obtain British passport. Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Lebanese, Ghanaians, Russians, rumanians, etc, all did. But all that loopholes are closed. The man in the pic was caught cos someone grassed on him, and if he'd been working at a uk airport, he'd have been found out even without anyone grassing on him. He should have done a change of name on the fake ID, then keep his mouth shut so no one blackmail him and he should have walked away from his past - a new life / forget everyone he used to know, etc. His mouth brought calamity on him. He'd probably be deported and banned from entering the US, but it was in England, as long as he didn't kill anyone or fraudulently use the assumed name, through a streetwise solicitor, he'd be allowed to regularise on his real name and would be entitle to UK passport within 12 months of been allow to remain in the UK - because of the length of his continuous presence in the UK, especially if he's been here for over 10 or 14 years, etc. **** If u need to know more on UK Immigration - entry / or to regularise yourself, read the latest issue of "Statement of Change in Immigration Rules" ****

In conclusion, as long as Mr Oyewole did not kill or know or have a hand in the death of the dead man whose ID he impersonated, I don't feel Mr Oyewole did anything wrong. He wasn't born in the US, he probably was unable to regularise himself and he did what he had to do to survive. Older Naija people in UK, US and Europe had a hard time extending their visas when they left Nigeria in the 70s and 80s. Things are much easier now because many Naijas are born in UK, US, Europe, etc, marriage is easier, there less hostile & anti-black immigration rules, better economic climate, etc.

Let's be clear on this, he's not stealing or engaged in fraud like most of our young people who travel abroad solely for this purpose. I beg leave the poor man alone. He's someone's father, brother and uncle who is responsible for a number of people in his family. For those of u that live abroad and have the right paper to work and live as a citizen, be grateful and don't look down on the less privileged.

  114. Excuse any grammatical and spelling errors.
I really like reading the comments on this blog but somethimes i think the world especially nigerians have gone crazy with some of their comments.
Was it stated anywhere that this man killed someone? NO.
    Did he steal? NO
Did he rob anyone at gunpoint? NO
    Has murdered any children? No
I`l tell you what it said.
A man desiring to work left a country where he couldnt find work and went looking for grenner pastures. The only way he could achieve that was by paying to use someones papers for work. He had dilgilently been working paying taxes for the past 20 years. contributing to the economy and feeding his family at the same time withot resorting to stealing.

You better no judge lest you get judged.

  115. Those of you abusing him - that your Aunty that bought your wedding dress for you and that your uncle that your father phones every time rent can't be made could be doing the same thing.
If Nigeria wasn't such a bad place, why would people be checking out in droves?
Your presido eats Gucci rice, you eat Ofada rice and you can't even respect this man's hustle. Unless he was party to the real Jerry's death, then he has committed no sin in my eyes. He committed an offense according to the law of the land. Not morally. There's a diff - mind you what is legal in a country might be amoral.
