'I’ll no longer pay any wage imposed by FG' – Gov Fashola

The Lagos state Governor while addressing workers during yesterday’s May Day celebration, said:
Today I will like to assert that our government will not be stampeded into paying any wage we are not part of negotiating and which the fund to pay them is not provided for and given to us. I recognise that Item 34 of the Exclusive Legislative List gives the Federal Government the power to make legislation for a minimum wage. That is where the power ends. We have complied with the minimum wage since January 2011 long before it was signed into law. We should be left to decide what more we can afford to pay over the minimum to any cadre of worker.”

  2. It is unfortunate that upon all the money Fashola administration makes from double taxation of Lagosian (tenement rate, land use charge, arbitrary fixing of income taxes and appropriating the stamp duty levy which is exclusive preserve of FG etc), he still cannot pay his workers a paltry N18k per month. Rather he pays them what he calls Lagos Salary which is far below the minimum wage. His own too much. He has all the wisdom and every other person is a fool. Msheeeeeeew

  3. Lagos is like 6 states put together, Lagos is overpopulated and u are saying his own is too much, Take the Doctors issue for instance, they said they want same salary as federal government workers, they should be working in lagos den dey should move to federal hospitals. He has too much to deal with, not even Abuja has the kind of issues lagos has to contend with.

  7. Is Lagos now an autonomous state independed of the Federal Government?
Shows also that FG also does their things without thinking first.
All in all, the state of the Nigerian affairs seriously needs over-hauling.

  13. I agree with him totally cos the federal govt. Failed to access the finacial capability of each state to their capital expenditure on other area of development and establishment. Is high time the federal govt stop playing

  14. Olodo, understand what he meant. Government impose payments and they fail to provide funds for the state. Need I also remind you that there is partiality when allocating funds to lagos state. We have the highest population and given one of the lowest funds in nigeria. So what he meant was no imposed payment which am sure will be high due to population compared to funds provided for the state. AC vs PDP things am sure.

  16. @Anonymous May 2, 2012 04:58 AM I wonder how you can advise the fella to read and understand.

Obviously, Gov. Fashola's ITK posture is seemingly getting out of hand. Lagos State government is constantly harrassing both corporate and individuals on tax payments.

No State has the level of businesses as concentrated in it. The amount of internally generated revenue far exceeds the projections of every State in Nigeria.

Therefore commenting on the minimum wage with the aim of positioning the Fed govt as having imposed wages beyond their income makes Lagos State mischievous and only out to shame the federal govt.

Fashola should go pay Lagos Doctors and stop pretending that he is smart.

U made ur point but we aint commenting on ur points.will u send ur child to a sch where dey pay 500k wen u earn 250k? We are making comment on what fashola said which is he is paying minimum wage but if federal govt wanna increase it they should be ready to make d funds available. So I suppose anon 12:58AM. Abeg go back to sch.

  17. I think his right, he has complied to the Federal Govt minimum wage any extra thing should be decided by the state Govt based on its revenue, U̶̲̥̅̊ don't always force states to carry out certain responsibilities becos of their financial base.

  18. They actually make a lot of sense. What the governor just said is that basically if the FG raises the minimum wage requirement again, he is not willing to give it to the people ("let us decide what we can pay").

  23. The population of Lagos state workers is the largest in Nigeria and Lagoss does not receive the largest from federal government. lagos is 12 states combined in one.

  25. First anonymous....u really to read again. Fashola sed he won't be paying FG wages again unless FG provides for it. Why should he pay for staff not working under his govt na? Does that make sense to u?

    ReplyDelete
  26. to anonymous @12:29, fashola is actually willing to pay above the minimum wage, beyond what the gov adviced, so please read and understand before commenting next time.

Was probably rushing to be d first. Mtchew

  29. I'm a civil servant in Lagos state, he lied by saying he's been paying since Jan 2011..what he paid was d consolidated lagos state salary which was promised under Tinubu regime. He hurriedly implemented it in order to sidestep paying the 18000naira minimum wage, wot we r paid is 12500naira..they even stopped paying us leave allowances n also increased tax deductions...dis pple are no saints as they appear to be, enough said !

  30. Argument for
Fashola won't pay the minimum wage if the government fails to make provisions for it. Why should he?

    Argument against
Lagos state generates more revenue than any other state. Why should he not?

All in all he's just saying if the federal govt cannot afford it, they shouldn't put the burden on the states. He'll pay what he can afford. That's what a capable leader should do.

  33. if governors are paid the same salary irrespective of the state they govern. Why should a Lagos state Doctor be paid less than other states paying the conmes rate. Lagos will continue to lose the best doctors to federal hospitals and other states. The whole purpose of the conmes is to ensure you have good salary anywhere a doctor is working even in the rural area. Lagos Doctors should earn more. After all they pay more for rent. Do you want a less than the best treatment?
