Indian Child Bride Has Marriage Annulled

Laxmi Sargara was only a year old when her family married her off to Rakesh, who was only three years old at the time. When Laxmi and Rakesh grew up, they did something unprecedented. They had their marriage annulled, reversing the very archaic Indian tradition and opening the door for more child couples to follow.

A few days after her parents gave her a deadline to move in with her in-laws, 18 year old Laxmi reached out to social worker in India who advocates for children's right, asking for help. The social worker contacted Laxmi's husband, who agreed to an annulment.
It is the first example we know of a couple wed in childhood wanting the marriage to be annulled, and we hope that others take inspiration from it," Kriti Bharti, the social worker who orchestrated the annulment, told AFP.

    Haba! Her parents did not send her to her in-laws till she was 18years. If she no gree, na divorce or annulment. No molestation here cos she don reach 18 yrs.

    Good for both of them. These people need to grow up and stop forcing their kids to live with partners they didn't choose themselves. I hope the others will take a cue from them.

    first anon .... learn to read. it is not Pedophillic Molestation. the marriage was contracted when they were children but not consummated. She is 18 years old and she was just told to move to his house.

    GOOD ON HER! ITS WROND FOR ONES PARENTS TO MARRY YOU OFF TO SOMEONE BEFORE YOU LEARN TO EVEN SPEAK. PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO MAKE THEIR DECISIONS. VERY WRONG AND I'M GLAD THIS LADY GOT HERS ANNULLED!
