Hausas and Yorubas clash in Lagos over murdered youth

Agiliti, Mile 12, Lagos, erupted in violence that lasted for hours on Monday as some Hausa youths clashed with their Yoruba counterparts.

The clash, which started around 7am, began when some Hausa youths allegedly attempted to dump the corpse of a man they had reportedly slaughtered in the Maidan River.

A man, who declined to give his name, told our  correspondent that, “This morning, we were not far from the river when we saw the Hausa youths trying to dump a corpse in the river. We immediately accosted them and demanded to know where they got it from and what happened to the man. The youths told us he was caught during a robbery.

“The body showed that the man had been brutally beaten. It was noticed that he had been slaughtered too. So, we asked them why they killed him and why did they not hand him over to the police if he was a robber.
“Before we know it, the whole area had been roused and we had been overwhelmed by the Hausa youths. We had to leave the scene after some scuffle.”
The youth told our correspondent that the Hausa residents who stayed behind later burnt all motorcycles in sight.
When our correspondent got to the scene, a large crowd of youths, who were speaking Hausa, were seen destroying shops and kiosks on three streets in the area.
A police helicopter hovered in the sky, while nine police patrol vehicles and a Rapid Response Squad’s Armoured Personnel Carrier were stationed at the scene, but this did not deter the youth from destroying shops.
Three streets; Nuhu Oluwo, Oniyanrin and Adeyeye, were completely taken over by the Hausa youth who wielded clubs, pipes and machetes and other weapons while they ransacked every shop on the streets.
Some of them broke into a shop, pulled down the door and carried away two air conditioners they found inside.
Some of the youth also attempt to pull down the roof of the shops.
Our correspondent noticed that they had earlier broken into other shops on the streets. Other youths were seen grabbing loafs of bread in a shop they had broken into.
However, some older Hausa men were seen appealing to the youth to stop the violence.
A youth who brought out an amulet and wore it on his arm, was told to pocket it, while another man, Alhaji Gambo Limani, slapped a youth who broke a bottle on the ground and wielded it as a weapon.
When our correspondent later spoke to Limani, he said, “I had to caution them because most of these youths are hoodlums. They would blow the problem beyond proportion.
“I really don’t know the basis for this whole crisis because I just got back from Sokoto this morning. My main concern is to ensure they don’t cause crisis in this area.”
When our correspondent asked Limani about the whereabouts of the Sarkin Hausa (head of the Hausa community) of the area, he said the Sarkin had travelled.
Our correspondent reports that Oniyarin Street was completely deserted and the majority of the residents locked themselves up in their residences.
When asked why the area was deserted, a youth said, “These people (Hausa men) are many in this area. They inhabit most of the houses here. Anybody who has his life to protect should not attempt to go close to that area.”
Our correspondent watched from a safe distance as the rampaging youths smashed the windscreen of a bus in the presence of the policemen who made no effort to stop them.
The youths spoke in Hausa, occasionally pointing their sticks at the policemen to dare them.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state, Mr. Tunde Sobulo, later came to the scene and dispersed the youth. He addressed the policemen and gave them directives on how to man the area.
When our correspondent attempted to speak with him, he simply said, “This is operation. I don’t have any comment to make now.”
But the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the police were being cautious because the clash was between two ethnic groups.
Jayeoba said, “The police got a report early this morning about a corpse of a man that was  allegedly killed in Oniyanrin area of Mile 12. Policemen were quickly drafted to the area to remove the corpse. The clash was due to perenial accusations between the Yoruba and Hausa residents.
“In any case, the DCP operations and the area commander have been there to restore peace. The area commander has also invited the heads of the two ethnic groups in the area and all other stakeholders to resolve the issue. Right now the area is calm.”

  2. The hausa-fulani people should sit down and find the genesis of there problem, is it the culture, or their religion or there percussive that their neighbors are weak. The violent mentality of this particular tribe needs to be addressed. Why do you take pleasure in killing people, in Ghana its between Fulani and other tribe, and same in Nigeria. The question now is can we continue to live as a nation with this kind of violence activity from one tribe. What you all need to understand is that yoruba people will never engage in violence without proper justification and they will not start an ethnic-based fight as long as reason can still apply, but one thing am sure of is the fact that once Yorubas decide to fight, they make sure they are ready to carry the fight to a logical conclusion e.g. Ife/Modakeke, and if it comes to that, I doubt there’s little the police can do to maintain the peace. They killed our people in the North, we kept quiet; and now they are killing our people in our own land…When will this wickedness stop?

  3. Sometimes, I wonder if it's the same God we worship that manufactured these lunatics. Every where, Hausa and Fulani always kill for nothing! They destroy your farm land and they come back to attack you for being offended. God help us. They may need to go and form their own country.

  5. The story is different from the headline. The headline should have said 'Hausa Youths murder a Yoruba youth and take to vandalism in the Mile 12 Area".

All and all, this is unacceptable. They are taking their Boko Haram behaviour to Lagos. Yorubas should stop them. Cut off their heads and parcel them back home in one of their lorries. This is sickening!

Now Linda, bia. Where were you yesterday since 7a.m when this news broke out eh? Tell me Linda. How many hours has it been since this story broke out and you are now reporting it. By the way Linda, whose idea was it to give it this kind of heading eh? Do you know it is a very deceptive headline? Enough for me to even send in MASSOB and Egbesu, and Okija to intervene. Because of your laxity Boko Haram are try(apologies, Chief Zebrudaya) to conquer Lagos through Mile12 abi? Now what do I do with you Linda? Last time I sentenced you to be locked in a room with two hefty homosexuals. That one no work. Oya forward match and lock yourself in a room. I am sending two lesbians after you to teach you a lesson on being the first to report the news and properly phrasing your second hand headlines. NONSENSE!

@ Gbenga, yeah you are right. They are tired of killing Ibos. Last I heard, the head of the Boko Harams sneaked into Lagos. While being entertained by his host a yoruba man strayed to the backyard of the place Boko was residing. All of a sudden he got excited, 'weefo weefo, hun hun, I smell the blood of a yoruba man'. Off they went and caught the ofe nmanu to him and slaughter he did him. He died so easily that he wondered why they've wasted time and much much energy and effort trying to kill Ibos .
Seriously Gbenga, I think you are going too far in your tribalistic postings. It's just not good. The handwashing has gone beyond the elbow, serious. Better desist. While you are at it, hope you can grow up.

  34. I have always said that those loud and empty Yoruba hoodlums who call themselves AGBEROS are empty heads and gutless. They shout and intimidate ordinary people when they are helpless, but when hausa youths take over their streets and loot their mothers shop and eat the little agege bread they sell no agbero is in sight to stop them. They all ran away and even the police are afraid to do something about them. Im from Jos and live here in Lagos, a lot of times i have heard people call us all sorts of names when this hausa people attack us and we seem not to do anything about them. How do you even begin to fight someone who really doesn't care about the next minute when you are full of life and have an ambition to be something in this life. That is why this hausa boys can do anything cos they can die for islam and pride. So all of you talking nonsense here should SHUT UP! cos when this hausa boys deciede to take over this lagos believe me OPC will be chicken shit.

  37. @Gbenga the spineless tribalist,
Word is cheap ! No soul is worth more than the other, so stop prattling like a pregnant woman and go out & defend your people before they wipe out your land! This would never happen in Igboland, they cannot dare kill Igbos on Igbo soil,Onitsha & Aba boys will clean them out before they even speak.

The headline seems right, Yorubas are physical indefensive, so shying away is their own way of fighting or as Linda said, clashing. Please stop the fight.

  40. Not all hausas are bad, the same way that not all yorubas are betrayers, and not all igbos are sectionalist. With that said, It is individuals that commit a crime, not their tribe. We have this tribalist mentality, and its what ruined nigeria from the onset and the same thing causing it pain till today. Its amazing how today when igbo are murdered or forced to leave the north some yoruba leaders(not the population) turn a blind eye. Unfortunately for me, I come from igbo on my paternal side, and mixed hausa/fulani and awori-yoruba on maternal side. So for me I know the pains of each differently. I am what nigeria should be,unified. Its good to have pride in your tribe, but we shouldnt be ethnocentric in our believes when it comes to one another.I believe KARMA is A B*tch and until nigeria acknowledges the pains caused during the civil war and try to rectify things, perhaps giving power to rule to a minority tribe, perhaps then this tribal mentality can slow down.i respect and love my western and northern cousins. Just because someone's way of thinking is different from yours doesn't make it wrong.Though i send my condolences to the family of the murdered youth, but until Nigeria deals with the big elephant in the room these tribal clashes will keep happening. It also amazes me that in this answers people keep referring lagos as Yoruba land, ehhh wrong lagos does not belong to the yorubas anymore it belongs to nigeria, abi we are a nation? so from East, west, north to south belongs to nigeria- as in everyone who calls themselves nigerian. I would love to see one day when a hausa man can be a lagos govenor, a yoruba man an imo state governor and an igbo man kaduna's governor and etc. Lets be a nation that will help eachother and heal eachother by mending wounds of yesteryears in the hope of preventing future scars like this.

  45. As much as they say ibo, this ibo thats, i have noticed that the ibos out of the three main tribes are the most tolerating, adopting and accomadating. Coming from edo I wanna marry an igbo man, not a hausa or yoruba cause they are too two faced.I notice Gbenga likes commenting on his hatred for the igbos, its sad that when the hausas come after yorubas they will look to the east and middle belt for help, remember no body knows tomorrow. I think we should all appreciate each others differences, that is what makes us unique as a nation. Gbenga I am praying for you, the rate you are going to fall hard for an igbo girl, or maybe one broke you heart and caused you to be ranting like a mad man. I hope you get help soon.

Yoruba's should wake up. All they know is how to play sycophancy and betray each other.
