Gang Rape: Abia State Govt Denies Rapists Are ABSU Students

Like I told you all on Saturday, we contacted one of the aides of the Governor of Abia State and they told us that they would do an investigation and get back to us. They called me the following day (yesterday) to say they have concluded their investigations. Result - The boys in the video are not students of Abia State University. They called the VC of the school, the VC told them it didn't happen in the school, end of story!

Seriously, I'm not surprised by this statement - no institution wants to be associated with something like this...so I understand...but here's the problem; in fact two issues.

Firstly; One of the girls I spoke with said these boys are from my school. I said what school? She said ABSU. A lot of students there have different versions of this video. And one of them said to me, I don't believe these boys will be caught, we came out with this evidence because we want people outside of this region to know what happens 'sometimes' in these parts. Girls are gang raped and nobody is doing anything about it. Most of the time, the victims don't say anything, and when they do, people ask them 'Wetin you sef do the boys'? Like it's your fault you were raped.

Secondly: How can the school authority say without any reservations that these boys are not their students when their faces didn't even show in the video? Can you tell who your students are by their silhouettes and voices? If there's no Law faculty in Abia State University, then I apologize, maybe I was misinformed; but if there's a law faculty in this school, then I think the school needs to thoroughly investigate this, because one of the boys said he's a 400L student of Law...names were mentioned...

So far, it doesn't look like ABSU is interested in doing a proper investigation. The VC said there's nothing in the video that indicates it's ABSU and has asked Student Union President to issue a statement exonerating the school.

Please continue...

See, here's my point - if these boys' faces had been very clear in the video, and the school authority had taken still photographs from video and passed the photos round the campus to fish out these boys, and students in the school don't recognize any of them, then ABSU can say with all authority that these students are not from their school, but that's not the case here. So saying without any reservations that these boys aren't from their school holds no water.

Well, the State Government and ABSU have concluded their investigations...now it's the turn of the police...let's see what they come up with.

And for those of you who have seen 10 minutes of this video, I hope you don't see the rest of it...I really do!

Below is the statement fro Abia State Government

Alleged Rape Case
The Abia State Government has carried out an investigation on this matter and the truth is that, the alleged video never emanated from the university.

The victim and the perpetrators are not students of Abia State University. Those associating ABSU with such barbaric visor should please desist from such. The university is safe for academic activities as known for.

Thank you

And here's a press release from Minister of Youth Development

Minister Condemns Rape of Young Nigerian Girl, Promises to Rehabilitate Her
The attention of the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has just been drawn to a despicable, immoral and depraved video of a young lady being raped by five men. The condemnable act allegedly took place at the Abia State University, Uturu.

In the video, the young woman was threatened, rough handled, and sexually exploited by the men, who are said to be cultists. To make matters worse, this despicable and wicked act was recorded and circulated by the alleged rapists, who blurred their own faces. This behavior has rightly caused
outrage among young Nigerians, parents and all those who have seen the video recording.

The Honourable Minister views the behavior of the perpetrators as decadent and barbaric; and believes the attitude of these men, if indeed they are young Nigerians, does not represent the character and nature of the Nigerian youth.

Mallam Abdullahi therefore calls on the University authorities and relevant security agencies to step up action to ensure that the heartless and wicked perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. He has also promised to help rehabilitate the young victim if she would make herself available to the Ministry.

The Honourable Minister calls on Nigerian youths to remain focused and positive-minded, disclosing that his Ministry will soon begin to implement programmes that will address their concerns.

11. Linda, since you have access to this video, you can kick start some investigative journalism. names were mentioned. Some faces may be recognisable. There is Facebook, nairaland, hi5 and several other networks out there where people leaves traces of their identity. With very little effort, the full identity of these bastards can be unraveled. But you have to start from somewhere. Government will not do anything in this matter because the victim is not the sister/daughter of an important person. That is the horrible and unfortunate fact in this country. If she was, those culprits would have been apprehended even before you saw that video. You also said that some names were mentioned. List those names. Let us start from there. There is hardly any Nigerian student without a facebook account. Yours is a formidable and fearless blog. PUBLISH THE NAMES THAT YOU HEARD FROM THE VIDEO. Let the search begin from somewhere.

13. When will nigeria change? How can this country even change whn we have people in the government who are not ready to own up to their responsibilities. can you imagine how school authorities would identify people they couldn't even see? i guess when it happens to their daughters, thats when they will know its a serious case. without those criminals bastards being caught others would take up the act believing that they can always get away with it all because some old fart doesnt want the school name to be scandalised so he could continue to have something in his pocket.MAY GOD PUNISH ALL OF YOU IF YOU DONT RISE UP TO MAKE THIS NATION A BETTER PLACE FOR US TO LIVE IN.PHYSICALLY SHE COULD BE HEALED BUT WHAT OF THE EMOTIONAL TRAUMA? IF IT WERE YOUR DAUGHTER WOULD YOU LET GO LIKE THAT? AND AS FOR ALL OF YOU THAT OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO SAY SHE INSULTED THEM AND THEREFORE BROUGHT IT UPON HERSELF, U BETTER ALL SHUT YOUR TRAP.NO MATTER THE INSULT AND EVEN IF SHE SLAPPED ONE OF YOU, SHE DOESNT DESERVE IT. AS FOR THOSE BASTARDS, MAY YOU MEET YOUR WATERLOO SOON

14. We can also escalate this issue to the president Goodluck Jonathan who is an avid member of Facebook. Linda, you can open a thread on GEJ's Facebook page and direct us all to bombard him with appeals to take action and fish out these boys. You cannot expect an Okija-shrine-tainted governor like Orji to take action on this. His conscience is too warped for that.

15. Is this a joke?? It is appalling that in the year 2011 a woman can be treated like this. I have sooo much anger in me about the rape and the way in which the authorities are handling the matter. If it happened to a daughter of theirs would this be the reaction?
Those boys should be skinned alive, and roasted over a spit like the pigs they are.
If any of those bastards are reading this...know that you will get what is coming to you.... a slow and excruciatingly painful death. Also remember you will have daughters too. You will not get away with this!!!!!

17. I wanted to say this yesterday, but I just wanted to believe that this girls case will be different but I doubt it is going to be.

If the girl has not come out till now, even if she found, she will deny the whole thing, she will even say that she was helping them make a porn movie (as if that is not a crime is she is not cooperating) smh. But she will out rightly deny it and blame herself.

The whole of Abia,, including those in power and the country have seen free porn movie and I am sure those in power are all blaming the girl. So because the so called boys might not be Abia state students, the governor has no more hand in the investigation, it is not worthy for him to be involved in.

Really this country thinks that we are all stupid. Really. They steal our money we say nothing, they kill innocent people for oil and we still say nothing. They are allowing men to kill the souls of young girls and we say nothing. Even parents say nothing when their children are being abused my so called uncles living with them. They blame the child. The victim is always blamed in Nigeria.

God help us all. I am sure this is a very common occurrence and no one has done anything about it.

If we can't save ourselves, no one will save us.

26. I PARTICULARLY IS SO ASHAMED TO BE A NIGERIAN..THIS VIDEO IS JUST THE TALK OF THE TOWN, BCOS IT WAS CIRCULATED...THERE ARE MANY THAT R HAPPENING THAT ARE EVEN NOT RECORDED...BUT TO PUT SALT ON AN INJURY, THEY RECORDED IT AND EMBARRASS THE GIRL EVEN MORE..THE GUYS MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE...AND IF THEY R NO JUSTICE IN ABIA (AND HOW CAN THERE BE IF A WHOLE GOVERNOR IS IMPREGNATING HIS FIRST LADY'S SISTER, OR ANOTHER GOVERNOR TRAVELLING INTERNATIONALLY WITH YOUNG SCHOOL AGE GIRLS ), THEN THIS LADY MUST COME OUT AND BE THE SACRIFICIAL PERSON TO PUT AN END TO THIS MADNESS.. SHE NEEDS TO POINT OUT WHO THE GUYS ARE AND DEMAND FOR JUSTICE FOR HERSELF AND THOSE SUFFERING IN SILENCE OR THOSE WHO THIS WILL STILL HAPPEN TO. ( or better still get close to them one by one and bath them in acid.. 'cos they need an everlasting sadness just like what they gave her ... >=)

27. The video needs to be posted online so the public can identify the boys in the video. The girls face can be obscured for privacy

ReplyDelete
28. If the Govt or police refuse to come up with something concrete, then lets take it further. this is what i STRONGLY SUGGEST: since you have the full video clips, lets get it to Video/Image experts who can work on the fussy images of the rapists and come up with clear image/pictures of them, then we paste it! there are expert in US, UK who can work on the video. Then we upload it on every social network and label THEM- Face of a Rapist! With this, there will be no where to hide for them

29. So the 'in short' of the whole story is that these boys will get away with this barbaric behaviour??? This country just makes one want to burst a spleen in annoyance..!!I'm beyond upset,really..I just hope the girl will recover from this trauma..

31. Linda, I can only imgine the pain you are experiencing since you saw that video in full.
I only read your write up and i have not been able to thing straight all weekend.
I was in church on Sunday and i could not get this out of my mind. I kept wondering why God would let this happen.
That girl is damaged for life and the least she can do is come out.
She needs to come out even if anonymously (for a start) and name those boys.
The worst cult boys can do is kill her but i imagine that death is better than the misery she will face in a life time.
Much more, if this is handled properly, she might not even be killed after all.
I said it earlier that the worst thing that happened is not this happened but that it happened in Abia state.
I am from that state and i cn confirm that the state has a special pact with hell, more than any other state in Nigeria. There is something seriously devillish about that state. i am not one to make such spiritual comments but i am convinced that Orji Uzor sold that state to the devil and i doubt if the goods are refundable.
The present governor has no conscience. He does not give a hoot about his.If this happened in Lagos or Ogun or even Rivers state, you could engage the govt.this Abia governor is not a human being.
If this girl can come out and name this boys,i have vowed before heaven and earth, that i will sponsor the assasination of those boys withing 72 hrs.Damn the consequences.
I have a daughter and the thought of her experiencing such made me sick all weekend.
I don't care what the girl said to them,no human being deserves this, not even a prostitute.
To any who has ever said 'wetin you sef do them' to any girl that has been violated by a gang, may your life be embraced by darkness its thickest form.

On another note, Happy birthday Linda.

33. Has any newspaper in Nigeria carried the news of this rape? I'm just wondering. Cos it seems that its the people is diaspora or the young empowered people in Nigeria that are crying fowl and those in power are not interested.

If the journalist in our country, which are supposed to be empowering the people are doing nothing, where are we going in this country.

My head is still spinning at the Abia's governors stance. Truth be told, if it was his daughter, he might also deny it with the way our society is numb to abuse. Our can the VC say his school is safe when he knows people get raped all the time, kai!

@ people saying we should contact Jonathan Goodluck. He would do nothing. He can't keep the people of Jos safe and the country safe, he would not be interested in this? Most people in Nigeria think of themselves only, they don't think of anyone else.

We need to stand up for ourselves o. We need to fight for our freedom. Please people come up with ideas, because I am lost for words and thoughts. Let's rise together, cursing the boys will get us no where, or cursing the governor.

39. I have said somewhere else that it may be difficult to get the guys involved, owing to the quality of the video and the fact that the idiots made sure their faces were not caught by the camera man. What to do now is to get the girl to come out. If she can damn shame and reach out to one of the numerous NGOs that have a mandate for stuffs like this, then this case will be solved the faster. Mind, I am not advocating that she appear in public to be probed by my fellow pressmen. A quite session with an NGO should do it. Think it will do for NGOs to begin posting their names, addresses and phone numbers on blogs like this. We should not let this matter die like this na!!!

ReplyDelete
40. Linda kudos to you for your efforts. we beleive more can be done. pls dont keep quiet cos you are our voice in this matter. the gov of Abia state has a lot to do cos whether the boys are ABSU students or not, the barbaric act was carried out in Abia state which is his jurisdiction. pls pls pls and pls dont let this case slip away or die down like that. we are behind you. love you forever...

41. his so sickening that i feel like throwing up. I don't even have the heart to read the rest of the story.
We have useless govt, police and the whole society is morally bankrupt. So if the rapists are not from ABSU does that legalise their act and ends the case. A criminal act was comitted in a State university, in your state and this is what the state govt came up with? So if you get robbed in your house i guess the govt will tell us that the robbers are not from Abia end of case. Pathetic!!!
I think their should a campaingn for justice for the vicitims through any available means, on facebook, twitter, blogs etc.

ReplyDelete
42. I'm just thinking, with the numerous churches and other places of worship in Nigeria, as any pastor or Imam stood up to cry out against this injustice. Isn't that what Jesus came for, to be a voice for the unspoken for? Isaiah 61 to help heal the broken hearted, set captives free. Don't they see this as a work of the devil that they are supposed to stand up against ehen! We bind the devil in church on Sunday but can't stand up against injustice or face the devil in the face?

Everyone in Nigeria that goes to a church should ask their pastors to stand up against this. Do churches in Nigeria even preach against sexual abuse or any form of abuse? Or they preach beat your wife to submission? Or all they do is abuse women for being dressed shabishly. We need to hold our leaders accountable.

We are all saying where are the NGO's? Aren't churches NGO's? They don't pay taxes. They need to stand up

Where is Okotie, Oyakhilolme, Kumuyi, Adeboye and the leader of Winners in all this. Keeping silent, waiting for God to ask them to move? This should be on the news daily. God I can't stop thinking of how to cause a change no matter how small.

47. My take on the matter;

1) The video evidence confirms the persons are Nigerian.

2) Rape is a criminal offence and best dealt with by the POLICE.

3) The woman in question has she being identified, and given all necessary care and assistance ?

4) The media can pile pressure on the Police to act fast and effectively.

5) The police are trained to collate evidence and track down the persons in the video for questions and possibly charges .

We should follow up this case to a considerable level before we leave it in the hands of the police. If not tackled now, it will gradually become a norm in our universities. 49. I saw this video two days after the incident was said to have happened, all efforts to get the relevant authorities proved abortive. The commissioner for education in the state, the governor of that state, the administration of the school...etc. They are all unreachable. I even tried to reach the minister for education on this, but couldn’t get any contact. I tried all I could to reach them, really I tried, but you can’t see these people, as an ordinary Nigerian citizen, except someone in high place takes you there. Of course you know the Nigerian police would first detain you for reporting, (saying they are investigating), Unlike in the US where you don’t even have to get to the police station, but make calls or send emails. You are a Nigerian; I believe and should know better.

50. for someone to do sch evil I'm sure it was well planned- especially with the blurring of their faces. I can never watch such a thing because It will make me very angry. I am certain that for them to be that bold they target a young woman that they have monitored for sometime- it is likely that she knows one of them very well. She is either quiet and is ashamed to speak up or everyone talks about her as one that sleeps around and she's afraid that if she speaks up one may say she deserves it. Either way rape is wrong and it is a tragedy that this young lady was exploited in this way. I hope this act those not change this woman for the worst.

ReplyDelete
51. Why wouldn’t the Nigerian Police or various governments have functional email addresses and phone numbers where you can reach them?
I had no choice but to go to the press. Yes, I, consernedmother took it to the press. I have been out of this country for years and only returned recently, I wouldn’t have believed that this kind of act could happen in our universities (institute of higher Learning). The students of the University are sure it happened there. This video is all over the campuses in Abia state. Anyone who has a blue tooth phone or a computer has it. I reliably gathered that the video is all over IMSU and FUTO too. Even photographers and traders on Abia state university campus have it. This girl was raped for hours by 5 boys and they treated to kill her in the video if she did not corporate. The version you saw is just 10mins, so you can imagine what this poor child went through. She went through this for hours, in fact it a full video film episode, she begged them to kill her, she told them her father would give them anything they demanded, one of the culprits asked if she would give 1million Naira?. Going to the press is the only way i could bring the relevant authorities attention to this. I had to because since I saw this video I have not been able to sleep. Any mother would be disturbed by this. These boys must be brought to book. As a mother, I have had no rest since saw this video just had to do something. From utterances in the video, one of them said he is a 400level law student, another said he was on his IT, should we allow the universities turn out rapist lawyers. All women must stand up against this. We cannot allow this kind of thing go on in our universities

ReplyDelete
52. This girl could have been our daughter, our sister, a friend. Forgive me if I took the wrong step (by going to the press), to bring attention to this, but my heart goes to the poor child; did they kill her, like they threatened to in the video if she did not corporate?
I wish she could come out and speak, but we do not know if these boys killed her, we have to know if she is alive, its only when you are alive you could probably want to speak about this kind of experience. Form the video; you can see that this is a young girl. It is one thing to be raped, and another to know that all the students in your school and other universities know you were raped and even watched the video. You can imagine the trauma this child will go or is going through, if this girl is alive, I pray she is, she needs to be reached as soon as possible.

ReplyDelete
53. Why these boys would rape her, video it themselves and send to fellow students all over campus, I do not know. They showed the girl’s face, but were careful not to show theirs. One of them told her in the video, that a fine girl like her had the guts to insult their friend; did they do this to punish her? If the police want to investigate this, they can catch these boys; some names were mentioned in the video.
Once again sorry to all those who were upset by the video, this is the only way I could get the relevant authorities attention.
The relevant authorities need to act fact. They can nail these bastards if they want to. Yes they are bastards, if you ever saw the video you would wonder if these guys have a sister or even a mother. These guys need to be castrated or killed, because if let go they would do it again and again.
Only God knows how many other people they have done this to in the past, but this time their cup is full. Little did they know that by videoing this they would get themselves in trouble?
Where ever they are, sure they must be shaken in their pants.

ReplyDelete
54. Names were mentioned. At a point she said ‘’UCHENNA, you in particular, what have I ever done to you’’ another name she mentioned was Chigbo .One of the boys called out to another, Wisdom commot make I do my own. Another one while on top of her said Fine girl like you had the guts to insult our friend, and she says who and he replies Zika or Zitta. You could see all of them changing their condoms taking turn on this poor girl while she begged at one point that they kill her.

55. why am I not surprised? please Linda do whatever you can to bring those responsible to justice.

In fact, you can start by putting up the names you heard on all forms of social media and get everyone to do the same until we find them.

56. It is so so disapointing that the government of this state and the VC of the university would react this way.All they need to do is do a proper investigation.Names were mentioned. There is a law department in that school.all the School needs to do is fish out all the UCHENNAS,WISDOMS,CHIGBOS AND ZITA IN THAT SCHOOL.fOR SURE ONE OF THEM IS A 400L LAW STUDENT.WITH technology available now,the faces of these guys could be zoomed. The students in the school know for sure that these incident was by boys in ABSU,sure they wouldnt be reacting this way ,if it were their daughters.I AM REALLY SO UPSET ABOUT THIS,COS I SAW THE VIDEO

59. People are just scared to identify the guys involved. Imagine a student of the school going to the police to state that he/she knows one of the rapist and the rapist has a connection in the police dont you think the informer would be killed? The reason no one wants to come out to speak is as a result of safety. No one wants to be jesus christ here hence nothing can be done. The police can only help if people speak up. The girl is the only one that can clearly identify these guys, let us all encourage her to come out, protect her then will justice be served. People are just scared to identify the guys involved. 62. I haven't commented on this or posted this story on my blog coz no amount of writing would bring these boys to book if the victim is afraid to comeout and speak.she knows these monsters and maybe considers herself lucky to have been alive.these goats are def connected and dangerous to have done this and recorded it,spared her life (knowing nothing will happen)instead of concentrating on those devils,we should all make an open call to that girl to reveal herself.she needs to be rehabilitated.maybe flown out of the country for security reasons.her family might be living in fear of a reprisal attack by those devils and their cohorts.if she can only come out and talk,I think those cows calling themselves vc's and governors would be put to shame.

ReplyDelete
79. I told my sis dat the school authority would deny it> & yes they did including the state government. How can they carry out an investigation about this in less than 48hours& make such thought provoking statement? it shows the decadence in our government! Its every man for himself. No government looks out for its citizens.Everyone is talking about bringing the culprits to justice who ll press charges? Let the truth be told. only the girl can press charges & except the girl decides to come out we leave the case to the almighty God who rewards us by the work of our hands, melt out the punishment that this boys deserve for this barbaric act. 81. Linda, its sad that you are treating the demise of the poor girl with kids glove. You are not being fair to the poor girl by trying to contain this whole issue on your blog alone by a mere article and some poor shots taken to create a forum for gist lovers. You claim you have more than an hour video clip of the incident with names being mentioned and a 10mins edit taken with your phone. I will strongly advice you post the video on your blog, youtube, and some other well known sites to generate the required response from the international community, general public and government quarters to force the governor to act. I read your earlier post and knew denials with be the order of the day. You have a very strong evidence that should be used to help the girl. Do not wait until the poor girl embark on something stupid and drastic due to her emotional state.

ReplyDelete
86. I watched the first 5 minutes of the video and could watch no more! I'm a guy but I swear I was moved to tears.

The blatant denial by ABSU and the ABSG should come as a shock to only those who STILL have faith in our government. In reality, every observant Nigerian should have realised by now that denial is a fundamental part of governance in 9ja. Dele Giwa, Bola Ige, the Ogoni 12, the Jos crises, and attack by Boko Haram. All left to government to deliver justice. All swept under the carpet, forgotten, covered up or denied.

The sooner we all come to the realization that denial and cover-ups is the order of the day the better for us all.

The onus is on the private individuals (you and I) not the government to ensure that justice is done in this case. we are the ones who know people in this school. We are the ones who have access to the facts and info that the authorities would rather forget.

I find it appalling that the school authorities, rather than do a detailed investigation have opted for a disclaimer. They claim to have carried out an investigation! Let the VC publish the details of the investigation if he is not lying. I openly challenge him!!

89. I have never been one to comment on public sites and stuff but I feel so compelled to voice my frustrations at this deplorable act and shameful reaction by the government. To say that Nigeria is a messed up country is a gross understatement and I no longer try and defend the country to outsiders (b'cos it is what it is...useless - as far as govt and politics are concerned). So the perpetrators were not students of ABSU? So what? that does not make the offence any more tolerable. I am apalled that the GOVERNMENT of the state would dismiss the case simply because they claim it wasn't at ABSU and to save face... What about this poor girl? what if it was one of their sisters, daughters or mothers? Would they turn the same blind eye to the case.

I have written to some women's right group in Nigeria that I was able to dig up online (not that I have much confidence anyway)

But justice is imperative and we must not let this case die down. Enough is enough! Haba!

ReplyDelete
90. Its only in Nigeria that things are not investigated before government claims otherwise! Jonathan did same with the October 1st bombing, any Nigerian who expects otherwise is more like wasting his/her time!

94. i was in tears after watching the video. Gang rape happens in our universities every day. when i was in university somebody very close to me was gang raped by 5 boys, this was over 10 years ago. It has been going on and it will continue to go on until we all come together and say enough!!!! Because of the stigma and embarrassment associated with rapes, many victims do not speak out due to the shame, hence the perpetrators keep going unpunished. We cannot let these 5 boys go unpunished. Their names are mentioned in the video. The law enforcement must do something. This poor girl is scarred for life. My heart bleeds for her. Justice must be served

ReplyDelete
95. all this comments could be putting the poor girl's life in danger expecially if the pepertrators have access to them. ReplyDelete
97. like someone said, i wait for a press release that says ''these video was not made in nigeria''...instead of them to resolve the issue, they deny it. you can never solve a problem without first admitting you have it.

98. This is the most embarrassing moment of the 21st century. How could the Abia Government denies this just bc of politics at the expense of this innocent lady. How many hours do the used to investigate and come out with this barbaric conclusion? Why cant they go further to investigate this issue without any bias? What goes round comes around.May God help and deliver us from hypocrisy.

ReplyDelete
99. I knew it would turn out like this. They want to protect their image. If one of the rapists is related to a government official then he would go scot free. Criminals think before they commit crime sometimes.

It is only when a governor's sister or mother is raped that such rapists would be killed off silently. Which rapists would rape such sisters and mothers? For where?

ReplyDelete
100. Even if heaven falls down, this matter cannot and must not be allowed to be swept under the carpet by that bastard Okija Shrine rat, Theodore Orji. We desperately need the full names (and if possible, date of birth) of those boys. We have to ruin them and their family.

The best thing would be for our petition to end up on Abia State government website. It can force that foolish Theodore Orji to sit up and stop the bullshit and have those 5 animals arrested and locked away for life.

Abia state Governor, Theodore Orji and the VC of Abia State University (ABSU) must stop the cover-up in the rape of a young woman in Abia State. Rape is a criminal offence. It happened in Abia State while Theodore Orji is the governor of Abia State. What other reason does that foolish "governor" need to realise that action needs to be taken against those boys?

I'm not surprised the rotten State govt and Theodore Orji have decided not to act. The state governor have shown how stupid he is. I expected him to do the right thing by using his influence to fast track the investigation through the police. He did arm-chair "investigation" and decided not to act cos he thinks the issue will go away or we give up. To give up is to fail that girl and put other girls at risk of being raped.

Right now, as far as I'm concerned, Abia State governor stupid, full if shit and is no better a person than those 5 criminals that raped the girl. He and them should be locked up behind bars for life.

Linda, please, we must not give up this case until those 5 boys are behind bars where they belong. If we do nothing and allow the school and the governor to bullshit their way out of it, we'd be no better than those that raped the girl. Every Naija & non Naija blogger can join in to blog a stament that heavily slams the school authority and Abia State governor. We call them by the first, middle and surname. We get the bigger media to pick up the story and slam the VC of the school and the state governor for refusing to take action. We use free press release services and we sites to give attention to this matter. If have to mass slam and petition GEJ's Facebook page on a daily basis until those boys are behind bars.

101. Nigerians are just uneducated. FIRST: without no victim there is no case SECOND:no eveidence without a complaint. PEOPLE GET RAPED EVERYDAY. HOW CAN THE POLICE INVESTIGATE SOMETHING WHEN THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO LEAD? D'you know how many rapes that happen in universities across the US and u never hear of them. many rape videos have circulated around university campuses in the US and they just go like that. THE KEY WORD HERE IS EVIDENCE. Any lawyer or human rights group knows there is no case. THE GIRL IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN GET JUSTICE. WHAT HAPPENED WAS HUMILIATING AND SAD BUT SHE HAS TO COME OUT. stop laying curses on nigeria or the nigerian police force. ONLY a TINY FRACTION OF RAPE CASES MAKE IT TO COURT ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!

ReplyDelete
102. I'm sorry, i might be a little behind, but plix where is the girl that got raped. if her face showed surely someone must know her. someone must be able to identify her and lead the authorities to her so she can issue a statement and help kick start a real investigation.

109. Good evening Linda,I guess I should have come to your site first for information. I reside in the UK and heard about the case yesterday morning from some friends and i am deeply shocked. The thing is most Nigerian men actually get sent to jail for rape here but of course they cant escape doing that here whereas rape is quite common in Nigeria we just never want to say it.
I mean no offence here especially as i have loads of friends from Abia State and these friends have been hiding their heads in shame BUT something needs to be done.
At the top of my head can you get to Mrs Abike Dabiri,Or Madam Ita Giwa, what of getting to the heads of the Anglican and Catholic churches.even the Imans need to be pushed to demand an investigation and find those boys..Get the churches involved.EVERYONE should get these boys out.It is going to create a divide that will be a big problem in the future and to those that might have an idea of who they are PLEASE give them up.
It could be our friend, sister or even daughter lets get her justice.

I do think some mischievous people are trying to get into our heads with this fiction.Finding these students/ghosts should be the easiest thing to do. its sad though that this had to happen to her but i believe it was really thoughtful of her not to have tried fighting them off, this guys would have killed her,4 crying out loud they were all hefty looking!!!!!. i pray that God will give her the courage to come out with the necessary info needed to nail these shameless animals!!!!

120. @ Anon 9:31pm 9/19: I agree with you about getting 4th year law students to identify the voices of the guy in the video.

Also I think we should focus on finding this girl. Her face is all over the internet as it was copied and pasted from the video. Find her and make her identify the culprits and better still let her get some form of treatment.

Goal as of now:

1. Find the girl - that's the main focus. She is already the sacrificial lamb

2. Unscramble the faces of the boys in the video if you do have it. I am sure there are tech geniuses that can do that

3. Stop asking for the video.

2) The school campus and surrounding areas must be bombarded on the airwaves and in flyers tomake them aware of this fund.

3)Force the Nigerian Police to protect the anonymity of the victiom and any person who comes fort with viable information.

4)We need to enlist the help of Nigerian celebrities, i hate to say to say this. But if they talk people listen. If we can get folks like Omotola,Mo Abudu,Genevieve Nnaji to advocate for this girl and this case, that would be great.

5) Use some of the funds collected to see this girlthrough the rest of her training either in school or vocational skills

6) Also cover her medical bills

Lastly, my fellow nigerians, please stop calling on God to punish that and punish this.God has enabled us with the mind and voice to speak out and act out evil. He's not going to come down fromheaven to manage this for us. We the people have to do this!

123. hi linda! this is rose, i rang u last nite from london regarding this rape issue.
1, i spoke with couple of high ranking govt official whom seemed hesitant to deal/be associated with the matter. this makes me very sad.

2, i will go ahead and do exactly what i said i would do over here.

I may need the tape AND the statements issued by the clearly incompetent Govt of Abia/ the University VP.
since our 'leaders'only act when NAMED AND SHAMED. Thats exactly what will happen. I will be in touch.

ReplyDelete
124. Should it even matter whether they are students in that university or not? Shouldn't they just join hands with everyone else to fish out the perpetrators? I don't understand the institution's swift denial.

126. Hello everyone
To those that doubt the 'veracity' of the video just google the damn topic and you will get it off Naija pals,o by the way it has been blurred probably by the same boys who filmed it and its also on youtube but it has been censored to stop further embarrassment of the young lady.
Shame to imagine some think this is a hoax.
I really hope i can wake up to hear some process has begun to fish them out

128. What goes around comes back around. Abia state goverment officials and ABSU officials that have the power to do something about this and are not doing anything will one day pay with the dignity of their female family members when they are violated. Useless people.Same old, old, story from nigeria. They prefer to save face than prosecute a crime what an outrage. It is because of this lawlessness that put me of visiting nigeria that often. Ok people commit crime in every country even in the UK where i live but it how you deal with the crimes that matters. Any way this matter must not end here because if it does it would give a very bad signal to would be rapist out there that they can commit such a crime and get away with.

129. Hey peeps. We don't need to look too far. The girl knows the boys. She should lead the investigation. She's the one calling out the names....

130. Apparently, gang rape is now a global phenomenon. Recently, a
14 year old Brazilian girl was taken to a prison and raped by inmates for four days before she escaped.

131. Madness.com!!!
we know they are students and the fact that it happened in Abia State means the gov needs to investigate regardless of what school, job place or anything!!!
We all know Theodore isnt qualified to be gov, ask him what schl he went to. The only reason that state is bothered by him is cause of Orji Kalu that brought the wahala into state house.

132. The guys that did this will leave the rest of their life in sorrow and hardship. peace and joy will elude them until they publicly confess and ask for mercy from the victim. they will not experience the joy of fatherhood cos they are not worthy of it. what is fun to them 2day will be their doom. i pray d lady recovers both spiritually and emotionally in Jesus Name.

133. ARRANT NONSENSE, EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT ABSU STUDENTS, IS RAPE IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD LEGAL, DID IT NOT HAPPEN WITHIN THEIR JURISDICTION, LINDA LETS WORK ON THIS OUR SELVES LIKE A READER SAID LETS HAVE THE NAMES AND START OUR OWN INVESTIGATIONS. WTF

ReplyDelete
134. Linda... good job on raising awareness on this issue and following up.

The denial and lack of severity associated with the denial is ludicrous, I have seen the press release by Abia State Govt - how silly, as if that detracts from the fact that it happened in Abia State even if it were not on campus, I am also convinced that those boys are from the Uni, I have sent the names identified to the Abia State Govt via their contact page and contacted them twice on this issue.

Everyone, pls find attached the link to their contact page and lend your voice to this issue, if they will not do it for justice sake, atleast they may do it because we will not let them rest!

http://www.abiastate.gov.ng/contact/

Such a young girl, so young, so cheated, so violated, so intruded like she was nothing but a thing to be used. May God heal her pains and cause her to soar above this incidence like an eagle.

If thi girl is one Ministers daughtet now you will see that in the next two days those rapists would be fished out, so I bet you nothing is going to come out of this case we are all selfish in Nigeria

Then again the victim is not helping matters cos I guess she knows those rapists so she needs to report the matter and the authorities will follow up

141. Sincerely i am beginning to hate this country more......how can Abia state govt and VC of ABSU conclude without making thorough investigations??even if the rape was not done in ABSU,,at least it was in Abia state and the good for nothing governor should do something at least he's accountable for the security and well being of everyone in Abia state,,,,,ohhh,,,i just wish it was his daughter that fell victim of that occurrence..........if the state govt is not doing anything what will the police do??like someone said earlier,,,all these criminals have people in high places and its so unfortunate that the victim has no one up there who can fight her cause.........it will be extremely difficult for the victim and anyone who knows these rapists to give any useful information about them for fear of loosing their lives,,,,Linda dont be suprised,,those animals might be reading all the comments on this blog and even visit other sites to monitor the trend of the whole thing..........i just hope and pray that these animals are found and pay severely for their criminal act......

I'm sure if you ask the Inspector general of police, he would say he hasn't been briefed of the incidence but the perpetrators would be brought to book and made to face the wrath of the law... Na today???

If you ask the president of the country He would say they are not Nigerians but people from neighbouring countries even though we can hear the boys speak native dialect (Igbo)... 9ja my 9ja...

145. REFUTAL
The Office of Her Excellency, Chief (Mrs) Mercy Odochi Orji is absolutely not oblivious of the current scandalous blogs making the rounds; alleging a rape case of a young woman and a student of Abia State University by FIVE male students.
The Office of Her Excellency, wishes to make it categorically clear that available report from the leadership of the University said that there was no such inglorious act and ugly incident in the institution.
His Excellency, Chief T. A. Orji, the Executive Governor of Abia State has investigated and refuted the allegation. However, we appeal that the victim should help by giving a lead to enable government bring perpetrators to book.
Her Excellency has been at the forefront of championing the course of womanhood and promoting the Girl Child Education, Kicking against Child trafficking and Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy and Child Labour, and would therefore stop at nothing to bring the perpetrators to face the long arm of the law if allegation if found to be true even if happened outside the institution.
The report as a matter of necessity, justice and fair play should be substantiated with facts in the interest of our society.

His son went into a supermarket, ordered everyone out bcos he wanted to shop and when a military guy in the shop refused to leave he asked his boys to beat him up which they did then the military guy called his fellow military men and they beat d governors son blue black. Then guess what followed; governor orji and his son arranged and kidnapped this man while he flew his culture son abroad for treatment....

Someone in the school who knows her would have reported anonymously but i dont think the girl is a student of the school. I suspect she is one of those undergrads who innocently or not visit university students. Sadly, this is where the story will end.

way forward - i learnt that the enough is enough (EIE)group are planing an awareness walk on this matter on the 5th of October in about 3 cities simultaneously Abuja and Lagos included.
i think its a good opportunity for us to come out en mass and hit the streets to register our protests and put pressure on the Govt to properly look into this matter and get the perpetrators off the street and into prison where they belong.

people spread the word and let others know so we can all chip in our support to get justice for this girl.

Compensatory reserve bundle for spending, unexpected expenses, and pecuniary range can be fun as famously as easy. "Found" bills gelt and change games are the answer.

Here are ten of my favorite money games. free games Conceding that most of us comprise saved our substitute in a container at some opportunity or another, these variations are more enjoyment, and because of that, from time to time more profitable. You undoubtedly will roll in up with some sharp variations of your own when you brood over just how clobber these bills games can be!

Dollar Bills Rank - Give rise to unimportant slips of manuscript labeled $1 or $2 or "Double", along with the name of the monied goals you are working on. As a replacement for benchmark, you might accept slips that conjecture something like: $2 Grand Canyon voyage, $1 Convection oven, $1 Luxurious restaurant dinner, $2 Pinch savings, etc. Delineate a slide on incontestable days of the week, and stow the amount in your filch savings container or budget account. If you extract "Double", draw another skid and tender twice the amount showing assisting that goal.

Coins Draw off - Devise slips of rag labeled with your goals as in the Dollar Bills Draw. As opposed to of dollar amounts, mark them with change amounts such as $.05, $.10, $.25, or $.50. Draw a oversight on some or every day of the week.
