what is so unbelievable about it, Linda? Aren't there Nigerians speaking fluent French, German, American accented and British accented English? Does anyone go around clapping and shouting for them? An oyibo learns your language, and suddenly, it is unbelievable?
Why is it a big deal that an American learnt how to speak Yoruba? Lots of foreigners speak Nigerian languages and we Nigerians do speak other countries languages. I am a Nigerian of Igbo extraction, i went to University in Mexico, have Diploma in spanish, learnt it within three months before proceeding for my major which is science. I read, write and speak spanish fluently. Yes we can congratulate him for learning the language or admire his determination but not worship or make it look like he did something impossible.
Wow! He teaches in my school! @ Rutgers U. I almost took him but they switched the prof when I took the Yoruba class. I wish I knew what they were talking about. I'm not yoruba :(

But, when you talk about dialect languages like Yoruba, where you can have the same spelling for same words but it's said differently because of the accent put on it. You can easily twist your tongue to say English words but as an English speaker to twist to Yoruba, it's harder. I am impressed. It's easier to learn other languages if you already speak a language. My latina friend lived in Nigeria for a year and speaks Yoruba fluently because she speaks spanish. That's why I don't get too surprise when some Lebanese speak fluent hausa.
Asian language is another difficult one because it's so many characters. So, when i hear my naija brodas and sistas who speak Japanese or chinese fluently, I am very impressed.

Americans are known for learning everybody else's language. After all its the land of immigrants. You cannot graduate from any decent university without being forced to learn a foreign language. That being said, kudos to the guy on his fluency. There are a lot of non-nigerian women married to nigerian men who learned their husbands languages because their mother in laws couldnt speak english.
Step 1: Know your enemy. Step 2: Think how he thinks. Step 3: Talk how he talks. Step 4: Know what he knows. Step 5: Observe his weaknesses. Step 6: Remove his inhibitions by befriending him. Step 7: Attack and Finish him i.e. Enslave or Exterminate.
I would like to see all your gushing and salivating mouths in a few years time when they start writing in their history books that the Oyo empire was a kingdom of white people who conquered the native savages who lived in trees while they built up places like Lagos (a foreign name, mind you)and subjugated the hinterlands. Then they give as examples the white woman who has comandeered the Oshogbo shrine and the likes of Kevin whatsisname and Cara Harshman aka Titilayo speaking Yoruba. I hope you will all still be gushing and salivating then.
I see where you are coming from but there's also nothing wrong with admiration. Nobody is salivating. You can admire while you keep your eyes open.
One of our biggest problem with Nigerians is we complain about everything and finally when we get some recognition we complain again. Even, if they mean bad, it can still turn to something good too. Let's also learn to appreciate....
