Federal court discharges Lucky Igbinedion of corruption charges

Former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion yesterday received a breather from his legal troubles as the Federal High Court sitting in Benin discharged him in the 66-count charge of money laundering and corruption brought against him and others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge ruled that it would amount to double jeopardy and abuse of court process to try the former governor again as he had in 2008 entered into a plea bargain with the EFCC. - 234next

Interesting!!!

  1. What is interesting is that EFCC tried to retry him after accepting a plea bargain previously. In western countries that we like comparing Nigeria with, you CANNOT try a person twice for the same crime except for a very good reason. EFCC messed this one up not the courts.

  2. Exactly.....The Law cannot try someone for the same crime twice...if he has "plea bargained"..then that settles it....this EFCC woman should face her work and get high class convictions instead of all these rigmarole she has been doing since she took the mantle of leadership of the anti graft body

  3. linda, theres noting interenting here...

plea bargain is an acceptable process in litigation. efcc can sometimes be funny, why plea bargain with the guy , got what u wann get from him and turn around to wanna prosecute him? if u know u had a solid case against him and wanna jail him you should have gone for his 'balls' in the 1st place.

if they can can take all those properties and other stuff from mrs ibru, now they can't turn around to want to prosecute her again. its double jeopady. iginedion case is no different
