Elephants Tusks coming to Lagos intercepted in Kenya

A shipment of elephant tusks were intercepted at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport in Nairobi May 6, 2011. The smuggled consignment of 115 pieces of raw ivory weighing about 1.4 tonnes were intercepted by Kenyan authorities on May 5, as they were en route to Lagos, Nigeria. Kenya remains opposed to the lifting of the international ivory trade ban. - Reuters

    maybe to put up in their shrines and do voodoo or something. so they are still senselessly killing elephants for their ivory tusks? SAD.

    do you even realise how much one of those tusks go for?
    ivory is a precious gem made from tusks aside from that people use tusks as status symbols in their homes as decoration just like you see animal skin et al

    1) voodoo. yes j at 10:46am. used symbolically in power juju. used in coronations etc
    2) status symbols in homes.
    3) made into jewelry

    The final destination of those tusk is probably not Nigeria.
    The price for one elephant tusk when finished is about $8000 USD. So 115 pieces X 8000 = $920,000.00 GBOSA!

    An elephants’ tusks are a blessing and curse. Blessing because they give a elephants a true majesty that rise them above other animals as well and being of use for various tasks. A curse because man’s avarice for ivory has led to the senseless slaughter of hundred of thousands of the magnificent animals.

    i seriously don't believe that Nigeria was its final destination though. its just easier to smuggle things through nigeria because of its poor security and you can easily bribe people to allow it. so, not surprised.
