Future Award & Golden Globe Winners

Update!

This is the dress I wore to the Grammy Future Awards, made by designer, Steve Ray.
Fine or fined?
Somebody said to me at the event 'If you wear this to an occasion like this, what are you going to wear on your wedding day?" With the tail and all...lol
You can check out more pix from the event here http://niyitabiti.blogspot.com/
Chimamanda Adichie is young person of the year
I was at the 2008 Future Awards...It held yesterday, Sunday 13th 2008 at the Muson Centre.
My first outing in months and it was worth it. Now, I understand why people dress up to go to events.

So, I got one of my designers to make me a dress...Steve Ray, and the dress he made..well, when you guys see the pictures from the event...you can laugh or love it.

Like I said, the event was worth my time and energy. It was a red carpet event and I enjoyed every moment of it. Finally met Toni Payne and Bobby Taylor...ain't that grand?

Saw people I haven't seen in ages and exchanged a few phone numbers.

The high point of the event for me was when Former minister of Education and Vice President of the World Bank, Mrs Obi Ezekwesili gave her opening speech. She said something I will never forget..."You choose a life of ease? How degrading!"

One day this phrase will mean something very special...I promise you that!

'Cos I got to go to work, I can't write all I wanna say so let me go straight to the list of winners

Actor of the Year
Ali Nuhu
(never heard of this guy...he must be good to have won)
He beat the other finalists, Genevieve Nnaji and Nonso Diobi.

Artist of the Year
Oghenekaro Okporiereie
He beat Seyi Taylor and Jide Alakija

Best Use of Technology
Dele Odufuye

The other finalists were Olufemi Akande and Blue Labs Technology

Best Use of Advocacy
Toyosi Akerele.
She beat UNITes and Emmanuel Etim

Musician of the Year
Dbanj
(Who else?)
He beat PSquare and Olu Maintain

Enterpreneur of the Year
Bukola Adubi.
Other two finalists were Funke Bucknor-Obruthe and Tosin Dekalu

Music Producer of the Year
ID Cabassa
He surprisingly beat Don Jazzy and MOSA

Screen producer of the Year
Mak Kusare. Don't know this guy. I expected Joke Jaiyesimi to win. That's one hard working young woman. She was behind Music Africa and presently the producer of Nigeria's hippest TV programme, HipTV and is working on other projects. Lamide Opere was also a finalist.

Enterpreneur of the Year (Beauty & Style)
This is the category I was nominated in. It was won by
Banke Meshida-Lawal.
Sincerely, I'd expected Toni Payne to win...oh well. Muyiwa Osindero was a finalist.

Journalist of the Year
Abdulkareem Baba Aminu
Azuh Amatus and Samson Adeoye were finalists

Magazine of the Year
Soundcity Blast.
I've never seen this magazine but I hear it's cool. The other contenders were Applause and Juice Magazine.

On-Air Personality of the Year
Gbemi Olater-Olagbegi of Cool Fm
Denrele Edun and Lamide Akintobi were finalists

Professional of the Year
Ike Ochonogor
Noble Igwe and Omowale David Ashiru were finalists.

I didn't wait long enough to find out who won Young Person of The Year
1, Mikel Obi
2, Chika Nwobi
3, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Anyway, congrats to the organisers of the Award but one question I really want to know is...'What's your criteria for choosing winners?"

As soon as I get pictures and from the event will let y'all see it.

One thing I learnt from yesterday is no matter how difficult it is, keep striving, never give up, dare to dream and believe you can fly. Despite your background or circumstances, you can overcome and become. It's really up to YOU!

And like Obi Ezekwesili said 'You choose the life of ease? How degrading!"
It's OK not to want to stress yourself and work your butt off to make a living, it's OK to rely on Daddy's money and never lift a finger, it's even OK to attach yourself to a rich man and live the easy life...but don't expect to be called on stage to give speeches, don't expect to be nominated for awards, don't expect to inspire the young generation, but mostly, don't expect people to mention your name as a role model or walk to you and say 'one day I want to be like you or surpass your achievements'. Just be content with who you are!

Ok enough of Future Awards, let's go international

Nice work Linda, for a nominee that could not make the award show, u really filled me in. I did not make the final list too. Lookind forward to seeing d award pics. Keep up d good work.

Who is Oghenekaro Okporiereie? what is he/she about?

Anonymous said...

Linda am i the first to comment or what? Anyways ... i hear you on Obiageli Ezekwesili's statement. One can't sit on the sidelines if they want to make a mark on their generation.

But then again everyone won't be "seen" collecting awards, giving speeches and none the wise. But they might be doing it in the background unfortunately having no one to recommend / nominate them for awards and giving of speeches.

An example would be my ma.

I think u and Toni were robbed. Haba, at least Toni should've won something, since she was nominated last year and twice dis year. Dat's a bit unfair sha. If it was a beauty pageant now, i would've said maybe d winners slept with d judges or something.

I think one of criteria of judgement should be based upon the impact that the nominee has had in the society with their skills/talent/development. I'm not being biased now but i think you've made such a big impact in d blogville especially on the readers. I'm sure there's no reader(including me) out there who'll tell me that they're not moved by some of your posts.
I've not even heard of some of these winners b4. Who is Ali Nuhu, come on now, i had to google his name now to see who he is and he's just a local hausa actor. *big hissss* Pls don't even let me keep on ranting now. I'm sooooo pissed.

I was at the future awards too, your interpretation of the speech is interesting. I am sure the people that won awards work very hard for other reasons than "fame and glory".

@anonymous at 5:10, I totally agree with you, there are so many people that have done so much for themselves and others and will never be recognised, yet, they wake up every day and do it.

Wienna. People shouldnt be confident in Ignorance. The fact that you dont watch Hausa movies doesnt make them any less relevant. Or Hausa actors are no longer actors because they are not based in Lagos?

In any case, Ali Nuhu acted in the AMBO blockbuster movie, Sitanda that won 7 awards at AMAA, and he won the AMAA Awards for Best Actor. Okay?

I have noticed that wienna is abit racist towards hausa people, u might wanna check that coz its gettin abit outta hand, wheneva some1 from the north is mentioned it either some bush hausa person or some ish like that. You not better than us in anyway, shall I say it again, U are not BETTER THAN US IN ANY WAY! Repeat it after me, were all nigeria and youd better recognize ur what wrong with our country and I hope to God you change.

Linda, sorry but I just had to say this.

I agree with anon @5.10. Not everyone is in the limelight of things that they do or give society. One's name might not be remembered by the world but by the few lives and hearts they touched and imparted so much on.

Life is what we make of it....

NA ONLY YUROBA PEOPLE DEY NAIJA?

we cant all be winners at the same time...so its ok.. every one knows dat the best do not always win....
having said dat, congrats to the the nominees and winners alike!

linda,i must sayu're one young lady with her hands full..and u do inspire me..

OMG!! Linda I've seen the dress you wore to the awards and nooooooo!!!!

I mean noooooo!!! all I can say hope you don't become those predictable fashion icon that will tend to disappoint and commit a fashion faux pas on future red carpet events in nigeria.

but next time no no.....this was a huge faux pas...

'What's your criteria for choosing winners?"

Wharahell? Questions is: who da hell is nominating these jerk offs anywayz? enuff of these trumped-up awards! the fact is, that there r far more people; naija's that is, doing greater things all over d world that are not being heard of. that ur name is being bandied around in the naija entertainment circles shouldn't make u an instant award recipient.
hands off these awards nitwits!!!

O.A.Eddy said...

I hear Obi Ezekwesili speak once. She is really inspiring

Along the lines of what Wienna said, I hope that the future awards is not going to become suspect because of who the awards are given too. Hmm, cos even I would have thought Toni Payne would win. oh well...

Anonymous said...

Banke Meshida is a lot more popular than Toni Payne since she is also a makeup artist and has been there for years and based in Nigeria. Not many in Nigeria know Banke like Toni also. She deserved it though the other nominees including you Linda are great!

Anonymous said...

Linda Linda Linda, I love u jare but dat dress na!! Iz a big no o! A very big oneI think you should have gone for something wham!! but fun- its the future awards hunny- not golden globes- but u still get an award for being fearless and doing you albeit disasatrous. However you hair was ON POINT and u rocked more coz u were busy taking notes observing so u could come give us d scoop. I know u DONT dissapoint mami! I knew I'd get d scoop right here. Naww? Banke deserved it more than Toni, who be Toni sef? Am not dissing but she needs to do more. I applaud all nominees keep inspiring d youth!

I have a feeling this post is going to have a lot of 'anonymouses'. Don't mind wienna my fellow notherners and the rest of Nigeria. She has a habit of picking anyone who is non-yoruba apart.

That said, I think the Future awards and it's organisers are a little bit on the handicapped side because you almost have to be extremely popular, be in a highly visible profession or run around in 'that' circle to get nominated. I dont think it is deliberate and obviously I do not blame the organisers because we all know that communicative infrastructure in Nigeria is extremely expensive and still poor at that. But when you view thee longlist, you have to ask, what about the exemplary youth in Akoko-Edo or in some hidden corner of Yola?

So whilst it appears that the awards are cliquish, you have to remember the challenges involved in creating truly inclusive and encompassive event. I think it'll get better...they have their work cut out.

Linda, your dress, I'm not sure what I think of it. It's lovely but at the same time 'uhm'.

"I'm not being biased now but i think you've made such a big impact in d blogville especially on the readers. I'm sure there's no reader(including me) out there who'll tell me that they're not moved by some of your posts"

That's why she should get an award? "impact on blogville"? people wey dey darfur never get award, na people for blogville suppose get?

Anonymous said...

@anonymous 5:10 for example, Chude that has made this all possible. Congrats to him, nobody needs to give him an award, we can all see his hard work and diligence.Let the rest people fight over awards and red carpets.

me i no feel ur dress at all. Were u wedding? All the same u are a great womaan, an embodiment of beauty and a source of inspiration to young girls like me.Continue to do wat u know ow to do best.U really appreciated.

Anonymous said...

Ish Linda, that was such a fashion faux pas I swear. Your dress was horrible and you look like you wore the national flag. No now You should be arrested by the fashion police.
Yes, I've noticed wienna's tribalistic tendencies-how very uncouth!

Anonymous said...

I am not really sure why everyone thinks Toni should have won, if its not becos of stalking all these blogs... i really wouldn't even know who Toni is. I love u Linda and i am sure Toni is also great, but i still believe Banke deserved that award hands down. I really didn't think there was any contest becos she is hugely popular in Nigeria and even abroad. Don't worry jare Linda, that award is urs next year... just continue doing what you are doing :-)

Anonymous said...

Wienna i can see that ignorance is bliss abi?. All because you have never heard of the Hausa actor before does not make him less important than the people you know. Gosh!! as Nigerians, sometimes i wonder if some of us even went to school at all, tolerance is the way to go miss thang!. I am VERY happy with the winners picked, u all could learn a thing or two from these Western actors/actresses, and just be happy to be recognized and nominated.

Anonymous said...

I like the dress - it was daring of you to wear it and I think you pulled it off.

Also, I agree with anon 5.1oam and anon 9.42am: fame and glory and being given awards etc should not be the motivating factor for working hard and being an achiever. There are many hard workers who have achieved a great deal and touched many lives but are not recognised or nominated for awards - this takes nothing away from them. God sees their work and they will get their blessings even if men don't appreciate them.

Also, I'd like to say that in light of all the competition for the awards, just being nominated for an award of this calibre is an honour. I think the nominees also have a lot to be proud of, even if they didn't win. Not everyone can win. For me, Banke Meshida has been consistent, committed, and excellent in her work for a long time and she deserves the award as much as anyone else. This takes nothing away from Toni Payne, of course - the simple truth is that not everyone can win!! This award is meant to be inspirational, uniting, and encouraging, it should not become an avenue for bitterness, unhealthy competition, or rancour... which brings me to my next point...

Wienna, I'm sorry to say this but you need to check your attitude - you sound hugely tribalistic. If people like you don't change, the inter-ethnic clashes in our country will continue. Also Wienna, try not to criticise people when you are not sufficiently aware of who they are or what they've accomplished. It is simply narrow-minded.

Peace out.

Sweetheart, you looked delicious as usual. I'm so proud of you.
I have never liked Wienna. She stalks erotic blogs and tries to get with the guys and when they turn her down she takes offence and looks for a new blog to stalk.
I was surprised to see her on such a responsible blog at first, as i didn't want her to marr your squeaky clean image. See? My suspicions were right.
Wienna get your racist abi tribalism arse off Linda's blog. If you cannot respect people for their achievements, then go and make your own achievements you cheap local champion trying to get popular off Linda's back.
I would have said more if it weren't for the respect i have for Linda............

Anonymous said...

lol....hehehehehe, i'm so popular now cos of my comments now. See everyone mentioning my username. hahaha...oh the wonders of blogville. I have to making comments like dis often. BTW, lovely dress Linda, keep on repping d green-white-green flag ojare. Go on sohun

Olu said...

Pls Linda, explain to everyone that the comments you attached are just ur personal opinion. We all want our people to win but if they dont, it doesnt make them anything less of a winner. Just getting nominated is an honor. There is no special politics in choosing the winners. Pls, Future Awards is a respected awards. Evry1 can like to calm down. Also, Wienna, i have to agree with evry1, u no try oo..

Anonymous said...

Just because Toni Payne has been making her way around blogville doesn't mean she deserves to win an award.

She really needs to get out there and let us see her work and products.

How are we meant to know is she's really a successful entrepreneur? Loads of people make claims and they are doing just that 'making claims'. Just check out half of the so called 'designers' in Nigeria.

It was fine for Banke Meshida to win. Maye Toni can try again next year.

Ok...i've calmed down now after some moments of continuous laughter. Come on now my people. All i can see is ranting and barking here. Naijas have suddenly become so over-sensitive to matters these days, not even naijas. Africa as a whole. A lot of us like misreading things and twisting them. I read my comment over and over again and i don't think i said anything racist or tribalistic. It's not like i said the dude can't read or can't speak good english, or he smells. I only made a harmless comment, only said my mind. And that's what these sort of sites are for. I say the truth and nothing but the truth. At least i sign in most of these blogs with my real username and not with some 'anon' crap. Give over people. There'r more important issues to moan over. Bunch of tossers!

ANYWAY, YOU'RE VERY PRETTY. NEXT TIME, LET DAVID DESIGN FOR YOU AND YOU'LL NEVER BE THE SAME LINDA AGAIN, LOL!

i think the dress looked nice on you, it was just not for the award. too much but u looked lovely.

Anonymous said...

wienna really, a smart person will know when it's time to shut up! For you, this is that time.

Anonymous said...

Wienna, I really feel sorry for you, as you're obviously not very smart. And I say this not only because of the inane 'real username' comment (come on, you don't even have a blog, you just go around saying dumb things on other people's blogs. Do you think this takes courage?) Anyway, I actually think you're not too smart because it's idiotic to laugh at your own stupidity and ignorance. People who are trying to correct your prejudiced attitudes, trust me you should be thanking them, not laughing. You are going to pass this ignorance and prejudice on to your children, and that is so sad for them and for our future, it's not funny at all. So I now see you're trying to blame Nigerians and Africans as a whole just because people called you out for being tribalistic - how immature. Face up to your problem - it is so glaring, so obvious that you have one, read your original comment again for goodness' sake, how many people do you need to tell you first? Anyway, if it makes you feel better about your prejudiced, ignorant little self, keep laughing. Keep passing the buck, and keep trying to put others down to make yourself feel better. The sad truth though, is that it's pathetic and makes you nothing but an object of pity. But keep at it by all means since you can't seem to get a simple message into your head.
