Senate panel wants fuel price increased to N150

The Senate Committee on works has proposed an increase in the pump price of petrol from N145 to N150. The committee made the recommendation in a report on the National Roads Fund NRF (Est. Etc) Bill (SB.218) bill that is currently before the house.

The NRF bill is designed to address the issue of poor funding of roads in the country.

According to the chairman of the committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya , the fund when established would "serve as a repository of revenues from road user related charges and other sources for financing, which shall be managed and administered for routine and periodic maintenance works on roads in the country". Part of recommendations the committee put forward is a fuel levy of N5 chargeable per litre on any volume of petrol and diesel products imported into the country and locally refined Petroleum products.

The committee also recommended toll fees; a percentage not exceeding 10 percent, of any revenue paid as user charge per vehicle on any Federal road designated as toll road. It further recommended international vehicle transit charges, inter-state mass transit user charge of 0.5 percent deductible from the fare paid by passengers to commercial mass transit operators and axle load control charges.

Out of the 15 members of the committee, the senators who endorsed the report are Senators Gaya, Clifford Ordia, Barnabas Gemade, Mao Ohuabunwa , Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Ben Bruce, Gilbert Nnaji, Abubakar Kyari, Ibrahim Danbaba, Mustapha Bukar, Sani Mustapha and Buruji Kashamu. Senators Olusola Adeyeye, Biodun Olujimi and Ahmad Ogembe who were members of the committee refused to endorse it. The report has been distributed to senators and would be up for deliberation soon.

  4. they keep making things harder for the common man. this is another increase in the price of fuel even after the dollar price has reduced a bit which should mean lesser price.

  26. Our Senate is full of foolish, stupid and brainless men and women who think only about their pockets. If you investigate properly I'm sure there's something they stand to benefit from this whole exercise and that's why they've endorsed it. My Fellow Nigerians you are on your own, your destiny is in your hands and no government will everlook at your face even if you're dying. The government is useless to us, we generate our own water through boreholes, we generate our own power through generator, Inverter, Solar etc, our roads are bad that we have to sand fill them ourselves. The uselessness of the Nigeria government to the citizenry is my book that is coming out soon. Please watch out for it. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  28. PRESIDENT JONATHAN was helping to pay Subsidy on Petroleum products and they all said it was a scam that there was nothing like fuel subsidy and it was a medium of stealing. Now they want to spend billions of Naira on School Stomach infrastructure and National Stomach Infrastructure that will never get into the hands of those that really nids them and for the school that might get to the students how long can they sustain it. If they will only pay the subsidy and revamp all the refineries in the country and go on proper price check/monitoring on goods/products in our markets they will not need to spend billions on stomach infrastructure. There will be massive price reduction and with the little we earn we can infrastructure our stomach ourselves. They attempt to stop what they call WASTE by putting the resources on a worst waste.
