The train is moving: Guinness Matchday ‘’Made of Black’’ tour makes a stop at Owerri

From L-R: Uche Onwudiwe, Marketing Manager Guinness, Moses Praiz, DSTV Sports analyst, Festus Akobundu, Consumer Connections Manager, Guinness Nigeria and Mike Maiyaki, Sport analysts at the Guinness Nigeria Made of Football event held in Owerri recently.

English Premier League lovers in Owerri were treated to an exciting “Matchday Made of Black” experience on Sunday 2nd April, as the Guinness Matchday train arrived for a screening of the Arsenal v Man City game.

Football fans experienced an incredible afternoon with screenings of two EPL games, complete with live commentary from the Supersports crew of Mozez Praiz, and Mike Maiyaki, as well as other popular football analysts such as Chief Willy Nwanyawu of Radio Nigeria and Azuka Emesoba, Team manager of Emenite Football club.  The afternoon was rounded off by a live music performance from award winning rap artiste Slow Dog who consistently shows he is Made Of Black by continuously advancing the frontiers of hip hop in Nigeria with his unique infusion of the Igbo language into his raps.

The Guinness Matchday experience kicked off in Lagos on 19th March, and Owerri was the second stop.  The Guinness Matchday activities are designed to celebrate Nigeria’s passion for football and music and to unite communities through incredible football experiences – in a way that only Guinness can do.

The Owerri events took place at Grand Cubanna and provided EPL fans the opportunity to showcase their passion for football. Fans were rewarded with free airtime for every Guinness Foreign Extra Stout bought at the venue while Infinix Mobility was also on ground to gift phones, earpieces and other accessories to winners at the events.
“We recognize the passion of our consumers to Football, and have a long term history of ensuring they have amazing football experiences”, Said Uche Onwudiwe, Marketing Manager for Guinness.
“Before now, we have been sponsoring the broadcast of the EPL in Nigeria and we remain committed to showing greater support for the incredible football fans across the country. The Matchday Made Of Black is another testament to our commitment in this regard.”
“There are two things you can be sure will always bring Nigerians together - Football and their favourite Guinness,” said Kunle Faloye, Senior Brand Manager, Guinness. “What better way to show this than an infusion of Guinness and Football.”
“As a brand,” he continued, “we celebrate those who are Made of Black- those who continually carve their own path without inhibitions. Football is one of the areas where our consumers lose all inhibitions and as a brand; we cannot but stay true to their passion. We’re looking for Fans Made of Black – fans who go above and beyond to demonstrate their passion for their favourite team. We want to find the fans who don’t just wear their team colours, they live them; the fans whose goal celebrations are more emotional than the players; the fans who never miss a match, not even on their wedding day! These are the fans Made of Black who we want to recognise and celebrate.”
Guinness has sustained a historic association to Football in Nigeria through its sponsorship of the EPL broadcast in Nigeria on SuperSports as well as its sponsorship of the various age National Teams and annual consumer promotions such as Every Minute Made of Black that reward fans who buy and enjoy Guinness while watching the game.

The Matchday Made of Black train will continue to visit other football loving cities in Nigeria making its next stop at Enugu on the 16th April before proceeding to Benin and Ibadan.

Please make sure you enjoy Guinness responsibly – strictly 18+
