100 level Unilag student commits suicide after hostel roommates disgraced her publicly for stealing

Ajani Damilola narrated what sadly happened via his Facebook account. According to him, Ariyibi Ayomide, a 100 level Student of Unilag, Faculty of Business Administration - department of Employee Relations and Human Resources Management (ER & HRM), committed suicide after being disgraced by her roommates for allegedly stealing in her hostel.
"An incident happened in her room (Amina Hostel) which involved the missing of belongings (which includes make up and clothes) of another girl in d same room.
On Thursday, some of the belongings of d fellow room mate was found in Ayomide's bag ( scattered in three different bags - make up in one of of her bag, clothes in another bag and clothes in another bag making 3 of Ayomide's bag).

"As a result the roommates disgraced Ayo and called her many names( relating to a thief) and disgraced her publicly. Ayomide called her mum and her mum came down next day( Friday) to settle d issue. The make up was valued at #2000 in which Her mum paid. After that, her mum told her to pack her bags and follow her home which she did but as she was going d room mates shouted on her and called her so many names.

"Her mum took her home and went back to work (her mum is a unilag staff). Ayomide was d only one left at home when she took sniper in the afternoon. Her mum came back in d evening and saw her child in a critical state. So she asked what happened to her; Ayomide just stretched her hand to do bottle of d sniper she took. Immediately her mum gave her palm oil( epo in yoruba) but results were not forthcoming. So she rushed her to a medical centre at ebute metta, still results were not favourable, she was then taken to Luth ( Medilag). Ayo gave up in LUTH around after 7 yesterday. REST IN PEACE AYOMIDE!!!!"

    1. I read people's comments and was like how??
Please there are terrestrial forces acting, they hv been acting and will continue to act.
This thing that happened is not ordinary.
If you are conversant with some yoruba movies you must hv watched something similar.
It's either Dis forces made her to steal not because she cannot afford the makeup of 2k but just to disgrace her n her family.
And after stealing she would be like, how come? How did she do it?
      It does happen to ppl.
They could also hv made her to take her life. Or reminding her d shame she would face if her friends sees her.
Let's keep praying for our children.
      Things are really happening.
May her soul rest in peace.
For those her roomies, after collecting d money from her mum, wats d need of mocking her again?

  20. Am not convinced that this girl took those items. How can you steal and keep it in a place that it will be found easily? Am suspecting foul play here. Someone must ve put those items in her bag, maybe because of one issue or other or jealousy to spite her. This is pure gangerism.

So I fault the mum,if she knew her daughter had klepto tendencies in her,y keep her in a hostel?esp a unilag girls hostel for that matter?parents shud be sensitive.
Suicidal tendencies occur overtime.it's depression at its peak.poor girl.

  24. Pilfers hardly feel ashamedly bcos they are small thieves and are usually caught. This girl from my perspective didn't steal anything. She was shocked maybe how someone else sneaked the stolen items in her bags. Honestly these ladies should be quizzed by some detectives and the truth will come out. Tomorrow someone will say I haven't killed anyone in my entire life. Silent killers are everywhere these days and are still doing their ugly jobs daily.

l doubt if Ayomide stole those things. I think she was innocent. If Ayomide stole those things, do you think she would hide them in her bags in thesame room? Thieves are smarter than that. l guess it was a sheer set-up. Rest-in-peace Ayomide.

  54. Is there any one without sin? Why were they not able to forgive her? Are they happy now that their actions resulted to her taking her life? Its so so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why would she steal those things and instead of taking them out, still left them in her bags? Why did she choose to put such little stuff into 3 different bags when she would have put them in one of the bags and sneak the bag out? If really she was a thief, will she be that bold to call her mother to come and see? Who searched the 3 bags? I guess her mother paying the 2k was a sign of- let's not make trouble, let me go home and talk it over with my daughter.
To me, her room mates have questions to answer. For how long have they been living together? Did they have any issues? So many questions for her roommates to answer.
But it's so sad. So so sad.

  56. Wow so because the lady in question killed herself out of shame, there are speculations about whether she stole or not. Everyone is rushing to her defense claiming that she was probably framed. LOL, if she didn't commit suicide, will everyone rush to this conclusion? The UI student who was disgraced last year for stealing a number of items and had her picture put up on all the blogs, where were you guys to defend her innocence? It is too bad that she commit suicide and may her soul rest in peace. However, let us not point fingers at the people who embarrassed her for stealing. Her death is on her not on them. I pray God comforts her family members but let's not act like it is the people who embarrassed her for her wrongdoing that are responsible for her death. She committed SUICIDE, this is on her guys. I mean, her mum even took her home to reduce her guilt and shame but she still felt it was the end of the world for her. Some of us Nigerians need to toughen up and no matter how we want to react, it is still the honest truth and fact. At the end of the day, only God knows if she stole those things or not but either ways, her committing suicide is not justified.

    1. My dear happy new month. It is not all the news one gets to hear or know about no matter how popular it may seem. It's not because she committed suicide though partly but sometimes people are evil that you'll be shocked as to how far they can go to hurt or humiliate others. A little forensic investigation may prove she was a victim of hatred.
"I mean, her mum even took her home to reduce her guilt and shame but she still felt it was the end of the world for her". This your conclusion is personal if I must say because what the story says is:"The make up was valued at #2000 in which Her mum paid. After that, her mum told her to pack her bags and follow her home which she did.." That was the right thing to do: take her out of the environment and see how you could talk to her.
No body is pointing fingers but in countries where the lives of citizens mean alot to the government, this story will not just end on this blog post.
If you ask me brother, her room mates must answer questions to Alagbo and if they are exonerated the family of Ayomide will bear their painful loss.

  57. I am very sure, if she's guilty she would never call her mum. She would have wanted it to end in the hostel, and the fact that she killed herself shows how pained and devastated she felt. May we never be framed. RIP

  58. It's sad that a young girl have to die, for a society that there is no law and order and we have all decided to turn against ourself instead of asking the laws that need be to be!
First teach your children to be contented with what ever you can provide for them only
Secondly let them know that not everybody will love them
The urgly incident could have been avoided perhaps there is law and order with a little love -someone to report to and investigate rather than roommates being the investigators and the judge.
However people should learn to go to there respective constituency and call the real thiefs their names rather than a poor girl which all could be due to rivalry in school and someone planted it in her bags. Let's put some providence in our children's heart. Amina hall occupants should be ashamed of what they did to that poor girl and humanity

  59. Life does not end in University, young girls need to hear this. I wish they had counsellors in schools for young girls.

Young girls also need to learn to not be so mean, for all we know she may have been set up by someone trying to get revenge.

Still, life does not end at University.
