Photo: Pres Buhari's Chief of Staff summons Arik MD after finding out Arik Airline passengers have been stranded for 48 hours

President Buhari's Chief of Staff. Abba Kyari this afternoon summoned the MD of Arik Airline in Lagos after finding out the airline's passengers traveling to New York have been stranded for about 48 hours.

Also summoned by the Chief of staff was the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika. The Chief of Staff ordered Arik to provide accommodation for the stranded passengers as well as compensate them.

Just this morning, a twitter user @FelaAyodele, shared photos of some Arik airline passengers luggage that have been abandoned at the JFK airport in New York for close to three weeks.

    1. If it's Kenya Airways, they will keep you in a 5star hotel feed you & return you to the airport with all apologies. I received that kind of treatment from Kenya Airways on 3 different occasions.

    2. I can categorically say that no airline will provide higher than 4 star hotel, get your facts right Mr Yomi. 4 star maybe but not 5. Nevertheless I agree that Arik should compensate better.

  12. Oh! So Buhari's government is yet to realise that Nigerians have been stranded for well over a year under its watch? You must have the moral authority before you can chastise others for their shortcomings. All I see here is "a pot calling the kettle certain names" . Put your house in order first you hypocrites.

  13. Arik Air is such a joke, they have zero customer services approach, imagine a flight was cancelled from NY to NAIJA and they were still selling tickets to customers without proper information, their attitude is so nonchalant and lackadaisical, honestly we need a better airline,it's a big disgrace on Naija as country,we don't have any national carrier,WOW! Yet funds are being embezzled in billions, what an irony.

  20. I Believe the nigerian Government should come to the rescue of nigeria airlines especially Arik that that is like our national carrier. Doing business in Nigeria is not always easy. People are just trying to bring the airline down which is not good. If Arik goes down today our unemployment figure will go up ND this will affect our economy negatively. Let us encourage our own Nigerians.

    1. You're kidding, right??! Go and ask their employees how many months salaries they are owed! They might as well not be employed! Please stop with acceptance of mediocre crap! I keep saying WE the people are the problem. When we are ready to say enough is enough, to really sacrifice to force real change, then things will happen.

  21. What is the business of a Chief of Staff on this matter? This is how not to run a government! The matter should simple be managed by the Aviation Minister. If it is the President that ordered this meeting then in his absence, the VP should address this not a Chief of Staf, he has no political will to order this meeting.

    1. Me sef I wonder o! And does the Chief of staff have the power to summon the Aviation Minister. Someone enlighten me. Perhaps I know not. It's usually when one doesn't have any work to do that they start meddling and crossing over into business that is out of their jurisdiction. Smh!

    2. The Chief of Staff does have the power to summon a minister and ask for an update so as to be in a position to brief the President. Look at the US for example. Sectretaries (Minister) of the government departments can't even see the President without clearing with the Chief of Staff.

  24. Air reschedules Lagos-New York flight by 24 hours.

On Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Arik Air sent out communication to passengers booked on its Friday, January 13, 2017 Lagos-New York flight that the flight had been rescheduled to operate on Saturday, January 14 at 4:00 pm. The rescheduling was necessitated by the uncertainty of getting aviation fuel to operate the flight because of the warning strike called by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) which was later called off on Thursday, January 12, 2017.

The airline made efforts to contact all passengers booked on the flight but a handful of them, especially those that bought their tickets through Travel Agents in USA and whose contacts are not on the PNR, still turned up at the airline’s check in counter at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos on Friday and in line with best practices, they were provided hotel accommodation.

To ensure that passengers were not further inconvinienced and allow the airline adequate time to make provision for fuel, the airline again sent out communication to all passengers at 6:30pm on Friday, January 14, 2017 to further move the flight to 2:30 am on Sunday, January 15, 2017. Again, a handful of passengers who were booked on the same service inadvertently turned up at the airport in the afternoon of Saturday, January 14 and misinformed the Chief of Staff to the President who was on his way out of the country that they have been stranded at the airport for 48 hours. Arik Air’s Managing Director and the Deputy Managing Director later met with the Chief of Staff to the President and the Minister of State for Aviation and informed them that the airline had already made arrangements to take care of the passengers.

  25. Why are Nigerians so untruthful. My brother was a passenger on that Arik flight and he got a message that the flight had been rescheduled for Saturday night. There is no truth in the complaint that passengers were stranded for 48 hrs. Let's not call dog a bad name in order to kill it.

  26. Na wa o, Nigeria will never seize to amaze me. How can a Chief of Staff who is supposed to have no constitutional duties summon federal ministers?
    odikwa serious.

  27. I work at the airport and I must say that there is falsehood in this story. Those who met with Kyari were not just Arik Air passengers. They were passengers who were being delayed by different airlines. We were all surprised when only Arik made the news.
Moreover those Arik Air passengers were only delayed for about 24hours or so unlike the 48 being claimed here.

  28. Arik is still our flag carrier employing thousands of Nigerians. We need to support the airline to grow. The foreign airlines have been there for many years and they all went through turbulent times at one point or the other. Pls let's not kill this employer of labour. Remember your brothers and sisters work there.
