NYSC alleged negligence: Sister of the corps member that died at Kano State camp, recounts the final moments

On Tuesday, it was alleged that a female corps member died after being forced to partake in military drills at Kano camp (Read here). It's now been revealed that she didn't partake in the drill. She woke up feeling extremely ill and was taken to a clinic where she was allegedly neglected and not given proper medical care. Identified as Oladepo Ifedolapo, she was a first class graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. She died same day she fell ill and was buried yesterday in Osogbo at her family’s residence amidst tears...
Her elder sister  has now recounted the late corps member's final moments. According to Oyeyode Abimbola,
"You (Ifedolapo) called me five hour to your death and told me to start coming as the NYSC doctors are not doing any thing for you they thought you were pretending you did not want to go for parade so they did not attend to you. When you started calling people from home, they eventually gave u an injection. Immediately after , You called me again, saying that you noticed a lot of rashes on your body, that I should speak with the doctor who however refused to talk to me.
I called five minutes later and you told me your tongue is twisting. They sent all your friends out after seeng all the reaction on your body due to the unknown injection, You said we should ask for flight and i called immediately. They told me Abuja flight is Mon, Wed &Fri. I told you to tell anybody in the clinic that I'm a nurse, That tey should allow me to speak to them. A male nurse took phone and told me you are having anaphylactic reaction and they will watch you for just one hour before transferring you to Aminu Kano teaching hospital. But alas, they did not,  until 5 hours later when they noticed you are restless and calling people at home.

I boarded a bus going to kano with your sister Kemisola Oladepo, to come pick you from there. I begged them to take you to a teaching hospital around but they took you to General hospital gwazo where they have nothing or little care to render. They took your phone from you claiming you are not resting. From that 5 pm I could not talk to you. I took a 16 hours journey to make sure I get to you, but I was called around 3 am that you gave up, without any doctor in the hospital to assist you. The only nurse on duty told me she tried her best, her best of staying beside you when death was taking you away because there was nothing to use.

From that time till I got to Kano, I was hoping it will only be a mix up somewhere. that it can't be you. I got to Kano and met you at Aminu Kano mortuary. Alas it was you being put in that cold place. Amokkkkkeeeeeeeeee Mi, you couldn't withstand the agony. NYSC successfully cut your destiny due to negligence. REST ON OUR QUEEN. If you are opportuned to come back to the world pls come as my daughter. ADIEU Oladepo Ifedolapo AMOkE MI

  8. Very sorry for the lost. But what exactly is the name of the sickness that killed her less than 24hrs. I also experienced similar thin when i was serving, if you report to the clinic you arent feeling well they will assume you are pretending.

  11. Nigeria is such a despicable country. Too many stupid unreasonable Pple clustered together. She probably died of reactions due to the injections given to her. An autopsy shud av been carried out to confirm dis and the person responsible shud av been sued for manslaughter. But again, dis is Nigeria. Wetin dem sabi

  36. Same language "pretence" I remember 2013 during my service year in kebbi state I was having pains on my eye & was given a wrong eye drop that got my eyes damaged, I lost my sight, much pains & headache, running from one hospital to another to no avail, imagine having my eye balls SCRAPPED in one of the hospitals yet got worsten, then another said walahi corper your eyes have been damaged, the scars cannot heal again, so many corpers have lost their sight due to wind storm, soldiers were all pitying and contributing to help out, my friend took me to zonal inspector to allow me return to my parent he refused saying am pretending when we ladies start missing our boyfriend we always come up with stories, to no avail in tears on our way to lodge I ran into a lecturer colleague, may his soul rest in peace who wiped my tears and referred me to a man, a skilled specialist, who later today I took like a father, an hausa doctor, he promised me to have a sight again and God used him after 5 days I noticed huge changes and today I can see with my 2 eyes. Linda please I want this post published please. Nigerians have suffered so much, nysc should be SCRAPPED. Thank you

  39. This is sad! Extremely sad. No parent should go through this type of agony especially when one knows that the situation could have been avoided. NYSC should be sued. Those soldiers (well lots of them) are just heartless. They forget that we're not trained military people. It's just condition that has made people perform the 1 year ritual. They don't ever believe it when one says he/she is sick until the situation gets bad. Happened severally in my day. They even result to flogging such people and start shouting "obey before complain". It's just terrible. The people involved should be brought to book, even though it won't bring the girl back but it will serve as a deterrent to others. May her soul rest in peace. #JustSad

How will you force someone who is sick to work, they said they thought she was faking it WTF!!! Whoever forced her to work is wicked and I pity that person,.How will you force her when you are not paying here. The most painful part is this is an important case and people ignoring this. 56. I am presently serving(2016 Batch A) in kano and I can testify to the incompetency of the medical personnel in kano camp. I was purging wen I got to d camp and wen I went to d clinic they gave me flagyl and another drug but after using them they made my condition worse and wen I went back they collected the drugs they gave me and asked me to go back. Later in d day my condition got worse because I started stooling only blood but still they couldn't do anything for me in d clinic and I had to call my doctor at home and he told me to tell them to transfer me outside the clinic but the doctor said they can't. So I went back to d hostel and told my frnd to pray for me cos I was so weak I thought I'll die and I didn't want to worry my parents so I didn't tell them. But for Gods mercies and grace I survived that. I went back to d clinic to tell them I'm asthmatic and that d drug I'm using to suppress it instead of using inhaler is almost finished that they should give me more they said no they won't because I might be faking it and wen I showed them my inhaler they said it doesn't not mean anything, they told me to go and come back wen my condition is critical but my God did not let me die in that camp.
What I think the nysc officials need to do is to get doctors that have experience to be working in the clinic instead of using only the corp members that are doctors, nurses and pharmacist, the clinic need people with more experience. May Almighty Allah grants her Aljanah Firdous and eternal rest and forgives her all her sins and also gives the family the fortitude to bear her irreparable loss.

  59. I really don't understand the essence of NYSC, it's just a total waste of 1 year. force people away from their comfort zone to far away places, give them peanut salary every month which in some states doesn't even come regularly, risk their lives travelling to and fro, make them scape goats during election times. it's just a stupid idea.

May her soul rest in perfect peace, and may God give her family and friends the much needed peace, comfort and strength to bear their loss.

  68. I keep saying it. NYSC is absolute nonsense. The government cannot afford to treat it's youths with a semblance of humanity under the guise of drills. It's one year of torture. During my time, I hated every second, every minute, didn't mix up with the host, didn't want to, wasn't in the right mind set, didn't have any level of comfort or safety. It was hell. Scrap this madness already. You can give the staff other objectives, just leave us out of this delibrate or ignorant wickedness. Companies should stop making nysc a requirement. If some for some reason wish to travel around the country to learn other cultures, let it be voluntary.

Rest on beautiful soul. May your loved ones be comforted by God.
