Edo State Govt suspends traditional ruler of Uromi for one year, to donate his remuneration to orphanges

The Edo State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Uromi (Ojuromi of Uromi) Zaiki Edenojie II, for one year over failure to apologise to the married woman he assaulted on Sept. 28.

A statement dated November 4th and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, said the monarch was suspended for failing to apologise within a stipulated period to Mrs Betty Okoebor, whom he was alleged to have assaulted, taking over the cattle market and stalls built by the operators of the cattle market, banning eight butchers from doing business in Uromi market, among other infractions.
His remuneration from the 5 per cent monthly FAC allocation to the LG shall also be appropriated and donated to orphanages during the period of suspension. The state government had initially suspended the traditional ruler for for 7 days. Days later, he reconciled with the woman and her her family members. The statement reads:

"It is instructive to note that in your “Letter of Apology” of 28th October, 2016, you trivialised the gravity of your misconduct by describing what took place in public glare on the 28th of September, where you were the assailant as an ‘altercation’ and ‘family affair’.

"The governor observed in your letter of apology that your activities since you were initially suspended from office as Ojuromi of Uromi have raised issues that require further determination.

"To ridicule the Edo State government and deride the directive that you apologise to Ms. Okoebor, you proceeded to organise a ‘forgiveness Session’ in your palace in your capacity as Ojuromi, wearing a crown even when you were still suspended from office, purporting to be ‘forgiving’ Ms. Okoebor."

The statement added that government also received official security reports as to "high handedness in addressing relations with operators of the cattle market in Uromi to wit: unilaterally dissolve their association, appoint your preferred person to head the association and banishing their elected leader from Uromi.

"Others infraction are illegally taking over of the cattle market and stalls that they built themselves, banning about eight butchers from doing business in the Uromi market and assigning the responsibility for collecting revenue for the local government council to your own preferred person even without authority from the Council among other infractions. These are not the actions of a law abiding traditional ruler who believes in promoting peace, unity and development.

"In view of the facts established above, taking cognizance of your letter of apology that falls short of the public apology expected from you within the stipulated time, and the earlier suspension letter which had specified dethronement after seven days, the government of Edo State hereby commutes your dethronement to a one-year suspension from office as Ojuromi of Uromi in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law (1979) with effect from November 7, 2016

"During this period of suspension under extant laws, you are hereby stripped of all the privileges and rights of the Ojuromi of Uromi and barred from performing any duty whatsoever in that regard. By virtue of this suspension from office, your remuneration from the five percent monthly FAC allocation to the Local Government shall be appropriated and donated during this period."

    1. Chibuike are you from Uromi? Do you know what transpired? Kings are born in Edo land unlike some places where they are selected/appointed. Can Oshomole suspend Otairu of Auchi? Know that government come and go but Obas/kings remain. His cup is full and overflowing. Esan land will ensure Oshomole reaps what he sown either now or future.

    1. @Sisi i tire for Oshiomole oh. He is just looking down on Esan land. Can he try this nonsense with the Otaru of Auchi where he came from? He is going too far. You can caution and and send a strong warning him to desist from harrass cattle owners in Uromi market but you cannot humiliate a king like this for Christ sake. This man is going to be the king of Uromi land till he dies but Ishiomole will only be a governor for eight years. Oshiomole went too far on this matter. Abi, does he have a personal grudge against the king? Is there something they are not telling us? Abi both of them don fight over girlfriend matter before? Na wah oh.

    3. @Captain Enoch even if the kings he mentioned behave well, it still doesnt justify the fact that Oshiomole violated the customs and traditions of Esan land by asking a crowed king to be ripped off his crown when the crown was not given to him by the state government. This is a crown he inherited from his ancestors. Oshiomole should study the customs and traditions of Esan land before acting like a fool please! Customary court of Appeal should step into this matter to educate Oshiomole on customs and traditions of Esan land. What rubbish!

    4. @Captain Enoch Oluwaseun shut up there! When Emir of Kano and Katsina violated a 12 year old christian girl and forced her into marraige without her parents' conscent, what did APC government do about it? Did they suspend him? Did they charge him to court? Reno Omokri even wrote about it on this blog that the govt should intervene but nothing happened. If you are ignorant about customs and traditions of certain kingdoms, keep quiet instead of commenting ignorantly. Stmcheew

  14. Although it's good to punish him but i think Oshiomole went too far. You can suspend his salary and allowance but you cannot stip him off his crown as a king. His crown is sacred and royal and has nothing to do with the government because the government did not crown him king. The crown is hereditary and should be respected. It is a crown passed on by his forefathers and ancestors to him. It is him that the gods have chosen irrespective of whether he is irresponsible or not. The government can only punish him by cutting his salary or charge him to court for assult. As for the crown, they have no right to strip him off. I think Tony Anenih needs to educate Oshiomole on the customs and traditions of Uromi land

  15. But Oshiomole also assulted a woman and demolised her shop when he resumed office few years back. Did anybody strip him off his rights as governor for doing that? Although the Uromi king is power drunk and irresponsible, but Oshiomole has no right to strip him off his crown as king because he did not appoint him. The gods of the land and the people of the land appointed him. Whether his is a nuisance or not, the fact remains that he is a prince born to that clan and there is nothing anybody can do about it. His position as king is not political but ancenstral...just saying

  16. Edo state government should not confuse government laws with native laws and traditions. According to customs and traditions, it is forbidden for a king to beg or apologise. He can send gifts to the person he offended through his aides by way of apology but he cannot open his mouth to say sorry whether he is wrong or not. That is the tradition. Oshiomole should thread softly

Before nkor? He for no wear him crown? Is it Edo State government that gave him the crown? His ancestors passed on the crown to him not Oshiomole. I dont support the rude and unruly behaviour of the King but telling him not to wear his crown because you suspended his salary is absurd. The gods of the land are not happy with what the king did but dont allow the gods of the land curse you too Mr Oshiomole for violating the laws of Esan kingdom. How can you tell a palace king not to wear his crown because of the peanuts that the government gives to him? Arrant nonsense!

  22. Many of you here are so myopic, easy to deceive that you always run into hasty conclusion whenever u see a write up. Oshiomhole is carrying out a personal vandetta against the onogie. Trust Uromi people to always defile the Governor. And by the way, whoever knows oshhiomhole should tell him to reduce our school fees in AAU. Otherwise,....

  23. I reside in uromi,i knw wat transpired, oshomiole is carrying a personal grudge against the onojie for political reasons...but God will surely fight for the pple of uromi.omaru or wat eva dey call dat man and his sister will neva die a good death

  24. Just because the Oba of Benin supported APC during elections but the king of Uromi kingdom refused to support Oshiomole and APC because Edo state government increased the school fees of Ambrose Alli University in Esan land, that is why Oshiomole is fighting the king of Uromi kingdom. Embarrassing the king and humiliating him is political. He has made up with the family of the woman. So what else does Oshiomole want? For this, Oshiomole will never win votes in Esan land. If he likes, let him not develop Esan land. All his projects are always selfishly channeled towards Auchi because Tony Anenih is from Esan land. We dont care! The Short man devil called Oshiomole must pay for this

  25. Where are all our PDP war lords? Please you guys should step into this matter because this issue is pure political. Where is Reno, Tom Ikhimi, Tony Anenih & Pastor Ize-Iyamu? Emir of Katsina forced a little girl into child marraige and he wasnt suspended. Why is Oshiomole trying to humiliate our great king of Esan land just because he refused to support APC?

  29. Sometimes when i finish reading comments here i feel so downcast, because we find it difficult to call a spade a spade. We all know what has and is still happening in the North, how the so called royal fathers have been aiding and abetting evil doings over there but, has any of them ever been suspended? again, i wonder how people with beautiful degrees and exposure like Julius Ihonvbere can be used to do this kind of task. Are Nigerians so clueless that they can perform even stupid jobs? I am a very proud Exposed and Educated Ishan Woman, i know the custom and tradition of my people and i feel so sorry for that woman (Betty) that is aiding Oshomole and his evil cohorts to ridicule the custom and tradition of our land. The king of Uromi was never crowned by Oshomole he met him as a king and a king he shall remain until the day he joins his ancestors that is the tradition of our land. Long Live Esanland.
