Photos: Ijaw youths protest alleged victimization of Goodluck Jonathan’s family

Ijaw youths in Bayelsa state today staged a protest over the alleged victimization of former President Goodluck Jonathan's family. The youths who were in their hundreds, blocked the Sani Abacha expressway, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, challenging the constant harassment of the former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The protesting youths was led by the President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Worldwide, Udengs Eradiri.  Speaking, Eradiri said:
“This country has produced many presidents but the only one from the Niger Delta is constantly harassed by the mercenaries of state especially the EFCC. We want to call on the President to please respect former President Jonathan, at least for the fact that he brought peace to this country, handed over peacefully to him. He didn’t go to court. He allowed him to run this country, President Buhari should please focus on leadership and stop vilifying the first family. We appeal to Buhari to respect Jonathan the way he respects other past presidents. They have frozen his account; they are not paying his allowances. Even the security agencies around him do not get what is due them. Why is the Presidency victimizing Goodluck Jonathan? Patience Jonathan is is not the first First Lady in this country. A wife to former deputy governor, governor, Vice-President and President, are you expecting her to be a poor woman? There are other First Ladies in this country. In recent time, a former First Lady was awarded a university license. So, we are using this medium to send a message, leave our first family alone. Some people are not happy about Jonathan’s rising profile and they want to destroy it”.

  20. When will these people learn ? The people you are protesting for stole your future, did not develop your locality, instead they enriched themselves with the money that should have been used to make your life better still you are protecting them . No road, no hospitals, no schools no electricity . These people are cursed and they will suffer for generations to come.

  25. At first i was in support of probing whoever is a suspect in corrupt practices

But just like d rightly said, mama peace has been a wife to GEJ when he was a deputy Governor, a governor, a vice president, a president. If she has dat amount of moni in her account it isnt a crime

And wait, did they just say GEJ's allowances are being suspended and accounts blocked????

Buari ia outta his way then
Its obvious his doing everything to belittle Gej.

I pray d country will be ungovernable for him and eventually kicked out of dat seat

  29. Its obvious Nigeria cannot see the clear picture that the country is not working as one nation. If efcc arrest northern past president, they will also make the president seat hot for him. So he decided to deal and flex muscle and power with efulefu like Jonathan family . that is only where he can fight corruption . pls Nigeria should break up and separate for peace to reign.

  31. GEJ was in Aso Rock for years, yet we can't boast of an airport, seaport, industry,no road to his community, could not finish d east west road, gave his kinsmen divide n share contracts etc. Let us see what protesting will do. *rubbish*

  32. Those who criticised the youths for protesting the I'll treatment the buhari APC government is given GEJ may not in their life time on earth reach where GEJ reached. My little questions are 1, was GEJ the only President who have ruled us?2, Was he the only corrupt President ever ruled and still alive up to today?3, where are the others? Why must he be the first? Is because he is not from the northern side and not those military generals not even the cabals. Buhari should leave GEJ alone for the interest of peace and tranquility. We all belong to Nigeria and nobody should the power all alone. Fighting corruption is good but it not just start from GEJ administration only. It should start from the beginning because they are all life today.

    1. @Anonymous 11:36PM So because other people have also looted in the past, you are now justifying Patience Jonathan's looting? What if all the armed robbers in jail also protest to be released because politicians stole more money than they stole and the politicians are walking freely? The fact that others have looted in the past, does it make it right for Patience to also loot? It is people like you that is making Nigeria not to move forward. Listen to yourself speak, dont you think you sound stupid? I hate it when they catch a thief and the thief will say; no be only me thief. Mr A and Mr B also thief too. This is exactly what you are doing. Why dont you clear your own name first before pointing accusing fingers at others? Dumbest comment i have ever seen. I weep for Nigeria! Stmcheew
