Muslim groups call for Federal and State governments to make the first day of the Islamic calendar a public holiday

The Muslim Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates Association (UNIFEMGA) and Muslim Community of Oyo state (MUSCOYS) National Council of Muslim Youths Organisations (NACOMYO), Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) have all called on federal and state governments to declare Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic Hijrah Calendar 1438 A.H, a public holiday.
In separate statements issued to mark the Islamic new year, the groups said such a move is only fair and will give Muslims in the country a sense of belonging.

They said it was long overdue and called on the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to enter into dialogue with the Nigerian Government on the issue.

    2. Please there are already too many public holidays in Nigeria. Nigeria is concentrating on making money and these ones are talking about public holiday. If we keep having public holidays in Nigeria, where is the time to make money and fix the bad economy of Nigeria? Soon native doctors and babalawos will also ask for public holiday. Stmcheew

    1. No mind them. All the public holidays they have is not enough. Plus Govt sponsoring their Mecca Trip to Saudi and the affordable exchange rate for mecca reip, is not enough to give them a sense of belonging. Abi? May God intervene for us in Jesus' name, amen.

  10. You might as well call for Nigerian calendar year to be changed from the Roman calendar year, to islamic calendar year. The moslems already have more holidays in any year, in Nigeria more than the Christians. The Christians holidays are only the Easter and Christmas holidays. Whereas, moslems gets a holiday in February (they said it's Mohammed's birthday), then the eid-el fitri and eidel maulud holidays. Well, the country is already in a recession, you have an islamic government in place, working very hard to declare the country an islamic country. Please don't ask for one more holiday, ask that any kind of work should be barred in Nigeria, and that everyone should be worshipping Mohammed January to December. And to think that this statement was made by youths, you begin to wonder how lazy they must be, as well as being core islamic fundamentalists
