EFCC North Zone recovered N199.5m in 10 months

The North East Zonal Head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Maiduguri, Borno State, Ibrahim Bappa on Thursday, October 20, disclosed that a sum of N196, 670.000.00 (One Hundred and Ninety-Six Million, Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira) had been recovered by the anti-graft agency in the zone.

He added that another sum of N2.8million had also been recovered from individuals as a result of petitions received and acted on. Bappa made this disclosure at the zone's media briefing in Maiduguri. According to him, the Maiduguri zonal office which was commissioned on the 22nd March, 2010 was closed as a result of insurgency in the North East which ravaged and stalled all activities in that part of the country.

"The resumption of its operations in the area came as a priority under the leadership of the current acting Chairman, Ibrahim Mustapha Magu, who is poised to drive the vision, mission, and objectives of EFCC to greater height. Since its resumption of activities, the EFCC, has recorded remarkable achievement in the area of monetary recoveries," said Bappa.

The Zonal Head warned members of the public to shun all acts of corruption or be prepared to face the wrath of the law as the Commission will spare nobody.
Bappa further affirmed the resolve of the Commission to check corruption in the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camps in the North East.

"We will ensure that there is transparency, accountability and judicious use of the money allocated to the IDP camps in Maiduguri and elsewhere. We have started gathering intelligence after which culprits behind the sufferings in the people will be invited", he disclosed.

  12. According to the EFCC, Billions of naira and millions of dollars, pounds and Euros have been recovered from southern politicians whereas the total recovered funds from the north is less than 200million naira?? I cant relate to this Up till this moment, the region lacks government accountability, Northern leaders have done nothing to the region, they have no good roads, no health facilities, no youth support/empowerment programs just to mention a few. they have brought poverty and underdevelopment to the region, Education is highly discouraged which have given room for radicalism and Islamic extremism. The northern children who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow and equppied with quality and sound education are subjected to compulsory Islamic education (Almajiri) while the children of the northern ruling class attend the best universities and colleges in US, UK and other part of the world. The region ruled nigeria for more than 35years and still counting and have played important roles in southern leadership, the richest man on the continent is also from the region yet it remains highly under-developed with a UN alarming rate of poverty. The level of corruption in the north is unarguable the highest in the country. the region have been looted cancer dry without any accountability cos they have discouraged education by not building schools and education brings about enlightment. they even looted donated funds and relief materials for the IDPs. The EFCC in it game of selective corruption war has abandoned it core mandate and has become a tool to witch-hunt political rivalries and southern leaders. Fighting corruption is a welcome idea but when only politicians from one part of the country are being prosecuted then its not a sincere war. If PMB corruption fight is not a political/regional war, then all of them should be probed.
