Plagiarism: Presidency to punish official who inserted Obama's quote in President Buhari's speech

The Presidency has responded to reports that President Buhari plagiarized president Barack Obama's speech at the launch of "Change Begins With Me" reorientation campaign in Abuja last week

A part of President Buhari's speech (right) contained largely the same arrangement of words and emotional outburst that President Obama used in his 2008 victory speech (left) after he was elected the first American black president. Reacting to the report, Senior Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Shehu Garba, says the official responsible for the speech will be sanctioned

Below is the statement issued by Shehu Garba Shehu, SSAP Media and Publicity to the President:

The Presidency wishes to respond to a story on alleged plagiarism in a Presidential Speech that has been trending for most of today.
The Presidency observed that the similarities between a paragraph in President Obama’s 2008 Victory Speech and what the President read in paragraph nine of the sixteen-paragraph while inaugurating the “Change begins with me” are too close to be passed as coincidence. There was a mistake by an overzealous administration staff and we regret that this has happened.
A Deputy Director in the Presidency has accepted responsibility for the insertion of the contentious paragraphs even when a query to him was being typed.
This serious oversight will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate punishment meted.
The Presidency, once again regrets this unfortunate incident. Measures have been put in place to ensure that this does not happen again.
President Muhammadu Buhari admonished Nigerians to move past incident and focus on the message of change which the country needs in order to restore our cherished value systems.

  1. Biko what's wrong in using Obama's speech ? We all share valuable text books to graduate from one class to a higher class, what the message is the key not the author . This idiocy and pettiness lacks class!👎🏼

Most of them conveniently push aside the 1st coup by Igbo officers who killed all the leaders of the other tribes except theirs and this was the Genesis of their problems with the north. It was also an igbo (Aguyi Ironsi) dictator who abolished the regionalgovernment and concentrated power in the centre for the selfish benefit of the military and that has persisted till today.

And before anyone starts knocking head on the wall over my comment I am from the SS. I voted for GEJ in 2011 and voted against him in 2015. No sentiments if my brother is mismanaging my business I kick him out and employ someone else haba.

  76. The cost of occupation of our land and space—Biafraland—by Nigeria, is very high: we are the ones who bear the entire burden. The price that we pay daily for the destructive ongoing occupation of our land, Biafra, by Nigeria, takes many forms. Keep in mind that contrary to common sense, the cost-burden is not limited to those of us living, suffering and dying now, but is extended to our children and their generations unborn. And that’s not just in Biafraland, but anywhere else in the world, other places where our people are known to thrive.

As Nigeria battle recession today, we the people of Biafra want to make our public declaration and support for the formation of our Government by consent, That is Government of the people of Biafra.

Please make this a slogan and ideology, I support the government of Biafra, The provincial government of Biafra, a Government by consent.
I support the Government of the people of Biafra. Nigeria do not have any jurisdiction over me or my children. we do not consent to Nigeria or her authority.

A major and obvious area where we pay dearly as a result of finding ourselves forced into Nigeria, is Security—or lack thereof. Starting right from our houses and homes, there is no security at all. We live in anxiety in our own houses, wondering not if, but when, terrorist attack and armed robbers will attack and pillage. Windows are double-barred and doors triple-locked—G-d forbid there be a fire, wherein entire families would perish for not having easy escape routes from their burning house. Proceeding from there, moving around is also risky and extremely dangerous. The Nigeria Police which has an open license to loot and kill Biafrans in Biafraland are ever willing, happy and eager to dispossess our people as a policy and kill them for good measure: no one can challenge them, no one can stop them. If you walk, you are not safe. If you drive, you are not any safer: if Fulani or islamic state terrorist don’t attack you an armed car-jackers don’t get you, the poor condition of the roads will destroy your vehicle and more importantly, cost you life and or limb in unnecessary vehicular accidents. Travelling to and around Biafraland has become a high risk and prolonged ordeal which discourages movement of any type—be it for personal, business, or social reasons, or just for pleasure.

As Nigeria battle recession today, we the people of Biafra want to make our public declaration and support for the formation of our Government by consent, That is Government of the people of Biafra.

Please make this a slogan and ideology, I support the government of Biafra, The provincial government of Biafra, a Government by consent.

  78. As you all know, anyone traveling back into Biafraland from abroad is subjected to unbelievably “sharp” practices and criminal harassment. It matters not whether the traveler resides abroad and is just temporary visiting home, or lives at home and just returned from a temporary visit abroad. Starting from the airline trip itself where our people are exposed to insulting treatment (and even chemical fumigating agents which could be dangerous when inhaled, for example, by triggering an asthma attack), to arriving anywhere else in Nigeria, but not in Biafraland (because the International Airports are deliberately sited outside of Biafraland), the ordeal is almost unbearable. Traveling from any part of Nigeria into Biafraland to complete this trip exposes our people to armed robbery, swindling, loss of personal effects and possessions, serious accidents, unduly long delays and constant, repeated nasty encounters with the Nigeria Police checkpoints, there to be extorted, threatened, and even killed. Then, the weary traveler, having finally straggled home, has to sneak in quietly and lie low for a few days, because, when the “terrorist” learn that the traveler is home (as they are bound to), they will pay the traveler the dreaded visit demanding “their share”:—G-d help the traveler if he or she has no “gift” for the “fulani terrorist,” because, not even the routine practice of Diaspora travelers hiring bodyguards for the trip and for their stay at home will save the traveler from bodily harm or even death.

When restore, the Sovereign Independent Nation of Biafra with its autonomous groupings will finally and completely put an end to such endless headache, bellyache, and expensive exploitation of our people. Enforced laws (laws made by the people, in the first place, and, for the people) and a law-abiding citizenry who participate directly in, and are in charge of, their government and governance, will bring security back to our Biafraland. Our known Culture of Honesty and Hardwork, once restored by Biafra actualization, will provide the erstwhile missing context and environment permissive of honesty, accountability, and respect for the people, respect for property and for property-ownership and respect for the law. The government of Biafra knows and understands its obligations to the people of Biafra, and will discharge those obligations with full commitment and excellence; else, be charged with contempt and malfeasance and replaced right away, should she fail the people. One positive thing comes out of our sour experience in Nigeria: Biafra will never be like Nigeria; there is no chance that Biafra will come out like murderous Nigeria. For, Biafra is the antidote to the sickness called Nigeria.

As Nigeria battle recession today, we the people of Biafra want to make our public declaration and support for the formation of our Government by consent, That is Government of the people of Biafra.

Please make this a slogan and ideology, I support the government of Biafra, The provincial government of Biafra, a Government by consent.

  79. What a way to live—or suffer—and die! in fear and an anxiety-ridden life! What a price we Biafrans and our land pay for being force-occupied by Nigeria! There are other ways that we continue to pay. For example, recently, our people have been compelled to go into a “Self-Help Only” mode by the anti-Biafran and pernicious policies of the government of Nigeria against our people. Consider that the government of Nigeria has been engaged in the Desert Reclamation Project in Northern Nigeria, spending lots of money to plant trees and groundcover, while supporting the effort with sturdy water-supply and irrigation. In so doing, a significant part of the usually arid Northern Nigeria has been turned into a belt of arable land. Thus, with Nigerian government spending and help, even professional and commercial White farmers from South African and Zimbabwe once relocated to Northern Nigeria to take advantage of the then government-created and supported farming land. Elsewhere, the government of Nigeria has constructed a Northern Nigeria-to-Niger Highway designed to provide Northern Nigerians with access to the Atlantic Ocean and or the Mediterranean Sea. Contrast that with what the same government of Nigeria has done in Biafraland—or, has not done. Federal Nigeria roads in the region are either not constructed, not completed, or not serviced at all. The crucial Onicha Bridge has not been repaired, never mind, rebuilt. There is a concerted effort on the part of Nigeria to actively deny the region functional International airports while other parts of Nigeria are practically littered with such airports, even when it is a known that local flying clientele are scarce. So, how do our people respond? “Self-help,” they call it. We are supposed to tax ourselves—and will, in fact do so, in order to build in our land what the Nigerian government is supposed to provide. For example, the Erosion Problem in the northern parts of Biafra territory is a problem of inter-National and inter-Regional magnitude with its epicenter in Biafraland. This is a problem so massive that only governments can tackle. But, not the government of Nigeria! and not while Biafraland bears the worst of it. As such, we lose lives, lose property, lose real estate for farming, for habitation, and lose ecological systems, our so-called Self Help efforts completely dwarfed and rendered a joke by the size and complexity of the problem that confronts us. But, that’s not even all we are paying for this. We also pay every time Nigeria favors other regions with government projects: we fund Nigeria’s expenses, directly, to the tune of 95%, through Biafra’s Delta Oil or our hard earned taxed funds from our creative industries.

G-d bless you and the good people of Biafra

  84. Anonymous September 17, 2016 at 7:12 AM , I hope LINDA IKEJI allow this reply come through to you, even though you re Anonymous which means you are either protecting your identity because of the criminality of Nigeria state or you re-involve in it.

Thank you for bringing up two important Topic i would treat here, one self-hating Igbo man called Joe Igbokwe and his Hausa and Yoruba bosses, his a Coon and know Igbo recognise or know him, even in our town union his known as a sellout self-hate without a single element of truth.

I can see clearly that you are one of those using 1966 military coup of Nigeria officers to target "Igbos" for ethnic cleansing, your statement clearly said it. Since you are one of those using the 1966 coup as a justification for the numerous ethnic cleansing targeted at the Igbos let me drop quick fact checkpoint for all readers.

Before Nigeria got independent, In the year 1945 in the North Central city of Jos and saw hundreds of thousands of Igbos being butchered by Northern Muslim youths for no just cause.

The ethnic cleansing got worse in Kano, The killing of 1953 when hundreds of thousands of Igbos were again dispatched to the great beyond in the cruelest manner and for no just cause other than the fact that we were Igbos and refuse to accept the conquest by the caliphate.

Now this two event predate the COUP tagged Igbo coup even when facts showed that Hausa Yoruba-Igbo all were involved in the coup.

I'm a strong believer in separation of this unholy union.
Buhari has abused the memory of our loved ones who died in the hands of Nigeria enough.
