The convener of the advocacy group for the missing Chibok girls, Bring Back Our Girls BBOG, Oby Ezekwesili, has replied the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who two days ago, said the activities of BBOG was threatening the peace of Abuja (read
here). While speaking at the daily sit out of the group at the Unity Fountain, Ezekwesili said nobody can threaten the group and that the IG needs to educate himself properly about democracy.
“Our response is that he (IGP) should ask for the file that recorded our advocacy between 2014 and 2015 when the previous administration used all kinds of tactics similar to this one to try to violate our constitutional liberty. Not only did the constitution uphold that right, the court also upheld our rights. He should just read this files, he should be able to find what he needs in order to educate himself properly about democracy and citizens’ right to peaceful assembly. We are a peaceful movement as everyone knows, so we are not changing anything, no retreat, no surrender. Are our girls back? If the government says that we are unreasonable in demanding for our Chibok girls in the way that we have been demanding for them since 2014, they need to show the evidence that counters our stance".

Deletethat i agree, the IGP is overstepping his statutory responsibilities; there is no condition in our statute laws or constitution that anybody should seek permission of the Police before proceeding on demonstration or protest; the law only provide that you inform the Police so as to grant you protection while on the process to avoid the breakdown of law and orders; IGP is only trying to impress the government to serve his job and get confirmation as it has happened already; he has achieved his goals; bloody fool.

ReplyDeleteFrankly, I am trying real hard to restrain myself from using certain expressions here in describing the way I feel about both the IGP and certain commenters on this forum for their disposition on the BBOG's campaign. It is share wickedness for anyone to doubt if, indeed, these girls were taken from their school dormitory. It is equally heartless for the IGP to infer that peaceful efforts geared towards finding them is threatening public peace. What threatens my peace is definitely not the protests to ensure we don't forget them but these moves to stifle peaceful gatherings called to nudge the authorities towards finding them. I am so angry with the goings on, and if I were not a civil servant, I would be out there matching too. Thank you.
