Buhari's anti-corruption war is scaring away investors- Ben Murray-Bruce

According to Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, President Buhari's anti-corruption campaign is doing more harm to the economy than good as it's scaring investors from investing in the economy. He says the war against corruption has put fear in the minds of Nigerians that want to invest in a business that might attract the attention of the antigraft agency. He said this while speaking at the senate debate on the Economy during plenary yesterday September 22nd.
"If you look at Nigeria today, nobody is buying land, nobody is buying houses. Rent is actually is coming down. The economy has shut down. The reason why this is happening is because of Fear. Everybody is afraid. You cannot run a 21st century economy where everybody is terrified. Everybody is afraid of being arrested. As long as you have fear in the system, you will not invest your money in that economy"he said

  23. sen Ben bruce is right even the foreign investors are afraid of coming to Nigeria because of the body language of the president.how i wish pres.Buhari can understand this earlier before everything go worst.

  24. China has a more unfriendly stand against corruption and the foreign investment there is so massive,,if this man does not have commonsense i think he should keep quite rather than expose how daft he is for reason to be heard!

  25. The Guilty are afraid. If you have earned your money properly why would you be afraid of investing the money in property and other assets? We also do not want foreign thieves to invest in Nigeria because they will only be here to plunder and to leave our society deeper in the rotten depths of corruption and societal decay.

We shouldn't fight Buhari for declaring a war on corruption, rather we should be concerned about the quality of that war effort: Buhari can give directions but those who prosecute the effort (EFCC, DSS, ICPC, Police and the Courts) have the immediate responsibility for the quality of that effort. Unfortunately, within his team there will still be those who have not bought into the idea of a corruption free or, at least, minimal society and will continue to sabotage the campaign through their corrupt activities. There will also be those who will now use the powers granted to them for witch-hunting and personal vendettas, which is also a corruption of the original intentions. These are corrupt examples and the war against corruption must also address such phenomena. We, and not just Buhari, as Civil Society, are the ones who must insist on that quality being delivered through our participation in civil action, especially, when we perceive a corruption of the effort itself.

We must also be warned that those that have fed from the swills off corruption and suckled from the breast of that beast, will not bear to be torn away from the vile nutrition. They will squeal every unjustifiable accusation (Witch hunt, tribal and religious vendetta, he doesn’t like my face etc.) in order to win the sympathy of the unwary Nigerian, who had been, hitherto, considered unworthy even of the droppings of that orgy, while those that were unlucky enough to have fed from the droppings would rather the orgy continues to feed them rather than that they wait for a proper seat at the banquet that a corruption free or minimal society will deliver. These are the ones who are now rooting for corruption and will not go down without a fight. We must, as Nigerians, be wise and wary and be ready to question every intention and utterance of those who had been caught with their hands in the till, those who can’t account for their riches (characteristic of thieves) lest they continue to profit from our folly.

That being said we must also continue to critique the performance of Buhari and his team in the anti-corruption war, as our contribution to the effort, and to back it up, when necessary, with civil action.

  26. I beg to disagree. If rent is coming down is it not a good thing? Nigeria economy can progress without illicit funds which is what the honourable Senator is advocating Buhari allows to boost the economy.

  27. Bruce should shut his trap. How will anti corruption war scare genuine investors with clean money. Dangote is investing in one of the single largest Refinery in the world, why is he not scared. You are only scared when you source of wealth is criminal. Bros just go and sit down jare.

  28. Commonsense senator! you must be talking about CORRUPT investors as clear conscience fears no accusation.

  31. Who voted for this brainless senator-is he serious at all-China has zero tolerance for corruption-so we as a developing nation should allow that. Does he think before opening his mouth?

  32. Ben Bruce just prove to us the kind of senator who like just to just talk without deep thinking. So everyone is scare to buy land, build houses all of a sudden right? For your information, people are still building houses, buying new expensive cars doing many great things in lagos. As long as your hands are clean, I do not think you are the one Buhari is hunting. Those that went to burry millions of dollars in soak away, hide doolars in farms, buying billions of properties in a 1year old child's name, those that put $30miilion in their maids account are who the efcc are looking for. Bro Bruce, I know you know a few of these people, please tell tem to bring out those money wherever they kept them and see our economy coming out of recession instantly. Thank you

We know who they are, they go into other people's country and thrive on its corrupt environment leaving social and economic ruins in its wake.
