Hollywood actress Tika Sumpter reacts to Chimamanda Adichie's controversial claims about Michelle Obama's natural hair

American actress and model Tika Sumpter has reacted to Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's seemingly controversial comments where she concluded that president Obama would not have been elected if the FLOTUS rocked her natural hair.

Sumpter and co-star Parker Sawyers are set to bring the Obamas' love story to life on the big screen, playing young Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama in the film "Southside With You"

In an August 9th interview with Britain's Channel 4 News, Ms Adichie says that Mrs Obama could not get away with natural hair because of the negative stereotypes associated with it, adding that the first lady's natural hair would prevent Barack Obama from being elected president in 2008.

"I've often said that if Michelle Obama had natural hair when Barack Obama was running for President, he would not have won because her natural hair would have signified certain things to people. It would signify that she's some sort of militant, neo-Black Panther, frightening" Adichie explains.

In a recent interview on BET, the 36-year-old The Haves and the Have Nots star who is expecting her first child, was asked about the Nigerian writer's comment.

"You can have natural hair and still blow it out and it'll be straight," she started saying. "I've had hair where it looked permed but it wasn't. It was in my natural state but I just blew it out. I don't know. I mean... What does that mean?"

Parker chipped in, saying just the fact that they earned their spot in the White House as an African-American family is proof enough that nothing else matters.

"I would say that Barack Hussein Obama... Who thought he could be president?" he said. "Then who thought a Black family would be in the White House anyway? No offense to the author, but I think he still would've been elected."

"I don't know if I can even answer that question," Tika added. "I think the character of these two would've shined through regardless. Natural hair or not. I don't really know. I mean, I understand what she's saying, but I don't really know about that. That's a pretty intense statement because you're basing an outside characteristic on the character of the human being."

  15. She must be a daft Akata. What Adichie is saying is very true. A black person with a natural style is seen at militant, even if the person is not militant. All people stereotype, especially white people. Why did they even ask this school dropout anything? Nonsense

  17. Why don't black people go and develop their own country?!! Getting hung up on hair in another man's country. Come here and demand that freedom of speech be respected, that would be something.

  18. Tika completely missed the point of Chimamanda's statement. I'm not surprised though. Adichie is really intelligent so I'm not surprised her comment's flew over Tika's head.

  22. She thinks she's all that, dining with the brits ,is fooling her imagination of I BELONG ,but behind the closed door ,she's still a negro,a monkey, and everything else, that's the mentality of a house niggar ,she never went through the struggle of African-Americans that gave her the platform to shine .coming out of deep village of Africa ,she will have end up waaaay-back of the BUS. She needs to worry about the effect of Biafra war on the easterners from generation to generation ,still presume as traitors and will never be allow to smell the highest office of the land. That's what she needs to worry about.

  23. So Tika Sumpter doesn't agree on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's views.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's views didn't fly over Tika Sumpter's head.

African - Americans are different from Nigerians, it's that simple.

    1. There is nothing wrong with Tika's views. We all must not always agree with Chimamada. I am with Tika on this. Obama's election came at a time majority of Americans were clamouring for change and Obama's acts in politics and even education coupled with his lifestyle and beliefs is what wowed people. Sometimes we are too myopic and hung up on things like skin colour and hair texture. When your true personality shines through positively, how you look like becomes secondary and even melts into oblivion.
