Abia: INEC South East commissioner explains why he issued certificate of return to Uche Ogah

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has explained why it issued a certificate of return to Uche Ogah, despite an appeal filed by the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, after the Monday June 27th order by the Federal High Court, Abuja, removing him from office and mandating INEC to immediately issue a certificate of return to his rival at the PDP state governorship primaries in 2014, Uche Ogah.

Speaking to newsmen after the presentation of the certificate of return to Ogah, the INEC National Commissioner for South East, Lawrence Nwuruku, said he was just obeying the court order...

According to him, he had to obey the court order so that he will not be sent to jail for disobeying the ruling of a court.
"We are simply obeying the court order. The court said with immediate effect, without wasting of any time, that INEC should issue that certificate. We just obeyed the court order. If tomorrow another court overrules, I am by God's grace the INEC National commissioner representing South East, I will do the same thing. We are not above the court. The court says we should give certificate of return to the person won and that is Dr Uchechukwu Ogah. That is why we have given him. I was the one who gave the certificate initially to Ikpeazu because he was declared winner. Now the court says otherwise and we cannot do otherwise. We are not above the law. Another person we obey is God. My conscience is clear and my conscience is my God. If you were in the court, the judgement was wonderful and direct. The court says we must issue the certificate of return. It says if we don't do that, they can arrest us and jail us. I am not prepared to go to jail for anybody"he said

  2. of course he has the right to obey the court order; must Gov Ikpeazu remained in office to appeal the case, why couldn't he hand over to the Secretary to Govt and pursue his case pending the final level of adjudication?

Ekpo u av a good point but to avoid ambiguity of law and create a legal birkmack we are of the opinion let inec wait till d court of appeal upholds d high court judgment. Bc0os it bcoms chickylicky if ikpeazu is thrown out he appeals d court of appeal favors him and re enstates him then ogar is removed dat means it back and frontit creates a lacuna

    1. When last did you visit Abia? That state is an eyesore. Nothing to show that a governor is ruling in that state. Have you visited Aba of recent? That's about the dirtiest city in the whole of Nigeria and you say that Ikpeazu is doing well? My dear we need to be forward thinking. Let's give someone else a chance to govern.I weep for my state Abia!

The other internal streets are under construction. P.s Aba is one of the most planned cities in nigeria. Google can help you further. Do stop lying. Mbok.im from akwa ibom but I stand by truth.

  13. I can see the Abians are really not wise people. The money that could have been used to develop their state is now used to pay group of SAN and lawyers who are not even Igbos. Okezie is against grazing and formed vigilante to protect his people against the Fulani, that's why they want to pull him down by all means. But his name is Victor, so ordained victory awaits him.

  17. Arrant rubbish and balderdash! Was he not aware of the fact the the present Governor had filed an appeal? And if that is ,the law simply saws status Quo be maintained until the outcome of the appeal?I listened carefully to him on Channrels TV he sounded very incoherent and unbecoming of an INEC national commisioner.I just hope he hadn't been compromised

  18. From his explanation, one is beginning to doubt his qualification. I hope this man is qualified to be an INEC commissioner?

  19. Ebere shame in you. You are asking Ebere when last did he visited Aba, well when last did they allow this man to drink cup. This man has been suffering from opostion since he won as governor if Abia State. He has been battling one party or group of party. They ve not allow this man to rest... Making him to divert revenues that are meant for state development into trivia issues. Abaians has never got Ngwa man as governor.. Aba has suffered set bk since the day of Orji Uzo and his successors. Now, this man was put to help build Aba back...the Bended will never rest until his is removed. And my Ngwa people is such an ass hole. They ohuhu people kept using them. Tufiakwa. Dr Ikpeazu, I sincerely prayed you come outta all these mess.
