Senegalese woman based in Nigeria Fatma Samoura appointed as FIFA's Secretary General (photo)

Senegalese UN diplomat Fatma Samoura was named FIFA's new secretary General by FIFA president Gianni Infantino today in Mexico, during FIFA's 66th International congress.

Fatma Samoura currently lives in Nigeria and was appointed personally by Infantino today at the 66th FIFA Congress according to FIFA statues. Her appointment will make her the first female number two ever at world football's governing body, FIFA.

Infantino says she was appointed as he aims to promote values such as Gender equality, zero-tolerance for racism and corruption with new leadership as he begins his tenure as FIFA President.

The former secretary general, Jerome Valcke of France, was sacked in January and banned from football for 12 years over misconduct in television deals and World Cup ticket sales, one of the many scandals that hit FIFA.
Markus Kattner has been acting as the Secretary General since Infantino was elected as president back in February.
