Man jailed in Kirirkiri prison for stealing formula to feed his newborn baby

A 28-year-old man, Nurudeen Sulaimon, has been arrested and jailed for allegedly stealing formula worth N45,000 from a supermarket to feed his newborn baby who was crying for food. It is alleged that Sulaimon went to a supermarket and stole some tins of SMA Gold infant formula but his action was caught on the supermarket's CCTV. He was apprehended on his way out of the supermarket by the store's security men and handed to the police.
He was arrested and taken to the police station. At the station, he begged for forgiveness saying that he had a newborn baby who hadn't had any food to eat except water.

He said his wife had given birth to the baby last week Saturday, but wasn't producing enough breast milk to feed the baby, he said they tried giving the baby water on that fateful day but the water didn't seem to soothe the baby so he went out to get some formula to feed it.

He was charged to court for theft but he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola granted Sulamon bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. He was remanded in prison at Kirikiri until he perfected his bail.

The case was adjourned till April 27.

  5. While our politicians are there stealing billions without any prosecution, God knows

    ReplyDelete
  6. Stealing is wrong but being thrown in jail is not right. What makes you think he can afford the bail when he can't afford baby food?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh oh, sad indeed, but stealing for good reasons isn't right, and it doesn't make his action right. It's a sorry situation though

  8. Hmmm this is how far, poverty can take some persons to. But if done proper investigations and they find out he really has a new born child I think instead of keeping him he should be bail without any sum and given an immediate employment. Don't know if am wrong?

Crime na crime..Whether to save life or not...maybe if the news caption was"man locked up for killing owner of supermarket over baby food"then I would understand it's crime...we all do things for a reason.the owner of the supermarket also has needs too which he meets with d money from the shop.maybe he has a baby @ home too

  10. Wow!!! Things are really tough these days. I just feel sorry for the little baby and wished the father had begged than putting himself in a big trouble.

  11. What a world! The manager of that supermkt should have go to the man's house to see if what he is saying is true n take it from there. Secondly they should know that poverty is in circulation now n give the man time to pay up. Now just for 45k the man is in kirikiri.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hmmmm, a touching story. He would have begged instead of stealing that much
Goods worth45k is really too much for d baby for just that day,he would have just begged got akamu n small sachet milk instead of stealing no one will justify his action because it's for a baby.

  13. They should av released him out of compassion and even bought tins of milk for his baby. Poor man. Linda, pls give me his address. Let me take milk to his wife and baby. Thank u

  14. First he should have pleaded for mercy rather than not guilty, secondly, why granted a man who could not avoid N2000 for baby food bail for N50,0000. But those who stole billions are walking freely on the the street. May God help us in this country.

Next he'll rob a bank with the excuse of paying the child tuition. Let him face the full wrath of the law

  59. Abegi, though we all know that stealing should not be condoned but they should free the guy joor...what about those people in agbada and suits out there that have stolen our common wealth and are moving around town flaunting it on our faces and nothing has been done to them. Its very obvious that the guy is jobless and so much should be done to create more jobs so as not to encourage this type of crime to feed his family. That's my own 2 cent comment.

  60. Abeg, linda I will like to pay the bail for these man, if only I can certain that his claims is true. There is no limit to what a man can do for his family.our laws sha...how can you jail a man for shoplifting, and people stealing billions are walking freely in the same country. you can try this in SA.

  80. My moral upbringing and Biblical belief condemns stealing. However, growing my mom taught me kindness and empathy and so does Jesus!

Which man in his right senses could steal baby formulae just for the thrill or because he could? This act was just out of desperation! This is the kind of people that deserves help!

Did you hear him LInda? his baby has been crying our of hunger and he just couldn't stand the suffering any more!!! What if this guy is being owed salary by our dear luxurious and rich political office holders? What if this guy never broke the law before now? How come it is only the poor that are convicted in Nigeria?

Linda, I was reading a story in the US last month, a single went to the grocery store, and she STOLE EGGS. The POLICEMAN that caught her, paid for the egg, bought her other FOOD items to go and feed her child. He said, "I know you are not a thief, but hunger and love for your children could make you do stuffs"

LInda, these are people, human beings , empathetic and understanding not people that derive joy in inflicting suffering on other people like most Nigerians!

The JUdge should go home and eat dinner with his family while the man is KIRIKRI prison with hardened criminals, his wife hungry and the hospital and the new baby starving

God will not hesitate to judge EVERYONE that contributes to the suffering of the poor people in this country. He will judge ALL the people that took what belongs to Nigerians and left the poor hunger and on the street. The might have food to eat today and their children abroad, but the tears of that infant would speak against ALL of them till eternity.

Linda, i know you use your blog for a good cause, this is a good cause! fight for this innocent, starving infant! recall the picture of the 5 month's old Yemen Baby you posted yesterday that died of hunger? may it not happen to this baby!

  81. Well, to me I wouldn't go fast on judgement....... First the economy is not encouraging and at d same time it is difficult to believe any story from Nigerians.... I believe only God and d man in question knows d truth and only if further investigation is carried out to determine if he has a child or not.......... If he has a child help d baby, but if he doesn't punish him and get him a job afterwards......... "WORDS OF WISDOM"

  82. They still wanted to collect 50,000/- from someone who stole milk to feed his baby to pay prison warders...... if this young guy's claim is true, i can only promise to dash him 20,000/- while someone else could support.

I can be reach on fasegz@gmail.com for the payment detail....

kindly help this poor family. Any mother and a loving father who have tested poverty will understand this man's action and will not blame him at all. I suggest if possible to go visit him and get the full gist. use this medium to seek for financial help for them if not for any other thing for the new born baby. I am sure Nigerians will be willing to help them. It is a pity, People are suffering in this country. Thank you Linda for the good work.
