‘It is only those involved in the hoarding and diverting of petroleum products that will be arrested’ – Nigerian Police

In a new statement released, the Nigerian Police have clarified their position on a statement released days ago which implied that IGP Arase had ordered Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police & other officers to arrest anybody found selling petroleum products in plastic containers. Apparently, the directive was to arrest those involved in hoarding and diversion of fuel. The statement reads,

“IGP ORDERS THE ARREST, PROSECUTION OF PERSONS HOARDING AND DIVERTING PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

Further to the Nigeria Police Force directives on the activities of unscrupulous elements who engage in illegal sale of petroleum products, there is need to make some clarification that the directive was specifically targeted at those who are involved in hoarding and diverting the petroleum products.

However, those with genuine intention to use the products for their legal and genuine business are allowed to purchase the products.

The IGP emphasized that no stone will be left unturned by the Police to checkmate those with the attitude of causing discomfort to the innocent citizens in the country.”

  6. The IGP is on point to make a clarification on this matter as i saw some plain cloth policemen along lekki axis yesterday arresting those selling fuel in jerry cans. This cannot be among the category mentioned,as they are not hoarding or diverting the product.Methink some of our overzealous POLICE officers should take note as they are merely serving the needs of those that cannot go through the terrible experience of long que in fuel stations and for those that would like to power their generator due to the current epileptic power supply being experienced in the country.

  14. We know how this always end, policemen arrest hoarders, hoarders settle and freed, re-arrested again, settle and freed, then hoarders become known customers, no more arrests but settling, so innocent users start getting arrested. If there are enough fuel in circulation, we won't be talking about this.
