If you Google 'Unprofessional hairstyles for work' ...images mostly display black women with natural hair

A lot of black women with natural hair are a little outraged that Googles images for “Unprofessional hairstyles for work” only displays natural black women. After the cut is an article from The Guardian

Recently, an MBA student named Rosalia discovered something alarming: Googling “unprofessional hairstyles for work” yielded image results mainly of black women with natural hair, while searching for the “professional” ones offered pictures of coiffed, white women.

Often the hair styles themselves were not vastly different — only the hair type and the wearer’s skin.

Rosalia’s tweet has since been retweeted thousands of times – more than 6,200 in the first 24 hours, she says – as her discovery sparked discussion on implicit racial biases against black people in the workplace. Can an algorithm itself be racist? Or is it only reflecting the wider social landscape?

  16. Let the U.S then introduce the hijab so that hair issues can become a no issue. How can one define what hairstyle is professional or not? Are the women supposed to have crew cut like in the military?

  29. Whites are racist..especially america. The media too is quick to convey negative stereotypes of africans too. The best way to tackle racism is to change what's causing people to view that culture as substandard. That basically means that we have to prove them wrong, not necessarily by doing what they expect but by doing things our own way in a manner that will advance our culture. The whites as usual will become so inquisitive...just like they now run to asian countries out of excitement to experience their culture then update it on YouTube. The respectful way they write about those cultures will make you think they hate their own.
If we continue in this way, where african countries receive aid from their colonial masters, only to squander it stupidly without taking care of our people..We'l only be seen as incompetent, so is anything associated with us. After all, I know for a fact that if white women have curly or afro hair, it won't be on those photos. And if black women have straight hair, it will still appear on these photos. The sooner we learn, the better.

  30. Do your research yourself, if you click on this pictures to read the stories, they are articles on how to rock kinky hair, and why people assume kinky hair are not professional

  31. Well it's not Google's fault,
Organisations and websites have tagged those pictures with that keyword. The Google engine displays it based on keywords Used in the search

  37. You guys should stop looking for trouble where there is none. Every little thing is racist to you and don't believe everything you read; I learnt that years ago. I just checked myself and yes there are women with textured hair and their was also "oyinbo" hair so unprofessional styles isn't limited to black peopl's hair.
And to the people complaining about how some women are not allowed to work because they have kinky hair, it's not the fault of the employers. They have to please their customers; therefore employ what what (or in this case, what type of hair they like)
    So get over yourselves

  38. Linda did u do an actual search for the results (images) on Google? The results don't show what u claim but rather show the topic your post addresses. Your post should've been about the criticism Google is facing because of the results of the search for "unprofessional hairstyles for work" on google

  39. Duh, idiot, they've fixed it so that's why it's gone. Do you think it would have caused an uproar without being real?
