Re: Writer recounts assasination attempt in Ikoyi...the real story is even scarier!

Yesterday, I shared an eyewitness account of an alleged assassination attempt on Kingsway road, Ikoyi. (Read here) But according to a friend of the victim, it wasn't an assassination attempt...it's even scarier. It was armed robbery in traffic in Ikoyi. I say this is scarier because with an assassination attempt, you know that they are targeting a particular person but armed robbery means anyone can be a victim. To be shot at by 1pm in broad day light in Lagos traffic is incredibly scary. Read the man's version of events after the cut...

I read the above captioned ‎ story on your blog today and i want to correct the story.

First, it was not an assassination attempt, is was a case of traffic robbery. The same news you have carried over and over for months but our present Governor doesn't seem to have a clue on how to arrest this menace.

My friend was driving in from Dolphin Estate on Alfred Rewane Road (Former Kingsway Road), when he got to the traffic light around Golden Gate Restaurant. There was the usually heavy traffic on the road at that time (1:30pm) and he was waiting for the light to turn green. All of a sudden, he noticed a boy walk up to the car in front of him (a black Toyota Prado) and he thought it was a beggar. But when the guy got to his car ( A white coloured Land Rover LR4 and not bullet proof as stated by the writer), he noticed the guy had a gun.

The robber wanted his Rolex watch, wallet and phones but luckily for him, the light turned green and the cars ahead moved so he drove off. It was in the process of driving off that the robber shot at him. The bullet pieced the car, missed his torso but went through his hand (miraculously).

Anyway, to cut story short, he is presently admitted in a hospital where he underwent a successful surgery last night to treat his bullet wound on the right hand.

Now we have continuously read about these street robberies and often times in places that we don't usually go to and i know people who have commented that God help them. But with this occurring on Alfred Rewane at 1:30pm in the afternoon at the peak of Lagos traffic, then you can see the chill it runs up one's spine.

I hope a rich man ( we call them Big Man here) or a big man's child doesn't get killed or maimed first before they decide to do something about all this traffic robberies.

So Linda, that's the whole story.

Please suggest what the Lagos State government ought to do to be considered proactive in security issues. The current IGP seem not to have a clear cut agenda as to his responsibilities and as such the state CPs equally appear clueless (ah this word again !). Peace!

  49. I sincerely hope our Governor reads my comment. I salute the recent purchase of equipment for the security forces in Lagos State, however the equipments are being misused by the Nigerian Police. Let's start from the power bikes mounted by the Police, this equipments are solely used by them to run after and in most cases run down unsuspecting motorist you have violated traffic lights. I am certain that these equipments were not purchased for this narrow purpose. Most times the offending motorist would have to fork out an amount to be released by these men in black. Now to the white patrol cars, carefully embellished with a large American looking logo and signal lights, as beautiful and inspiring as these vehicles look, they are being abused by our police. The sole purpose and I repeat the sole purpose of the vehicles are for running after and apprehending vehicles with covered plate numbers or those with tinted windows. As I had mentioned earlier, I don't support any act that runs contrary to the law, however the sole purpose of the equipments is to make Lagos safe from hoodlums, armed robbers and car jackers. The unfortunate thing about all this that the Nigeria Police have bow been empowered with brand new mobility to harass and oppress the public while the men of the underworld continue to kill, maim and undermine the efforts of the present government.
All said, I employ the government of lagos state to check the exesses of the police men by constant monitoring and encouragement of feedback from Lagosians.

  56. It is unfortunate the police in Lagos has failed to leave up to their responsibilities. Ambode has done well to provide the police with proper vehicles, bikes etc but what does the police do in return? To chase innocent citizens in tibred cars..demanding to see tint permit.. Last month I has just come back from a month travel. .picked my dusty car from my office cat park and was heading home when at Jakande roundabout I was doubled crossed by the police in their new white flashy car brandishing their guns out I should stop immediately. ..i was scared...i couldn't figure out what was happening..I stopped and they demanded for my tint permit which I showed them...After which they begged for me to fuel their car...Fast forward 2 weeks later I was going home by 9pm...observed another set of police officers in their new flashy car driving slowly on d service lane..as soon as drove past I heard the sirens come on and noticed I was being chased....All cos I was driving a tinted car...but this time I didn't bother to slow down...It is time the police commissooner in lagos state be removed as him self and his boys are clueless on how to handle the security situation in the state.

  60. oK, my opinion. it was an assassination attempt not robbery. some assassination, hide behind robbery so dat d true person behind it, is hidden in d dark.
REASON. d location- we all know ikoyi houses several dignitaries, embassies, banks and multi national corporations thereby making it one of the safest place in Lagos.
2nd is d time. which robber will risk his life,to rob u of ur watch by 1.30pm. except he plans on committing suicide.
3rdly. most traffic robbers dont rob wit gun, but if dey do most of der guns dont have bullet.
Lastly, d robber shot to kill at his victim after he failed, knowing daT d shot might attract police and oda security agents to d scene.
While, wat do i know, i might still b wrong, am just a wonderer.

  80. The LASG should clear chase away all the beggars and boys pretending to clean windscreens from the roads including all junctions in Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Some of these boys are in their late 20's and 30's and they force themselves on car owners who are not on alert. It is clear that the little change they receive from car owners cannot sustain them. These are potential criminals.
