Four of the victims shot dead were members of both IPOB and MASSOB, while one person is said to be a soldier, who was grabbed by the mob, angry with the way soldiers opened fire on the jubilating crowd that included non pro-Biafra agitators, and fell four of them before they ran, leaving the victims behind.
All the markets around the Niger Bridge Head, including the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha Patent and Propitiatory Medicine Dealers Market (Ogbo Ogwu Market) and other markets located around the bridge, including Abada Market were quickly shut down, following sporadic shooting by the military to scare the jubilant crowd away.
An eye-witness at the Onitsha Head Bridge, who was coming from Asaba end of the bridge, said the Biafra agitators were said to be marching on the road near the River Niger Bridge, chanting solidarity songs in jubilation of the release of Nnamdi Kanu, when they were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered them to go back, an altercation occurred which made the soldiers allegedly open fire on them.
Another version of the story was that, the pro-Biafra agitators and those sympathetic to their cause, were jubilating, singing and dancing near the bridge, the soldiers who had been guiding the bridge since the last shooting, got incensed by the jubilation and opened fire on the protesters which caused the death of unarmed protesters.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ali Okechukwu confirmed the clash and accused the pro-Biafra agitators of mobilizing over I00 of their members to launch attack on the soldiers at the Niger Bridge Head and even tried to dispossess them of their guns.
Speaking on the incident, leader of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu said the news of the release of Mr. Kanu elicited singing, dancing and jubilation in Onitsha and other ‘Biafran’ lands and those in Onitsha took their dance to Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu plaque at the Niger Bridge Head and out of envy, and because of the singing and dancing, and banters they were throwing with one another, the soldiers, who mounted a road-block there, opened fire on the dancing protesters and killed four.
He said that no amount of intimidation, harassment and killing of their members will make them resort to violence, adding that “the military is doing all sorts of things to push us into violence, but we will never do that because that is what has been setting us free in all the harassment and intimidation we have been going through.”

ReplyDeleteJust because of religious sentiments and hatred for Islam, people were supporting the soldiers that opened fire on the Shiites, even though they weren't supposed to block the road but opening fire on them shouldn't be the alternative. What do you have to say now about killing of unharmed dancers. If you refuse to be objective and shun hatred, you are encouraging evil to spread. Maybe people will be wise with their words now. smh. We have a long way to go in this country.
ReplyDeleteAll this killing of innocent civilians didn't happen during Jonathan's time. Buhari brought all sorts of violence to this country. Hundreds of people have died under his watch
ReplyDeleteNigeria Army is becoming uncontrollably chaotic. So they can't control these pple without killing them? Shame

ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with our soldiers? Can someone just imagine? shooting dancing and jubilating people who were happy. is shooting the only alternative Nigerian soldiers know how to? ReplyDeleteOMG what a waste hmmm I hope they will stop all this senseless protest and killing now pls!!!
ReplyDeleteThis Army pple self. Is it now a crime to jubilate? And 5 pple re now dead because of their recklessness. If they don't like being happy or seeing happy people, why not cover their faces with Handkerchief or shot their self to death so that they will not witness it. May God Take Care Of Us.
ReplyDeleteMay the souls of those dead people rest in peace.
the military should learn to take things easy.there are many ways of handling issues.
ReplyDeleteNawaoh.....don't want anyone to die
ReplyDeleteAfter one Igbo hater will pick up the police version of the story and accuse IPOB AND MASSOB members of attacking first.

May their souls find repose. Btw, it appears the most recurring word in the average Igbo persons diction is 'envy.' The way they throw the word around, one will be forgiven to believe they invented the word, lolsss
ReplyDeletei think our security forces need to be taught crowd control and how to act during demonstrations. opening fire aat any given opportunity and killing unarmed civilians would only worsen the situation.
ReplyDeleteDis pple shld go and relax a bit, pls let d sleeping dog lie
ReplyDeleteEnter your comment...ogao end time things ddey should try nd settle dis protest nah... Enough of blood shed nah abba ..
ReplyDeleteNo threats, no weapons, no warcry of Allahu Akbar! Where are those hypocritical, self-serving British and Americans? They won't say anything now.
ReplyDeleteBet why would the military open fire on them na? Is it a crime again to jubilate? Not that am in support of biafra, but they would have left them to do their thing and go ah.
ReplyDeleteThis was supposed to be sometin peaceful not scary....quite sad!
ReplyDelete“the military is doing all sorts of things to push us into violence, but we will never do that because that is what has been setting us free in all the harassment and intimidation we have been going through.”
ReplyDeleteI've given up on this country's military. Is this the way to handle things?? Dnt they know this their sporadic killings aggravates people the more?

ReplyDeleteUnfortunate incidence.
ReplyDeletePeople should stop acting uneducated. Only judge when you have True facts. How on earth can soldiers open fire on people dancing and singing. MASSOB and the likes should stop the hate propaganda as this will only create more chaos in the East. People should learn from history!
ReplyDeleteThis is police brutality. Killing unarmed people. When this happens in America, you see people shouting and calling out America as being racist. Now it's happening in Nigeria and no one is batting an eye. Nigerians wake the hell up, if we keep treating ourselves as nobodys, that is what we will become...nobodys.
ReplyDeleteLool that's 4 less terrorists on the street to deal with. After fighting for his release, you went to go and die ontop of another man's headache. Lol fools.
ReplyDeleteNaawaoo..all dis shud stop naah!! *crying
ReplyDeleteThe Government is wicked, the military is insane, the police is just a set of imbeciles, other wise how can a sane man lift gun and release fire on a happy unarmed civilian celebrating God for his goodness in freeing their leader. This is yet another evidence that Nigeria has never been and will never be one again. Up IPOB, on Biafra freedom we stand.
ReplyDeletekilling themselves over nothing!
ReplyDeleteI believe there are better ways to calm an angry mob or protesters than pulling the triggers. A little value for civilian life can take us farther than we have gone so far, seriuosly!!!
ReplyDelete
