US military to conduct missions against Boko Haram inside Nigeria

The U.S. military will carry out surveillance and intelligence missions against Boko Haram inside Nigeria as part of its deployment to West Africa, sources familiar with the plan told AFP on Friday, October 17. The counter operations will be carried out as part of the recently announced deployment of up to 300 US military personnel to neighboring Cameroon, officials said.

"This is going to be part of our Boko Haram efforts that will be operating throughout the region," one of the sources apparently said on condition of anonymity.

It will not include boots on the ground or offensive combat, but will see US military operations against Boko Haram in Africa's most populous country for the first time. "It's surveillance and intelligence gathering, not anything offensive," added the same source.

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced he would send up to 300 military personnel to Cameroon. Approximately 145 have already arrived in the country. According to Pentagon officials, the US Department of Defence also has approximately 250 personnel in Niger and 85 in Chad conducting training and surveillance missions.

  12. Why do we keep announcing our strategies to fight the boko boys? That's not wise, or is it a way of reducing the fear the public is going tru? Sounds political to me. I feel it will be best to plan and carry out the plan. Announce the success of it not the intentions mbok.

    1. they refused to sell arms to the last administration because they wanted to assist the APC in discrediting the government of Jonathan, they wanted to make sure that the Jonathan administration never succeeded in the fight against boko haram because they wanted buhari to campaign on that aspect.the USA is no friend of anybody.

    2. Where has the US succeeded in ending insurgency? Iraq? Libya? Afghanistan? Syria? A helper with no track record can only help a country like Nigeria. They are setting up Nigeria for its final destruction but who cares when all our so called leaders want is power no matter the price.

  36. This life you took the words out of my mouth. USA is the the of any country that offers up its sovereignty to them as a burnt offering. We should not forget that the US government has always being interested in gaining access into the Nigerian government in the name of having a military base in West Africa. Now I believe their prayers have been answered. They've already accused the Nigerian soldiers of war crimes soon they will turn on them accusing the government of killing innocent Nigerian with its soldiers. Dissolving the present government and conducting a new election for us. My fellow Nigerians that is the way the US government operates when they gain access into country.
