Serena Williams talks racism in tennis

She's won 21 Grand Slam singles titles, with only four losses in 25 appearances in the finals yet her rival Maria Sharapova ranked higher than her on the Forbes list despite ranking lower than her professionally. Serena Williams covers this weeks New York Times mag & speaks candidly about it

Serena tells the NYT
"If they want to market someone who is white and blond, that’s their choice. I have a lot of partners who are very happy to work with me. I can’t sit here and say I should be higher on the list because I have won more.
I’m happy for her, because she worked hard, too. There is enough at the table for everyone. We have to be thankful, and we also have to be positive about it so the next black person can be No. 1 on that list. Maybe it was not meant to be me. Maybe it’s meant to be the next person to be amazing, and I’m just opening the door. Zina Garrison, Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe and Venus opened so many doors for me. I’m just opening the next door for the next person."

  25. How about the entrenched tribalists right here at home...in this very Naija? What is one to do with such undesirable elements in any forward looking community? For all those quick to shout racism this, racism that: Why not remove the log that is lodged in your eyes b/4 attempting to remove the speck from another person's eye? QED@atm

  31. As it was in the beginning so it is in the Western world but worse off in Nigeria. Nigeria's case being tribalism.

  32. Racism is a Bitch, Serena has beaten Sharapova 17 times in a row and still earns half of what Sharapova earns.

  33. Serena is a beautiful hardworking legend

  34. Truly there's racism in sports. Brands decided to hand Sharapova huge endorsements despite her under achieving just because she fits their picture perfect poster girl of tennis. She's on Forbes list because she earns more than Serena in endorsements. Even the former Russian poster girl, Anna Kournikova earned so much back then despite never winning a grand slam. Big companies are sad because Serena is unbeatable and she has shamed them by winning more slams despite their obvious neglect of handing her huge endorsements other than the pittance they hand over to her.

  37. people are saying its racism its totally wrong its only sharapova that is ahead of serena none of the other white tennis players are notably azarenka its all abt the looks and beauty and sharapova is more beautiful and beauty is always what sells with women
