Buhari orders probe on the sale of NITEL by the last administration

While receiving members of the Ministry of Information at the presidential villa today August 18th, President Buhari ordered a probe on the sale of NITEL to private investors in 2014 by the last administration, stating that he wants to know if Nigeria was short-changed.

According to the permanent secretary of the ministry Tunji Olaopa who spoke to state house correspondents after the meeting, President Buhari said the documents for the privatization should be handed over to him
"The president was also concerned about the liquidation of NITEL. He is not opposed to its privatization but he wants to know… and he wants us to bring a memo on how the whole transaction was undertaken so that he would know whether Nigeria was short-changed,” he said.
NITEL and its sister company, MTEL, were bought by a consortium owned by Skye Bank’s chairman, Tunde Ayeni, the founder of Sahara Energy, Tonye Cole, and two other companies for $242.3 million (about N42.4 billion) in December 2014.

  10. Mr. President obviously did not read Ex-President Jonathan's handover memo!
Most of what he has been up to are waste of time.
Its very simple: read the memo or get someone do it in the absence of a minister, then send for who ever is in charge of a wanting ministry to explain whatever irregularities/ambiguity you may find and spare us all these paparazzi/drama!
It goes to show that ONE INDIVIDUAL CANNOT RUN A $500 BILLION ECONOMY!

    2. Oga Red cap pls make wise comment thst is expected of you. So its ok for tbose who have cornered the wealth of the country to keep it and continue to hold the country in bondage. Their likes are ones that use their wealth to rent a crowd whenever they are called to question, use their stolen wealth to rig elections, use the stolen wealth to destabilise the Senate where corruption or bills that will move the country forward is fought against. This is not witch hunt brother. Its called stabilizing the country.

  23. d last minute-sale of NITEL/MTEL to Tunde Ayeni's NATCOM is one big scam in which our nation was shortchanged.
Arabian Amlak for Investment Limited made an offer of $919,999,999 to buy Nitel/Mtel only for it to be sold to Tunde Ayeni's NATCOM for a paltry $252.25m. Amlak felt d sale was skewed in favour of NATCOM & had to go to court.
Ayeni was also a beneficiary of d PHCN "sale" & was d guy who donated 2b naira to GEJ's campaign.
Privatization under d PDP was never about promoting efficiency but about asset stripping, sharing of our national patrimony & concentrating d assets of our nation in d hands of a privileged few like to Tunde Ayeni. Kudos to PMB. There can be no greater advocate of anti-corruption than dis president.
