Buhari cancels federal govt delegation to Hajj, to save $1million

President Buhari says there would be no federal government delegation for this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia. This is against the usual tradition of previous government where a federal government delegation will lead pilgrims to the holy land for the religious exercise.

President Buhari who said this yesterday August 10th, said the cancellation will however not stop the federal government from playing its traditional roles of providing consular, medical and security services to Nigerian pilgrims. With the decision, the government is expected to save about $1 million and N30m in local expenses.

  3. They should cancel all allocations for pilgrimage! Be it for Christian, Muslim or Ifa worshipper! Religion is a private thing and should be separate from government..."Separation of Church and State". If you chose to go, sponsor yourself or perhaps the religious houses/bodies should take it on. We are a secular state!

  6. Even though I rate hajj highly in my list of 'to dos' we really need to save all the money we can. Besides we are told by imams not to go on pilgrimage when owing money or with people's money.

  19. I agree with this, let him cancel jerusalem visit too. Nigeria is a secular state and no govt has asked to fund osun festival or any of those traditional festivals, so this is a welcome development.

  37. Government should completely hands off from things that has to do with pilgrimage. Individuals who want to go for pilgrimage should be able to sponsor themselves. Enough of politic and religion being intertwined.

  51. Finally thank God someone with sense has finally decided to show up. I have personally felt it was unnecessary. The christian pilgrimage delegation should follow suit and be scrapped.
I also feel the Federal Government should stop sponsoring christian and muslim pilgrims on their pilgrimage. If people want to go for pilgrimage and can afford it they should go. The FG should remove all these kind of unnecessary provisions and channel its resources into something more impactful and beneficial.
