Senator Patrick Leahy: With Friends Like This - By FFK

Article by former Nigerian minister, Femi Fani-Kayode..
The United States government helped Boko Haram immensly by refusing to classify them as a terrorist organisation until 2014 and by refusing to sell us arms to fight them. Worst still, they imposed an international arms embargo on us so that we could not buy arms from anyone else in the international community. When asked why they are doing this to us they tell us that it is because of the Leahy Act which prohibits them from selling arms to governments that violate the human rights of their own citizens.
They forget that we are in the middle of a bitter war and that our enemies are being sponsored and supported by both ISIL and Al Qaeda.
They forget that over 50,000 innocent Nigerians have been slaughtered in cold blood and thousands more raped and abducted during the course of that war over the last 5 years.
They disregard the fact that every day Nigerians are bleeding more and more and that our gallant Armed Forces, through no fault of their own, have not been able to get the necessary weapons to fight back effectively.

Some things are above partisan politics and this is one of them. Regardless of whichever political party we belong to we must all join forces and support the fight against Boko Haram.
We must do this regardless of party affiliation because if we don't Boko Haram will consumme us all, whether we are PDP, APC or anything else.
We love and admire the Americans and we regard their country as a bastion of good governance, justice, equity and decency. We also recognise the fact that they have brought an immense amount of good into the world over the last 100 years and that they continue to do so.
However in this matter of arms supply to our country it appears to me that a double standard is being applied. It is almost as if they want Nigeria to be brought to her knees and that they want us to be humiliated and destroyed.

All the territory that was recovered from Boko Haram by the Jonathan administration is now being threatened again or has been retaken by Boko Haram in the last few weeks.
This comes as a direct consequence of the fact that the Americans have refused to sell us arms and the new allies and friends that the Jonathan administration reached out to in their stead just a few months before leaving power together with the military assistance contracts that they entered into at the time for help in the war against Boko Haram have been terminated.

This is very sad because the immediate consequence of it is the fact that over 1000 Nigerians have been killed by Boko Haram in the last two months alone. That means over 100 people per week have been murdered by the terrorists since May 29th.

This must stop and something has to give. We must support the new government in their efforts to stem the tide and to fight terror.
This is all the more important when one considers the fact that there seems to be some hidden agenda on the part of the western powers, led by America, to ensure that we do not acquire the necessary weapons to take on Boko Haram effectively.
When one considers the position of the American government one is forced to ask the following question: w hy did they not invoke the Leahy Act against Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Ukraine, Pakistan, Yemen, Kenya and Iraq for human rights violations?
Why do they continue to supply arms to the governments of all those countries despite what they have done to many of their own citizens and those that they oppose just outside their borders?
Why is it only Nigeria that they have refused to sell arms to and that they have imposed an international arms embargo on even though we are fighting a civil war against a barbaric, relentless and evil enemy that is being sponsored by ISIL and Al Qaeda?

Given all this, I believe that it is time for us as a country to begin to reconsider who our friends really are? They say that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
You cannot say that you are our friends whilst you sit by idly and watch the blood of our people being shed on a daily basis yet you refuse to do anything about it.
We are not asking you to send troops to fight for us or to give us free arms. We are not cowards or beggars. We are simply asking to buy sophisticated arms and modern weapons from you so that we can defend our people yet you keep saying no and you are urging others not to sell to us either. This is not the act of a friend.

It is unacceptable, it is unfair and, if sustained, it will prove to be counter-productive to the interests of the Americans in our country and in the west African sub-region.
The truth is that given the attitude of the United States government I believe that it is time for us to rely far more on our Chinese and Russian friends in our collective war against terror.
I say this because it appears that the western powers and our traditional allies like the United Kingdom, France and America have left us in the lurch.

Whichever way we can be rest assured of one thing: Nigeria will never be brought to her knees and ultimately we will win this war because God is with us.
On a final note permit me to take this opportunity to respond to the words of U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, the convener and author of the Leahy Act, who has said that our Armed Forces are nothing but ''rapists and murderers''. He also said that we should ''clean up our military'' if we want the arms embargo lifted.
This type of condescending, colonial-overlord, slave-master and gung-ho language and contribution from this foreigner is most unhelpful and it is totally unacceptable. This is all the more so because his words are simply not true.

Whether the Leahy's of this world wish to accept it or not the truth is that the Nigerian Armed Forces, despite their limitations and constraints, remain one of the most outstanding, successful, courageous, battle-ready and disciplined fighting forces on the African continent.
History can attest to that and the sacrifice that those gallant young men and women in uniform make on a daily basis on the battle field in the fight against Boko Haram and in the war against terror over the last five years is a reflection of their deep patriotism and noble calling.

Referring to them as nothing but ''rapists and murderers'' is not only a sweeping statement and an absurd generalisation but it is also a deep insult to the Nigerian people and a denigration of the memory of all those courageous young men and women that fought and died on the war-front defending our country.
The truth is that Senator Leahy is nothing but a low-life redneck and so are all those that think like him and that have his mindset. He is the scum of the earth: a typically confused, ignorant, petty-minded, blinkered and racist yankee who has little understanding of world affairs, no understanding of our situation in Nigeria and Africa and no sense of history.

He owes the Nigerian people and our Armed Forces an unreserved apology and until he purges himself and renders it, I urge every self-respecting Nigerian to treat him with the contempt and disdain that he deserves.

    3. Like I've always said, I'm ashamed being on the same train with a Hausa man and I'm talking about my support for Buhari. While others supported him for his credibility, a typical Hausa man like @abokiDawarriBoy did so on tribal consideration in mind.
And this stupid, one-track minded idiot just showed that!

On to something more comment-deserving, FFK gave a great writeup there. Buhari need to read this

  11. Nigeria need to come together. This makes no damn sense at all. Why is the US so adamantly against Nigeria procuring arms to fight Boko Haram? Nigerians its time to put whatever differences you have aside and fight for one cause. This is ridiculous. I don't get this at all...We need to create a hashtag demanding the US lift the sanction against us. This makes no sense.

  13. Are we Just realizing this. To buttress this point, after France supported US in the G7 security council resolution against Russia early this year, same America gave France $35million dollar to support its colonies in the Fight against terrorism, In return, France gave aid to Cameroon, Chad and Niger to help them fight Boko haram and Ignored Nigeria where BH resides. How do we explain such? Its time we decide who our friends and Foes are. For me, its time we join BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) development Bank as a counter to western IMF and World Bank Hegemonic oppression. No super power last forever from Greece, to Roman empire, to England, to Germany and now USA shifting towards China.

  18. And like he said, any self-respecting Nigerian would be appalled by senator Leahy's remark concerning our armed forces. Its a shame that some Nigerians have no sense. One idiot who's never been to Africa before is telling you cock and bull stories about rape and murder committed by Nigerian soldiers, and you idiots are agreeing with him. Do you know the kind of atrocities American soldiers commit in Iraq and other places, some of which are documented? Yet no one has put a sanction on them for it. When some idiots comment on LIB, I just feel like slapping the foolishness out of their face because I can't believe how stupid and incredibly ignorant they sound.

  32. Mr Fanny A***hole. Even if others should speak it is not okro mouth like you. Did you ever watch any of those youtube videos where Nigerian troops were torturing the Boko Haram suspects? Did you ever see that one in which they forced the suspect to smoke marijuana? Did you ever notice that the Nigerian troops were torturing just anyone they arrested to force a confession out of them? Were you aware of how many innocent victims were suffocating to death in overcramped detention centers? Do you know that it was the high handedness of the police and the extrajudicial murder of the founder of Boko Haram and his father-inlaw that escalated the violence and hardened the sect? As a leader, did it ever occur to you that Nigeria owed an apology and compensation yo the sect before things got out of hand? If Yaradua had not died, are you not concerned that things might have been different? Are you aware that you are not as intelligent as you think you are? Are you aware that injustice when unrequited deepens the resolve of the oppressed and that the only way to resolve injustice is by restitution, apology and dialog? Are you aware that Buhari barking like a dog and working with idiots like you could only escalate the crisis? Are you aware that Terrorism is a Spiritual crisis and that it takes superior intellect to deal with such matters? Stop insulting other people. No one owes Nigeria any weapons. Those weapons that you import would have been produced by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria if it was not for the kleptomania of unpatriotic idiots in power like you. You robbed Nigeria of respect and dignity whenever you had the opportunity to serve. Please fade away for a while and let us endure the ineptitude of EFCC for letting people like you get away with your loot.

  38. Well spoken sir, but unfortunately some of our youths to my dismay actually supported leahy and even ridiculed those of us suggesting that nigeria goes through other countries to get weapons. Even if soldiers are abusing human rights which is wrong, what of the people that bokoharam are killing on a daily basis, rnt they humans? Give us the weapons and when we win the war, we can now punish people guilty of human rights abuse, nt tell us to start sanctioning soldiers when we are short of arms and in the middle of a battle with terrorism.
I still stand by what I said earlier, buhari is a huge joker as he went to US despite seeing what they did to Jonathan. You already know it's gay laws they want u to accept, if you wnt accept it, why expect any help from them. There are other countries that we can get weapons from, it's nt like we are fighting 2nd world war, we dnt need rockets, just basic up to date weapons to vanquish these people, but nooo...colonial mentality carried you back to America. And because of it, leahy abi whatever he calls himself had the temerity to insult our soldiers, cos all American soldiers are now saints. Let's watch and see how America will aid us, and prolly northerners wil keep dying before our president grows some sens

  43. Well said FFK! The fact is that the said anti army propaganda was sold to the US/Amnesty International by APC. It was part of their propaganda against Jonathan and PDP. Unfortunately, it has now come back to bite them in the bottom. Karma. APC in their deadly propaganda war thought they were dealing with Jonathan- truth is that it has affected Nigeria and every one of us.

  45. I made a comment earlier on the issue in which I agreed with sen. Leahy. I was wrong. I Agree Totally WITH FFK. The US has showed it clear that they are nigeria enemy. Since Obama came to power. He didn't deem it fit to visit nigeria, one of the most important country in Africa. That will show the disregard the US govt have for us. If they won't supply us arms to fight Boko haram based on the fallacy that we have human rights issues to answer, why then are they selling arms to all these rogue nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and others that have worse human rights record than us. The fact is that the US and Britain have deceived us for so long pretending to be our friend but what they are really concerned about is our oil wealth. If Buhari likes, let him not defend the good name of the nigeria military and allow one RACIST foreigner to denigrate it. Let buhari wait for FFK to do his job for him. FFK, I know some group of people hate you so much but majority of Nigerians want you to speak truth to power. I believe you are amongst some the brightest brains we have in this country. 60. A friend in need, is a friend indeed. Perhaps, the Russians & Chinese would consider selling Naija the necessary ammunitions to fight BH, in order, to end the senseless bloodshed. Ever since, the CIA's prediction about Naija's 2015 disintegration came to null, it seems the Leahy Law is another way to muzzle the govt with a view to expediting their purpoted conclusions: the other, is to view this as a population control mechanism. Since the Bill & Melinda Gates Fdn., Population Council & similar orgs recommended population control for Naija, it's fallen on deaf ears; every time one turns around, Naija is growing in leaps & bounds despite the extenuating factors in the economy and now, the census stands at about 160 million; well, if the domestic/internal leadership is a dismal failure at forecasting, the international community is not. So, in their books and by hook or crook, this "undesirable" teeming population will be terminated and disintegrated bcos it is a threat on many levels; couple this scenario with the fact, PMB and Naija's leadership still makes the Western world, its first port of call, on matters of national security & development. Should anyone be surprised about this outcome? For Naija leaders to keep feigning surprise @ this stage, given historical antecedents, is: goodcause4trouble

  70. The US Army is the greatest perpetrator of war crimes, murder and mass rape in recent history. Documented cases include
    1. Over 10,000 women from Okinawa ,Japan rounded up and raped by American marines
    2. 1,360 rapes during the first 10 days of American occupation of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan
    3. The Canicatti massacre in which American soldiers killed Italian civilians
    4. The Biscari massacre where the American 45th infantry division killed 75 prisoners of war
    5. The Nogun Ri Massacre in which the American 7th calvary regiment killed 363 women, children and elderly men in South Korea
    6. The famous My Lai Massacre of 504 civilians (women and Children) in South Vietnam
This is just the tip of a huge iceberg, not to talk of Afghanistan, Abu Graib and Guantanamo and the illegal renditions and drone murders that take place on a regular basis nowadays.
Well I hope PMB and his advisers have learned a valuable lesson and understand where Nigeria lies in the eyes of America. The damage done to Nigeria's military by our Nadeco warriors when Abacha needed to be demonized still shapes the worldview of the American state department junior analysts who have now risen to become responsible for policy . Expect no sympathy from them. They believe Nigeria will serve their interest better if we divide. Instead turn your eyes to the east and get over this ‘west is best’ colonial mentality.

Sir but you refused to add that the U.S. Department of police has been proved over and over to be guilty of all the accusations he made against Nigerian Army plus racism. God bless you Sir. I hope the new govt will shine their eyes. Americans are simply jealous of us because they know Nigeria's potential and sure we will achieve anything we put our minds to. Let's say that they are scared and always intimidated by Nigeria. That goes my sadness about this country; with good governance and honesty with heart of servitude in our minds, we can outdo the Americans and our economy will be great. Lord help us.

But they will fall and China and Russia shall rise to conquer them. But the truth be said they were fed with lies by the APC then cos of politics and now thousands have died and it's their turn now to rule but the pit they dug is consuming them too. Now innocent Nigerians are dying everyday in thousands, under their watch, it is not always proper to propagate sentiments on matters that affects every one, regardless of who is in power or where he comes from. Our collective unity should always be seen above our partisans, religious, tribal and ethnic cleavages.

  108. Take it or leave it, FFK always make sense, but Fani I beg to differ in this one. Since many Nigerians failed to come together and fight Boko Haram during GEJ term thinking its GEJ and PDP problem. I don't think we will come together now. They won on the ground of flushing out Boko Haram so they have to do it, and fast as well. When GEJ was pleading with USA and other Western countries to help with supplying of arms, they said he is weakling and insulting Nigerians. Then GEJ decided to buy arms through black market from South Africa, they screwed it saying he is taking our money overseas. Now they are celebrating PMB for going cap in hand to USA in a more slavish manner for the same reason. But one thing they fail to know is that USA has never wiped out terrorism in any part of the World, and seeing Nigeria as a threat to some of her pervert ideologies can never help Nigeria out of her self-imposed problems. For believe it or not Boko Haram was a product of greed and selfish hegemonious desire.

  109. I normally don't respond to FFK's tweets n comments perhaps because of its so many half truths and outright lies, but this one has some sense and substance.

As I read same, I pondered how the jury did not come out condemning Nigeria and seeking ways to place significant arms embargo on Nigeria after the Odi and Zaki-Ibiam Massacres.

I do not subscribe to the bestiality of a section of the Military, where they are found culpable in nefarious acts, what is however disdainful about the western powers' position is the loss of the sense of urgency in turning the tide against BH by actively suppressing our collective efforts with the purchase of the equipment needed. It is like starving American units that are out and about prosecuting a must win war the weaponry they need due to human right violations.

It should be enough that PMB had already given his commitment to look into the reports of human rights violations. One would have thought that this had provided comfort for lifting this embargo.

  112. A very well articulated piece.

I hope PMB reads this, as I'm tired of Nigeria playing second fiddle to the US - are they God? No they're not!

I believe that the US has a sinister plan for Nigeria. First, Obama (a black president) ignores visiting Nigeria when he visits the continent, then they say that the reason they won't sell us arms is because we're in violation of the Leahy Law (what a load of croc!) or what about all the propaganda they were spewing during our recent elections that we would be a failed state.

Naija move away from America and focus on other alternatives.

May God help us in our fight against Boko Haram! Amen!!!

  121. Dear FFK, it easy and cheap to talk as well as cry foul or victim. The failure of GEJ's administration to investigate and bring to justice those corrupt military commanders under whose orders or watch gross human right abuses and strategy sabotage were perpetrated by the Nigerian military brought us into this seeming weapons blockade. Let's call a spade what it is. This is the second time in our national history Nigeria will be placed under such embargo - The first was during the civil war 1967 -1970, for the same reason. It's obvious we need to review the way our military work.
We can only be on a right stand to accuse the US of non assistance militarily, when our government has entirely addressed the report tabled by Amnesty International, else throwing tantrums and crying foul or victim will not change anything.

I think this here is the bitter truth, although in all fairness America would always be pushed to be on the side of a reputable international organisation such as Amnesty International and pay cognizance to their reports. However, I feel PMB should look into investigating these reports so this issue can be resolved asap!

  137. I said before Buhari left to the US that they are going to meet a senate with a republican majority and that will be a natural deadlock. Some body on this blog bashed me but can you see what is happening now.The government should go with some baptist and pentacostal bishops like Adebayo, Mike Okonkwo etc and also some females to the US congress to plead and they will see the
difference. Most of the congress men who a Republican are from the bible belt areas In the US. Bringing the women to the table will bring about more empathy. All you have to do is "think like them" since we reallt do not have more to offer the US strategically

Infact the Russians might even have better made weapons than the USA because they breathe, eat and smell weapon manufacturing.

And for the half-wits that wanna respond and ask why GEJ didn't crush them and how PMB is still trying to fix things, please know that PMB is not a child and if he didn't think about all the time he would have required to clean office before tackling BH, when he was making empty promises, then he should have kept his mouth shut. 149. Nigeria need to understand that the basics of int's relations is selfishness. If you ain't bringing nada on the table there's nothing for you. Even the big boys that have figured it all out aren't ready to baby-sit nobody with no strings attached. You'v got your independence, let your foreign policies reflect your interest and your attraction. Nigeria's relations with the west lately has all been coated with interests alone. Now that's a fracture of symbiosis. Even the so-called East got what they hope to gain from us, which may be more likely to be more than what we hope to get from them on the long run. The devil you know could be better than the angel you don't know. #Nijalookinwards...

    ReplyDelete
  150. Pls spare me the speech. You do not go to the US to ask for something military ammunitions without strings attached. If you want something from then you do things their way. First of all:
    1) I am sure that we have Nigerians that have affiliations with members of the US congress eg tue congressional Black Caucus. Why don't you use does people to lobby the congress.
    2) They would have gone with women and children that are victims of BokoHaram (eg the child that had been severely burnt that Linda showed on her blog site last week). Even give the woman a speech to make before the congress to appeal to their sympathy. You have to learn how the white man reasons. You don't go with just a former military dictator like Buhari.
    3) (This one is a bit far fetched but might work for an Oyibo). Send a Nigerian lady to befriend this Leahy guy and start dropping ideas of selling weapons to Nigerians. That is how slavery ended in the US after all. With Thomas Jefferson and his mistress.

why should America sell weapons to Nigeria, when our security forces are specilaist in brutalising the masses.
I can categorically tell you that the Nigerian security forces combined kill far more innocent people than BH.
America to sell arms to a country that awarded billion dollar contracts to Militants to protect oil pipeline and ports, I wonder if Nigeirans will acceot it if Buhari gave contracts worth billions to BH for national security. BH we know is a terrorist group, what do we call the indiciplined imbeciles and murderers we call security forces. Right now Nigerians are caught beween a rock and a hard place. Death by BH, robbers, or Police and armed forces.

When we start demonstrating that we are competent to handle our affiars maybe the Western world will take us serious.
How often do we read about stories of police or soldiers killing innocent people. On LIB alone today we have read of 3 deaths that are attributed to the police and this happens on a daily basis. FFK, I beg to differ.

1, If Nigerians are to be respected by any other nation, we should learn to put our differences aside, party affiliations and work together as one to achieve good for ourselves as a nation. Enough of this blame game and witch hunt.

2, At this point I think those in Govt. should decide for good governance. enough of this greedy looting.

Nigeria has all the resources to be envied by all other nations but our inability to settle down and organise ourselves and put all the resources at our disposal to achieve greatness is a big problem for us.

I guess that the US has a glimpse of the greatness of this nation hence the opposition from them.
