Ex-police chiefs disagree over Buhari’s security following incident at Eid praying ground

Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Adebayo Adeoye, has called for the immediate restoration of the Department of State Services personnel to the Presidential Villa to provide close protection for President Buhari.

The former DIG says the use of soldiers as presidential guards could expose Buhari to danger and jeopardize his life.

Last week Friday, the president recounted his experience at the Eid praying ground where he was almost mobbed by youths who were excited to see him. He said the security around him was so lose that anyone with bad intentions could have harmed him but he managed to escape from the crowd.

The people guarding the president were soldiers. Adeoye stated that the incident at the Eid praying ground showed that the soldiers guarding the President did not have the right experience and skills, and that day, they exposed him to danger by their lack of crowd control skills, adding that the DSS operatives would have protected Buhari better.
"DSS operatives should be called back to the Villa quickly. They should not endanger the life of the President. Anyone advising the President to use soldiers for his protection didn’t mean well, the President’s life was in danger at the Eid praying ground; he was almost mobbed by the crowd and I hope such a thing would not repeat itself.
“The DSS operatives should be allowed to protect the President; soldiers are not trained on crowd control or close protection.”
But a former FCT Commissioner of Police, Lawrence Alobi, said that soldiers in mufti could be used as part of the outer layer of presidential security, while the DSS should rather be used for intelligence-gathering.

  17. Good point. It is the responsibility of the DSS to protect the president ànd other top political office holders and not the soldiers.I get it Buhari puts more trust on his khaki boys but the right people should be left to do their job

  29. I wonder why the DSS would be stopped from doing the job that they ve been empowered to do by law. It s just like pulling the US secret service away from protecting the US president. Crazy! These guys have been trained in close protection of VIPs. Thats their job. We need to let institutions work accordingly in this country

  32. Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA) whose Abuja residence was occupied for 24 hours by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), says he does not deserve the treatment being meted out to him by the APC-led government. He said his actions as NSA led to the party’s victory in the 2015 general election. Describing what transpired during the siege on his house, the retired colonel said the current administration is not according him the right that he deserves. “I was fair to all as NSA. Even when I had security cause to act on some issues, inflammatory comments and actions against the government of the day by those in the opposition, I exercised restraint. I did not restrict anyone’s movement, I never asked security agents to occupy anybody’s house,” he said. “I gave my best for this transition, which led to the victory of the opposition over the ruling party. But that is the new change we have, this is our own definition of democracy. All I know is that everything has a beginning and an end in a democracy. “The SSS operatives came in two trucks with a search warrant from a magistrate court. The warrant gave them the power to search for ‘illegal weapons and any incriminating item.’ You can imagine what that is supposed to mean. “I left office on Tuesday and they got the warrant on Wednesday and executed it by 6pm on Thursday. “From 6pm on Thursday, throughout the night till about 6am this morning (Friday), they were searching my house looking for incriminating items. “They restricted my movement. I cannot go out and no one can visit me. All those who attempted to see me were stopped from doing so. “In fact, my son was blocked from entering my residence. My two cooks, who used to come from their homes to prepare my meals, were also disallowed from leaving my house.
