Benue State University student dies after he's withdrawn from medical school after spending 10yrs

His name is Idoko Nicholas Inalegwu and he was a medical student of Benue State University, Makurdi. He died recently in an unexplained accident. His friends think he committed suicide because he had fallen into heavy depression after receiving news of his withdrawal from medical school after spending 10 years.

According to Benue.com, after the student died, medical students of the school took his coffin and deposited it at the office of the vice chancellor in protest, blaming the school's action for his death. See the photos after the cut...

Idoko was withdrawn for failing a haphazardly organised resit exam that has bedevilled medical students in the institution over the years.

Speaking under anonymity in a telephone conversation, one of the students said they believe that Idoko took his own life because he couldn’t bear the news that his 10 years in medical was in vain.
“He had been talking about it, that he wish he died a painless death. The school have finished him. There is no where in the world that a medical student is withdrawn after spending 10 years.” He said.
Coffin at the VC's office
According to Benue.com, the students had complained about the manner in which exams were conducted, where resit exams were prolonged for up to one whole year as against the stipulated six weeks, with no efforts to engage the students.

After spending 12 years without graduation, that many of the students in the medical school have become disillusioned,  frustrated, depressed and some have attempted suicide due to the stagnation and irregularities but the school management was continuously adamant about the psychological effects of their long stay in medical school.

The students, after an altercation at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, obtained the coffin of their dead colleague, marched to the VC’s office, vowing not to leave until their grievances which bother around the haphazard conduct of exams, manipulation of results, withdrawals and accreditation, are resolved.

The students this morning, blocked the Gboko-Makurdi Highway causing a congestion of traffic. They also burned tyres, carrying placards demanding that their Vice Chancellor address them. They accused the VC and provost of paying a deaf ear to the predicaments of the medical students in the school over the years.

God is not going to come down and help us. The entire educational sector needs to be revamped. This is getting out of hand. The government have decided to steal and just do nothing else. 31. It's a pity... this unfortunate situation is real in our Nigerian universities. But early years in school should start informing our kids that they can also be many things other than Doctors pls.
I couldn't get Medicine in UNN after trying 3 times it was either UNN or nothing, it affected me till I got admission to read Veterinary which I did succesfully,i also went on to do a 2nd degree in another university to read Economics now I work in a financial organization. I shared dis short story so pple will know dat if Medicine is now working change course and move on!

  33. I'm sorry but the real problem is the young man. When you see a path failing, please try something else!! 10 years would have been enough to do another 4 year course in another school, 2 year masters, 1 year service, 3 year working experience. Please my dear BVS, Once something isnt working, try something else. Recently, people have been killing themselves because, "nobody appreciates me" "no one notices me" "no one patronise me" "no one loves me" please love yourself! Try something else

  41. When two sad incidences follow each other, negative assumptions are common place (especially when the victim is deceased as confirmations become impossible)... I've not been able to verify his withdrawal and i can't argue that he wasn't depressed at the time. what i can say with total conviction is that he wasn't suicidal in anyway. ID has other plans for his life and had even contemplated an exit from the medical school at some point but i and some other of his friends had encouraged him to stay back. part of the reason he even wanted to come over to Abuja with me on thursday morning was cos of a business project he was starting in Abuja.

  61. I DONT BLAME THE SCHOOL AUTHORITIES FOR WITHDRAWING HIM FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL SHA BECAUSE IF YOU ARE NOT A GOOD MEDICAL DOCTOR, YOU CAN ENDANGER PEOPLE'S LIVES IN FUTURE. NO SENTIMENTS ATTACHED. IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE LET'S JUST MANAGE AND PASS HIM. IF IT IS OTHER COURSES, IT IS OK BUT NOT COURSES THAT RELATE TO HEALTH AND HUMAN LIVES. FOR EXAMPLE, IF IT IS POLITICAL SCIENCE OR ECONOMICS IT IS OK BECAUSE HE CAN STILL LEARN MORE ABOUT POLITICS AND ECONOMICS ON HIS OWN AFTER GRADUATION BUT NOT MEDICAL SCIENCE

  91. Linda are you sure juju is not involved, that he will go to school and he will not graduate. Reminds me of my days in lagos, there was a lady studying for her final paper for the 4th time. On the day of the exam - an invigilator from another department stormed into the class and accused this lady of cheating - The invigilators in the class were stunned, because they knew it was a lie.... Students were also stunned..... Linda she was not cheating at all..... But that was the last time she came to school she was withdrawn after spending 4 years on a course studing for a National Diploma which only takes 2 years.
