Prosecutors drops murder charges against Kano child-bride

The murder charges against 15-year-old Wasila Tasi'u, the child bride who poisoned and killed her 35-year-old husband, Umar Sani, and four others, was dropped by prosecutors at a high court in Kano today Wednesday May 20th.

Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki, a Prosecutor in the case filed against her, asked the presiding judge at the High Court in Gezawa, Kano state, to 'terminate the case of culpable homicide against Wasila Tasi’u'. "With a heavy heart, I apply that the accused be discharged.” he said

Legal sources in Kano said the court had been under serious pressure from human rights groups and the international community to drop the case since she had been married against her will at age 14.

Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty for Wasila.

    So for killing 5 men she gets no punishment . the world craves gender equality but everytime a stand is to be taken against a female the people expect leniency. she is a minor who was forced into marriage agreed but child marriages and arranged marriages are common practices in the north .. If right or wrong is another thing but down there its not wrong ... That she killed her husband and four other people to escape her marriage and gets to go free only gives room and encouragement to other girls and even those in unhappy marriages .. The punishment she should have been given I have no idea but definitely not just discharged without facing consequences for 5 murders ... "My Opinion"

But this little girl killed 5 people though. Does this mean killing is better than child bride? Or killing should be an exit in a child bride situation? we need clensing in Nigeria.

    I hear people say she should av run away and I marvel. Imagine yourself at age 14. Did you have any mind of your own at that age. If you had a family who pushed you out to live with Sm other against your will, and running was your only option, where would you run to? Back to the same family? Plssss it does not make any sense to say she would have run away.

    I am happy she's been released. She is still. A child and it is going to be a bit difficult, but I guess she should be given back her childhood.

    A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Educate this girl child and others like her and watch the North do well in myriads of ways. It is against human rights to force a minor or anyone into a marriage contract. This case and others like it is proof enough. Set the girl child free.
