'Sexually distracting’ dress lands schoolgirl in detention- but she hits back, telling boys to learn 'self control'

17 year old Lauren Wiggins was criticized by her school bosses and put in detention for wearing a 'sexually distracting' halter neck dress (pictured right) to school. Lauren later hit back at teachers at her her school, New Brunswick school in Canada in an emotional letter she posted on Facebook saying that their attitudes are supporting discrimination against women and encouraging the objectification of women. Below is what she wrote;
"Today I received a detention because the outfit I am wearing is considered inappropriate and a sexual distraction to the young men in my school. Enough is enough. I’m tired of the unjust standards that we as women are held up to.
If you are truly so concerned that a boy in this school will get distracted by my upper back and shoulders, then he needs to be sent home and practice self-control.
I’m tired of the discrimination against our bodies, and I’m absolutely fed up with comments that make us feel like we can’t be comfortable without being provocative
In today’s society, a woman’s body is constantly discriminated against and hypersexualized to the point where we can no longer wear the clothing that we feel comfortable in without the accusation and/or assumption that we are being provocative.
Schools are the social building blocks in an adolescent’s life, meant to teach them how to communicate and develop relationships with others and also learning about themselves and who they want to be.It’s preached upon us to be individual, to be ourselves.
The double standard here is that when we try, we are then told we’re wrong. If you are truly so concerned that a boy in this school will get distracted by my upper back and shoulders then he needs to be sent home and practice self control.

    8. She has a GREAT POINT. Anytime I try to wear something short out of the house, my folks complain and it annoys me. Because my sole purpose for wearing such short things is for comfort and because of the heat. Period! Nothing more. But no one seems to gt that. Men will look at me this way and that etc etc. how's that my problem. They can look but can't touch

  11. Very well said.People like Linda have multiple standards and apply them, depending on who they are in support of.

If its ok for boys to be in skinny, crotch hugging pants, then it should be ok for girls to be in micro mini skirts.

Its called putting your hormones under lock and key or at the worst DIY.

  44. You go girl! I'm sick of society making it a woman's fault when a man becomes sexually arroused by her presence. That's just like someone saying "she deserved to be raped because she was naked". Ok, then you might as well have raped your mother when you saw her half naked, or your sister when you mistakenly stumbled into her room while she was changing. Enough of that, and learn to control your sexual urges.

  47. I totes agree. Society's standards today completely objectify a woman. A woman can't do this but a man can do this. Please. Women must come together and unite against this prejudice that has existed for years. The female form is beautiful and should be admired, not sexualised. Men need to be taught self control because whether a woman rocks a hijab or a bikini, a mans thoughts will run to the places they want to.

Boys Should learn self control i agree !

But it is very easy to say so because you are not a man. Men think differently from the way you see things . Men and women are wired differently. A man is easily moved by sight which is different from a woman who is rather moved by her emotions (show of care, sweet words etc).

When a man tells you that your dressing is not ok for him (provocative), please try and understand. The way you see it is not the way he sees it. You could as well be comfortable in covered up clothes. Men do cover up.

Men get excited when little is revealed and much is expected. When men control themselves like you expect them to while you walk around naked, they get use to your nakedness and the turn gay . lol

  68. While she is correct that men need to have self control, she seems ignorant that she is a child, surrounded by other children, all with hormones raging. That's the 2nd reason why there is a dress code in schools for growing children. The 1st reason is so as to instill a sense of decency and responsibility. If she wants to wear sphagetti straps or even those deeply plunging necklines favored by Hollywood today, heck, even if she wants to go around in a bikini, she should wait till she is out of the school, and then she can argue with her bosses at work when she starts working. Having said that, the dress is not indecent, but then I'm not a teenage boy with raging hormones and an undeveloped sense of consequences and responsibility.

    ReplyDelete
  69. First of all I think that dress is not sexually distracting and the boys truly need to get a grip. Secondly though I think the world has gotten so full of itself in this women empowerment stuff that some women act anyhow and hide behind it. Dressing provocatively and not expecting to be harassed, is like parking your car in a bad neighborhood and with your keys in the ignition and expecting it not to be stolen. Responsibility lies with both male and female to act right

    ReplyDelete
  70. I am sure that school has a dresscode

  71. it is true that guys should be taught self control, but should the same institution that preach self control also expose same guys to temptation?
