Pics: Pandemonium at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja right now

There's serious fight happening at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja this night after Aero Contractors canceled a flight from Abuja to Lagos after a 3-hour delay. The flight was slated for 6pm this evening, but Aero contractors canceled it at 9:05pm. Immediately passengers heard the news, they mobbed airline staff, destroyed their printers and other properties. Aero staff, including luggage attendants ran for their dear lives.

Passengers say they are now stranded at the airport...that the airline didn't put them in a hotel or even give them a refund. Above is a photo from the scene. And that's blood. See more photos after the cut

  48. Nigerian airlines need to step up! How long did they think passengers would take their unprofessionalism

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sad.

People have resorted to this action out of frustration.

Airlines, in Nigeria, take passengers for granted, delaying and cancelling flights without regard for the inconvenience caused to their customers and with no consequence.

If the aviation regulators impose sanctions and have the airlines pay compensation for each delay and cancellation, customers will see something being done and appreciate it.

Be warned - we are seeing passengers storming runways, stopping flights from taking off and now this!

It is time the regulators impose ICAO regulations on compensation here as they affect passenger rights.

Unfortunately, some person in power will rather protect the airlines for a pot of porridge and say the passengers have broken the law then seek to catch and deal with a few soft passengers.

Lets address the problem from the source. Chidoka and his successor should address this.

  105. R all of u aware that their is aviation fuel scarcity, and aero remained d only airline that wus given supply by marketers right from day 1, d strike started, Arik could not get supplies because they owe oil marketers so much no marketer wus willing to give them.D marketers finally ran out of Aviation fuel yesterday cause of Aero's increased frequency within 2 days of Arik not flying.Haba u guys should consider d situation @ d moment, yes they delay, reschedule but it's because they remain d only airline day adhere to on d spot safety audit, I pity all of u,u all don't know what Air safety is all about, Arik,Dana,Medview and First Nation all r political airlines, run by politicians who meddle with safety there by putting all passengers at risk.D Dana crash is a clear example I know how many times this airlines fly u all in d sky with a faulty engine all because they want to convey u all to ur destinations, Aero will never do that with my years of experience in dis sector they have never being faulted safety wise.We should also know that Aviation is not African and can never b like dat of d west for as long as it is being run by blacks. Get a white man to run dis sector and u will c change.Linda get ur facts right from May 3 I bet u Nigerian airspace will b shut down owing no more Jet A 1 fuel. Instead u all to go vent ur anger on d govt who put us in dis mess, it's Aero u all r putting ur anger on, I pity u all.Dat place u want to go on time and go and die it's in an aero aircraft that will happen.Nigerians should learn to be considerate and act in line with d current situation @ hand there is currently a scarcity which will persist, trust mi.U all want hotels and refunds pls tell the govt to revamp d aviation sector. There wus a Stella Oduah d only Minister of Aviation to ever deliver in dis is sector, my fellow egoistic men felt threatened, Isa Yuguda and Ahmed Gulag there by making sure she wus set up and showed d way just like other meaningful Nigerians in Jonathans administration that where all willing to work. She wus going to deliver dis sector to Nigerians brand new again, Linda u and many other men in d news, political circle, blogsite and co shouted her down with out any proper investigation, d bullet proof cars we know who made d arrangement but she has being vindicated, she won her Senate ticket. Nigerians we have a long way to go we don't cherish what is good, we destroy it and we will continue to suffer for dis.It will interest u dat amongst d passengers stranded r top shots who had d privileged to mingle with people in power there by influence them to change dis sector longtime ago but rather than do dat they go for their own personal interest, una never c anything, it's going to b 26 days of he'll before Jonathan hands over

  110. The airlines take you for granted because the same government that takes you for granted 'allow' them to take you for granted.

  111. Aero Contractor is always in the habit of flight cancellation.

  112. Arik did the same in PH yesterday, cancelled all flights and blamed this on aviation fuel shortage.
But the grammatical expression though, I bow.

  113. Aunty linda, this is mma2 in lagos and not abuja airport... dee

  114. My aero flight for 10:45 today to Abuja has also being cancelled via a text message. They say it's due to aviation fuel scarcity. It's really annoying.

  115. Serves them right. I dunno what Aero is turning too. I had similar experience early January from lagos to Abuja. My flight was for 2:45pm, only for me to get to d airport and was told it has been shifted to 4pm... to think that I got to d airport on time got me even more angry. I snapped back about y they didn't even send a mssg. fast forward to 4pm, no announcement. Until much later that d flight has been shifted to 6pm again!!!!!! Finally, I boarded around 8:45pm. Upon boarding, person don take over my seat, Shuo!!!!!! In fact plane was filled up. The attendant after much said, gave me a seat in d first class section. Thank God the flight was a smooth one. Aero no dey try again abeg!!!!!

  116. It really is a shame to see this kind of attack on airline personnel. I quite empathize with the customers who are made to endure this suffering, but some of these delays/cancellation just go on to show the state of the nation. No body planned the fuel marketers strike. airlines are made to face the brunt. The major issue i have with the airlines is their very poor communication, and their poor show of sympathy to these passengers. This i consider disrespectfulto the passengers, but this beating of seemingly innocent staff does not solve the problems. Once in a while, we are made to interface with angry customers in our different places of work. If all irate customers charge at staff, imagine what the state of workers will be. Finally Airlines in Nigeria should step up their game and present more quality$

  119. To those who have made stupid comments on how wrong it was for the passengers to have reacted that way are just bunch of Fools. If you were there, then you would have known better. I was one of the passengers whose flight was eventually cancelled. I was to board Arik flight from Calabar to Abuja but they cancelled their flights from may 1st even sent sms to all passengers due to aviation fuel scarcity. We decided to buy Aero from Calabar to Lagos to take the next Abuja flight from lagos. Aero still collected cash knowing fully well they had insufficient fuel. First a flight of 4:20 to Abuja, Aero still sold ticket to people at 7pm. They began to announce 30mins delay over 5times then eventually cancelled the 3 flights that was meant to leave for Abuja at about 9:30pm. So tell me, who is to be blamed? They cancelled flights without any contingency plan, I am heavily pregnant, people had kids with them and don't even know anyone in lagos to help with accommodation. Aero contractor manager was called on the phone severally but never picked or returned the call. So why then blame passengers for their actions???? This can't happen in other countries and the airline won't make proper arrangement for the passengers. Is it the passengers fault that they purchased your flight ticket not knowing the airline did not have sufficient fuel??? All their planes from other states were just landing in lagos... Only porthacourt flight left last night because Asari Dokubo was on that flight. All airlines in Nigeria needs to be sanctioned for extorting people and not making adequate plans

  120. To think the guy that owns aero contractor contested for a senatorial post against Adeola Yayi but lost to him, if hes so disorganised and takes his customers for granted means he wuld have done worse if he won the election...well good thing he lost

  123. They should burst their heads if possible, fucking airlines are becoming uncontrollable, postponing flights with not so much as an apology.

  126. No amount of delay would warrant the type of beastly behaviour you have narrated. In other climes the hoodlums would have been rounded up and charged for vandalism and causing grievous body harm and the airline would have been sanctioned for its poor service delivery. Can two wrongs ever make it right? What a shame.

  127. chanchanwaJust so you all know, no aero staff was beating up, the blood spill you saw was from the passenger while trying to break the glass door open as aero staff were reluctant and non nonchalant about all questions directed at them on what next. I saw it happen from beginning till i left about 12am still no update from aero. no aero staff was beaten up at all, they were only held back in their office to respond to passengers enquiry as they were trying to run off. we still had passengers who were even protecting them just to get an answer. unfortunately the so called manager of aero was no where to be found leaving the staff to be faced with all the drama.

Till this very moment, no aero flight has left lagos for abuja today except benin and Enugu.

you don't blame customers for been angry as they are paying for a service. people should stop been unnecessarily sentimental then get themselves blinded to the pain people are feeling. even if there is no aviation fuel, why not stop selling tickets, clear the back log you have on ground first and be customer service excellence. No customer should be blamed for reacting where a service provider fails no matter what the situation is even if it is beyond the control of the service provider, that is where the skills of customer service and people management should come into play by the service provider. obviously, if they had even addressed people on the next move, everybody would have just been calm but getting the silent treatment was wrong. This goes for all airlines not just aero and arik.

  128. Just to correct a notion, Aeroland has nothing to do with Aerocontractors. I know that there is no excuse fit to take away blames from these airlines, but been an insider and a flyer, i see a bit from both ends. Normally, you get fuel on arrival basis. you may have word from your marketer assuring you of 80000kg of fuel, but at the last minute he tells you that for whatever reason, he cannot. Aero had done over 40 flights with this marketer supplying even in all difficulties. How would you doubt their words suddenly. Its really complex I can tell you. All the same, it is a wake up call for airline operators, and the entire aviation ministry to properly look into airline operations. A lot is wrong. Their operations can definitely be bettered, but trust me, not by this form of violence.$

  131. See, whether or not they destroyed things, the plane would not have moved. BUT there is satisfaction in teaching them a minor lesson. A lesson for another day. Fear of being beaten may make them sit up just a little bit. This nonsense has gone on for far too long with nothing done about it.
