This is what we get when u don't pay ur tax and other government levies. Some don't even renew their vehicle and property documents every year. In Opobo-Nigeria we have some adage that "U did not go to school, but u want to speak 'Because'". Also "U do not have white collar job, but u want to drink tea." U do not pay ur taxes, but u want ur police station to look like Oyibo police station.
Looks like a burnt, deserted building that isn't even good enough for a refuse dump. Only in naija......and we expect policemen to stay off the streets , who would want to hang around in dis shed?
The senators passing cigarettes smoking bill will not see things like these! If people want to smoke they smoke. If they die they'll be buried after all the federal ministry of health have warned that smokers are liable to die young, not as if there are free medical care in Nigeria
We have to have a debate about how Igbo men raise their children, there's a saying "If you don't train your child at home, they'll be trained in the streets or become a menace to society".
We are constantly bombarded with stories of Young Igbo men committing the most heinous of atrocities, with no regard, sometimes of consequence.
For many years now, I can admit I have had a mistrust and almost discriminatory attitude to my Igbo cousins (because we are after all neighbors and share a country). But, in recent months, I have had to chastise myself and make amends of my attitude. For this, I would as a Yoruba man, like to apologize if I have caused offence or stoaked up racial mistrust along with others. A house can not stand divided.
Back to the topic at hand. Igbo men need to refocus their priorities. Igbo women give birth to wonderful children that need as much love, care and discipline as can be afforded them. It is not an obligation, it is a responsibility. These children born to you are not spare parts, child labourers in waiting or just merely heirs, they are the legacy you leave behind, they are the ones to build our nation and our immediate communities.
If you instil values in them if not just hard work and masculinity or bravado, but of compassion, respect and love for self and others, they will grow with such values and be champions of your name.
There is nothing wrong with showing your child love, male or female. There is nothing wrong with being the respect and dignity bearers that you want them emulate. You do not have to be angry in front of your children, because this was how you were brought up.
I grew up around Igbo people who were tenants of my parents, where in our house discipline involved my parents telling me to face the wall and put my hands up, and then my mum telling everyone what I did wrong and dad eventually spanking me with a belt, to then dismissing me, and later asking me if I learnt my lesson... With a pocket money reward if I acquiesced....the Igbos neighbors house, when the children misbehaved fell into mayhem, till mama chukwu had to run off with the kids to protect her children and herself, until Papa chukwu developed a drinking problem and soon suffered from kidney failure due to a breakdown he suffered that he used alcohol to remedy.
Clearly the children will be affected by this. The father's discipline could be perceived as passive aggression, probably based around feelings of inadequacy which probably stem from his need to provide for his children financially, but negligence in providing for their emotional needs. This didn't make him a bad person, if anything the igbo father can be a source of great security financially for their family, but what value is money when your children lack basic empathy because you were not at home, and then when you come home you are misplaced in your anger towards them.
Igbo men, please do some soul checking. It is not alright for your children, male to grow up angry and unloved, it becomes a vicious cycle. If you win, the whole of Nigeria wins together.
In the spirit of brotherly love, this is a public service announcement of truth, speaking to the Igbos, the rest of Nigeria needs to have this conversation and intervention, we judge you and it is shallow, the depth of the core issues is more complicated than just assuming lack of awareness in one's foibles, it is our national responsibility to build eachother up and not to leave a single child behind our unloved.
The Hausas will be next once we have a dialogue with the Igbos.
