In the letter, she criticized the President for refusing to grant her son and others clemency despite pleas from everyone. Read the letter after the cut...
Dear Mr President,
Leader of Indonesia and father of three children, My name is Raji Sukumaran, and my son, Myuran Sukumaran, was executed in the early hours of Wednesday 29 April 2015 under your instructions. As I make the preparations to bury my beautiful son, I thought I would share my feelings with you. I thought I would share how my son was reformed, was full of life, love and passion, and who so desperately wanted to live his life in service to help others. I have made this letter open in the hope that it may help other people or their families, in some way as they sit and wait for you to order their deaths. I would really like to think that you would be able to understand, if you don't, then feel free to share this letter with your wife, who I think would understand, one mother to another.
My son doesn't want another mother, father, sister or brother to go through what we went through. For no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or friends should have to deal with what we've had to deal with. I am not sure where you were as the men you ordered to kill my son, and seven others pulled the trigger but I am sure you were far away. My son died knowing all his loved ones were close by waiting in a hotel room to hear the news that he had been executed.
My son did commit a serious crime but he also apologised to your country and your people many times. In the last 10 years while you kept him in prison, he chose to do all within his power to make up for his crime. It wasn?t easy, I am not sure anyone will ever realise how hard good man in prison, to be a positive role model for other younger prisoners, Indonesian prisoners.
Myu spent many years rehabilitating so many prisoners, he hoped that he could help as many people as possible, to give them a chance to leave prison to go out in the world a little better than they came inside. Myu helped prisoners who struggled with drug use and many other issues. My son never asked for his rehabilitation to be enough to free him from prison, all he asked was that he not be killed. Was it too much for you to let him live the remainder of his life in prison? I have heard that many others around you took the time to read and learn of the works of my son, and of Andrew and of the people they helped.
Many of whom are now helping other people themselves. I cannot believe that all of his works could not even get you to even read the paper you were signing. I remember when you were elected as President of Indonesia, my son was celebrating. My son told me that 'Our new President is a man of the people, a person that would support education, rehabilitation and people bettering themselves' and that you would look into everything he had done in the prison. I guess he was wrong.
As human being, I can?t even understand how you could sign a person?s death without looking into their personal circumstances. If you do not read what you are signing how can you know whether the life you are taking belongs to someone who is mentally unwellwheelchair, or young mother with two children, or a father of two, or a man who has been in your prison for 17 years, or a gospel singer, or two young boys who made foolish mistakes.
My son only hoped to live in prison for the remainder of his life so that he could be able to continue his good work, which has become known around the world. All he wanted was to be given a chance to do that. I as a mother was punished for 10 years as well for his crime, and I will be punished for the rest of my life now because you took his lifesend my son home. I just asked you not to order his death but instead you ignored me and many others. I asked to meet you, to speak to you but once again you could not even have the courage to face our requests to communicate with you. I will not have the chance to see him get married, have children. Mr President, do you think that your punishment towards my son after he had spent 10 years in gaol reformed and helping others and then executing him is fair and just? Do you as a leader feel that everyone who faces justice in Indonesia is treated fairly and equally? Do you believe that Indonesia has a justice system that doesn?t make mistakes? Do you not hear or read all the stories about corruption in criminal cases? I think this is something very important - you have told the thousands and thousands of people in prisons across your country, that no matter how hard you work, no matter how much you change your life, no matter what your personal circumstances are - you will not receive mercy. You ask them to not try, as I have never heard of anyone in prison around the world doing the works my son has done - it was still not enough for you to read his clemency application. I hope your wife would understand what myself and Andrew Chan's mother are going through. I felt so helpless as I watched my son walk away, healthy and full of life. I watched as over the last four months you tortured him by making jokes about his life, making him guess the night he would be taken, openly discussing the way in which he would die, parading and humiliating our family. We made funeral plans for our sons while they were still alive.
This was because we were told you the President had not changed your mind, and that you had ordered the executions to be carried out, despite the world wide outcry to let our sons live. I want to ask you to put your family in my situation. Only days before I saw a video in which you said that you did not want Indonesians to be killed overseas. I know as I write this letter, the death of our children will not make any difference to drug trade in Indonesia. I am sure you know this, and that your reasons for taking these 8 lives had nothing to do with preventing drugs and everything to do with your politics.
I hope that your children, your grandchildren, your nephews and nieces never make a mistake. I also want you to remember when your child falls in love, gets married, makes plans for the future, that Andrew Chan also fell in love, made plans for his future and was executed. How would it feel if this was your son? I was told as my son said his last words, one of the last things he did was say a prayer for Indonesia. My son sought forgiveness for your country and the men taking his life, as he knew you did not know what you were doing. This was the man you ordered to die. I am not sure whether I could ever forgive you, I hope that I have that much grace and compassion in my heart one day. But I am sure this pain in my heart will stay with me for the rest of my life, and it hurts so much.
Think for a second, one of your children is tied to post, and men are lined up in front of them and the fear he would have felt, and then your child is shot through the heart. My son was young and foolish, he did not deserve to suffer like this. My son will be missed by so many people who love him and so many people are ?nding it dif?cult to come to terms with what has happened.
As I finish this letter I pray for the many other men and women whose lives are in your hands, especially those on death row. I pray that you will have the courage to look beyond the politics for they too have families who love them despite their mistakes.

DeleteAbiamo, I wish dey can change 4rm killing 2 life imprisonment
DeleteVery touching. The pain and agony the woman must be going through is better imagined. But it hurts me the more to know that despite all this, they are more people willing to carry drugs into indonesia. Its a shame and a pity.

ReplyDeleteBishop or wateva u cal ursef in dis country u live in people kill & stil walk d strt. Death sentence is d worse. Verdict dt can b delivered to anyone. ReplyDeleteDamn! She did make a point.
ReplyDeleteI still don't understand why they would execute them after 10yrs. Ten years is enough time to grow up, mature or even turn a new leaf. As long as it wasn't murder or something of the like, I support this woman
Exactly!
DeleteHow about families grieving d death of their own children 4m doin drugs supplied by dis ppl?? D gospel truth is its a great loss 4 evrybdy. Some of d victims from doin drugs r mayb stil alive bt in plain terms dead! U really nid to get a detailed info on wt drugs has dne to Indonesia. U cnt blame anybdy. It bcame mor or less a plague!!
DeleteMy dear i was wondeing too. People die fom these drugs. Besides it is clearly stated on theie visa and at their airporr that drugs equal death. Abi they didnt read??? Im not saying its right to kill them but they too have killed many with their drugs. Besides if they were not caught they would still be doing it.

ReplyDeleteThis is extremely touching letter...I share in all her sentiments...However, however, however!!! Madam, don't put all the blame of your son's death on the Indonesian president...He strictly followed the position of the law, he is not God...He might have been merciful on some other issues, but several factors could have influenced his obstinacy towards this. If you were the president of Indonesia, under the very circumstances, do you think you would have granted clemency to the prisoners??? Oh dear, don't be in a hurry to say you would! It could have been much more difficult for you to free them because of the very circumstances in which the President found himself. By the way, women such as you who often express emotional sentiments when their children fall victims of their own vices should be reminded that they often, i repeat, often have the opportunity to correct these children when they start deviating but they don't. Sometimes, the teachers or house maid, or relative may be a little harsher in dealing with these kids, but the mothers come up to their defence. Well, a day is coming, such as it has come for your son and other felons, when the long arm of the law will not be twisted to spare them...Pls, rather than blame the Indonesian president for doing what circumstances might have led him to do, pls focus your energy and commitment to teaching and correcting your children, grandchildren, relatives or mere acquaintances about the dangers of drugs and other social vices. Thank you. May the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace.
ReplyDeleteSegun,no matter what, no life should be taken.will you say you have never don anything wrong in your life time against the law? Does it mean your parents didn't train you well? Look beyond your reasoning. People make mistakes for several reasons n pray never to in such situations. Their killing is highly condemned n wrong. It's wrong to justify it.
DeleteVery Well Said
DeleteHow many times did the bible say that we should we forgive a man when he sins? Seventy times seven times. There is no man without sin.
DeleteJst pry never to bi such situations or ur loved once.is easy to advice plp. But hrd to do same thing on our own.
DeleteShe never said the son shld be released. She only pleaded that the judgement should have been changed to life imprisonment.
DeleteShe never said the son shld be released. She only pleaded that the judgement should have been changed to life imprisonment.
DeleteI appreciate and respect ur perspectives my dear friends. However, the law is an ass! It's law speaking here and not grace! No country operates under grace, that's why I said the president is not God and never can be! Sometimes, u just have to apply the full weight of the law...about 30 people or thereabout in Indonesia die of drugs each day it is reported. If care is not taken, the entire country will be wiped out in time. Sometimes, we pity armed robbers when they are caught and convicted...sometimes they cry when they are paraded before the press and blame the devil, but have u ever seen them operate? Nobody deserves to live while they carry out their terrible activities. May God have mercy upon us all. We need the law to help our society. Grace is the prerogative of the Almighty God
DeleteI don't even understand what the debate is about. It's written boldly at their airport that punishment for drug trafficking is death. Think of those families loosing loved ones on a daily basis 'cos of addiction to drugs. And do you know that over 90 Nigerians still wanted to traffic drugs after thhe execution. Abeg leave the matter no story there.
Deletedrug addicts ruin thier own lives by choice and they do it in a gradual process. they knew the risk, yet dipped into thier pockets, offered money, took d drugs and did whatever to thier bodies with it - over and over again.
DeleteAn addict will always find a fix when hes looking out for it ... no amount of executions will stop that!
many users dont get themselves cracked up and sick from drug usage. some ppl just lack self discipline n control...follow the code, stay away from drug use or use it recreationally! RIP
10yrs Is enough time to turn a new leaf. the punishment far outweighs his crime. No one has the right to take a life. yes there are exceptions, this isn't one.
I pray never to be in this situation but its the law of the country. Why didnt he traffick to a country without the death penalty??? Is the govt to give clemency to everyone? Madam i feel ur pain but its clearly stated at their airport.
DeleteI really feel ur pain,so touching,d president is really heartless, taking dere lives won't reduce d crime at indonesian,I pray dat my God gives her d strength to bear d loss..

ReplyDeleteThis is so heartbreaking to read. My heart bleed for this mother who truly, truly loved her son. She didn't ask that he be set free. All she wanted was for her son to live even if it meant life in prion. She just wynted him to live. May Myu's soul and the souls of others executed that day rest in peace, amen.
ReplyDeleteReally touching, after 10yrs imprisonment wat else did dey want, what did dey gain in killing dem???may God forgives us all.......leumas-mahni
ReplyDeleteThey knew the law and deliberately refused to follow it.

ReplyDeleteLook at d blood suckers behind him smiling! Only God can take one's life. U v no right to take it cos u cnt even create an ant talk more of a human. I doubt if u'll ever have peace after this Mr president... they even begged u to gv them life imprisonment, but no, u refused! let God be the judge.
ReplyDeleteI feel ur pain ma
ReplyDeletePain of a mother.so touching...may God comfrt you.
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Raji,
ReplyDeleteYou have laid your heart out in this open letter and it is soo unimaginable the pains you could be going through now. i am also happy you had the strength of God and the courage to do that despite how bereaved you are for the benefit of the others awaiting execution in indonesia. One thing is always certain, you either die as a martyr or a villain and your son (who i have never heard of or his works till his time for execution) died being loved by many, asking for forgiveness as narrated by you in this letter and also rehabilitating himself and others for 10 years in the gaol which is most important. Human beings condemn but God will never condemn.
The scriptures make me believe that dieing through one that can only kill your body is better than having one(God) who will kill both body nd soul.
I just request via this open letter to take care of yourself and family in this sad time as God has taken care of the rest.
As touching as this letter was I kinda felt that justice was served. Then again hearing about all the good work Myu and Chan did in prison, the least the President could have one was let them spend the remainder of their lives in jail!! They had already spent more than a decade what is a couple more?!
ReplyDeleteSo heartbreaking!
ReplyDeleteIt's quite touching indeed but it's rather too late. If only the guy had been groomed properly from childbirth till the time he was arrested with drugs in Indonesia. A lot of Nigerians wanna become so rich over night having seen the beautiful cars driven by our artists, not knowing only hard work, prayer and perseverance make riches. What do they do? get involve in drug trafficking!!! Drug kills and destroy lives. Have you for once thought about how the family of those whose children have been killed due to the drugs imported to Indonesia by your son, feels or go through?! Its a loss-loss situation. In an interview granted to Amanpour by the Indonesian President, he said 18,000 citizens are lost yearly to drug related issues!! Please think about the family of those 18,000 people. So if you think you cant forgive him for taking away your son, then maybe God won't forgive you for not training your son properly and allowing him participate in the destruction of 18,000 lives annually. Say No To Drug Trafficking
ReplyDeleteDo they force the drugs on them??? Answer me! Holier than thou souls!
DeleteUr comment is quite shallow. That her son resorted to drug trafficking doesn't mean she didn't train him well. Some parents train their children well and yet they still derail. The woman only asked for the judgement to be changed to life imprisonment. Again, on the pple that got wasted cos of drug abuse, how come u r not blaming their parents? Were they forced to buy the drugs or they chose to start abusing the drugs themselves?
DeletePpl really don't think before they talk.
Deleteheartbreaking
ReplyDeleteThis is touching and I can't hold back my tears
ReplyDeleteSo touching and painful.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that madam and R.I.P to your son, if you go to another man's land you MUST obey their laws.
ReplyDeleteI watched an interview between a news house and the Indonesian president, just before those men where executed. He said that the drug situation in Indonesia is not a small one. If you pick 10 people off the streets of Indonesia, at least 5 of them are addicts. Members of whole families sometimes are all addicts. That is a very serious situation. Maybe they have tried everything to curtail these drug traffickers and the situation isn't different. It must be a serious situation for him to choose the death penalty. Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said for every 5 metres you walk on the streets of Indonesia, you meet a sign telling u boldly that drug traffickers who are caught will be executed. Even with all this info, people still try everyday to lift drugs into their nation. Much as I agree with the woman that her son had been reformed and shouldn't have got the death penalty after all those years in prison, I also feel that her son was old enough to know right from wrong. Greed for money can never be justified. I have a cousin who is a drug addict. He has been one since his teen years and is still an addict even at age 29. He refuses to go to school and is a nuisance to every single person around him. Only one addict in the family and it's such an unpalatable experience. You need to live with one to understand why the president is so pained. Imagine if it was at least, 6 or 7 of us that were addicts. Omo, na die o. The Indonesian president killed traffickers but those drugs kill people too. Besides, I don't know of anywhere in the world where they put a death sentence on someone and execute them immediately. They will always serve time in prison for years, in order to allow evidence that might prove their innocence to surface. I feel for his mother but every country has a law and we must all respect the law.
ReplyDeleteSensible response. Most reasonable.
DeleteSo in this case it took Indonesia Government 10yrs to find evidence that might prove innocence?
DeleteYes, they erred by going against the law of a country BUT they have paid for it. Killing them wasn't necessary at all.
I feel for the families concerned.
@redcandy ur head is valid jare!
Deletepains of an anguished parent
ReplyDeleteVery touching I feel her pain...
ReplyDeleteSo touchin, may God comfort u
ReplyDeletethe guy was in prison for 10 years before his execution?
ReplyDeleteVery Painful. Take heart madam
ReplyDeleteTeaers and pains is what I feel my clotges was sucked in tears before I even finished the write ups hmmmmm God where are though???JC
ReplyDeleteThis is really very touching, however the president also has his reasons for going ahead with the execution, I watched it Live on Aljazeera.

ReplyDeleteHEARTLESS........ FUCK INDONESIA, FUCK THE PRESIDENT.
ReplyDeleteThese people sef. It is on their visa the penalty for carrying drugs and your son went ahead to commit the crime pls i no its painful but just deal with it and use the platform to educate other youth against carrying drugs into these countries. My condolences
ReplyDeleteTouching!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIn as much as I abhor and detest those who do drugs, no man's life is worth taking no matter what. No man created life not even the president of Indonesia, so he should not take one. The best he could have done was life sentence. I feel the woman's pain.
ReplyDeleteThis is so touching
ReplyDeleteThe recipient of this letter won't even read it and even if he by chance do read it, he won't feel ur pain bcos the devil has stollen his heart and replaced it with ice in his veins.
ReplyDeleteMy heart still aches. so sad! May their souls rest in peace. All he asked for was to live out his life in jail. The guy did a whole lot for the prison. very painful situation. He had the power to grant clemency. Several years from now, when he isn't president any longer I hope he can look back and see what grave injustice he did, and to think Heather Mack got 10 years??
ReplyDeleteDo you know how many people his son indirectly have killed or destroyed homes because of the drugs he sold? Imagine the mums of the drug addicts. If he wasn't caught, he might still be out there destroying homes with drugs. However imprisonment is better than death penalty.
ReplyDeleteDon't blame d deceased for d fault of his patrons, they have d freewill to either buy or not buy his merchandise.
DeleteGod bless u
DeleteEpic response. Thanks sugar!
Delete@Segun na because no be your pickin na him make you get mouth dey talk. Dont you know that there are bad children of good parents? Do you know if she used to beat him and yet he was hardened? He only became soft after he entered prison and rehabilitation centre. So stop judging her for spoiling her son. Were you there when she was taking care of her son? Do you know whether she was harsher than the house helps? The bible says dont judge so that you may not be judged. I dont blame you because you are a man. Go and carry a child for 9 months in your stomach and understand the pain and agony of a woman losing he child. No matter how bad the child is, it must pain you. There are some children that are hardened no matter how hard you train them. They just choose to be bad boys in school. So pls sympathise with the woman instead of blaming and judging her unecessary. Nobody is above mistakes. The child has made a mistake and has changed and regrets. It might even be a curse on the child or a spiritual problem. Pray that your child never have spiritual problem. If God has forgiven someone, who are you to take the person's life? God is the owner of live. He gives and He takes. British and American government understand this that's why they have removed death penalty from their law. I think other countries should stop it. It means you dont respect God that created human beings. You have no right to destroy what God has created
ReplyDeleteSome states in America still have death penalty. To those saying the president is heartless, what about us Nigerians that carry out jungle justice on ppl who we suspect have committed a crime? If you haven't have to make such decisions as he is don't judge him too. We should just be thankful he was reformed before he died. The bible never said you won't face the repercussions of your actions just that you'll be forgiven for them. Just hope we never have to be in either party's positions
DeleteSeems u don't even know what drug is all about. BTW, America still has the death penalty in their laws
DeleteDon't mind the idiot
DeleteEyah, it is well ma.
ReplyDeleteThe many agonies of the Death Penalty. Is this really to be encouraged for an offence such as Drug trafficking? World Legislators better lay a bearing on this issue o.
ReplyDeleteSo touching. Executing dem won't stop d act so y end someone's life? No human has d right to tke d life of anoda human. D blood of those pple are on him
ReplyDeleteCutting the head wont cure the head ache, killing them has not killed the habit
ReplyDeleteWell said y'all
ReplyDeleteMy heart bleeds for this woman, seriously... She made a lot of sense.. The only kind of people who don't deserve to live are people who commit murder.. I hope the Indonesian president learns from this
ReplyDeleteBishop Dammy no doubt doing the right thing and living the right way is good but no man has the right to take another man's life, no matter the offense. Even Christ forgave those who nailed Him to the cross. This letter is so heart breaking, I pray that God consoles the families of the departed. May their souls rest in peace. I'm glad they accepted Christ before they were executed.
ReplyDeleteSo touching but the penalty for drug trafficking is written on their VISA and everywhere around their country, i think where there's no law there's no crime!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel her anguish. As a mother, the death of her son will forever linger in her heart. The law is the law and can be changed. The death penalty is just too harsh for a drug trafficker.
ReplyDeleteImagine if God behaved the way these people did. We would all be dead by now. God tells us to be merciful, just as he is merciful to us. Imagine if the punishment for our sins was the death sentence. How many of us would be alive by now?
ReplyDeleteThat law is inhumane and ungodly and needs to be amended. Perhaps for something like murder or child molestation, you can give the death sentence. But for just selling drugs, that sentence is too extreme.
This is heart rending
ReplyDeleteVery touching, but at the end if the day the Indonesian govt is only doing what it feels best to eradicate drug trafficking.
ReplyDeleteOh.......................I don't even know what to say, nobody is above the law and the law must take its course but then.......................Life should be valued
ReplyDeleteGod ... if it's ok by you let that man live but if it's not ok by you let justice be done. May thire souls rest in peace Amen.
ReplyDeleteHe won't flinch at all
ReplyDeleteA big calamity will fall on Indonesia very soon there will be lost of lives nd properties. Mark my work
ReplyDeleteBishop or whatever u call urself. U are a MAD DOG and deserve pom on d head
ReplyDeleteSo painful
ReplyDeleteWHAT ABOUT the pain of losing a child to drugs? The child may become stoned, psychotic, may die etc. I won't bother to read. I don't want to be touched.
ReplyDeleteDid they beg any child to take drugs? If u lose a child to drugs, that is d child's choice. Death penalty is different. It is a babaric law. It should be abolished. Life sentence is better. Leave God that created u to take life himself.
ReplyDeletePeople here just argue blindly. If u dont know the bible very well, then keep quiet. You have forgotten that one of the commandments of God in the bible is "thou shalt not kill". If u respect God, you wont put killing as part of your laws as a law maker. For those talking about repercation, is 10 years in prison not enough repercaution?? At least he changed in prison and gave his life to christ because he realised his mistake. Anyways, my joy is that he made heaven unlike some of us here that will not even make heaven.
ReplyDeleteDont mind the senseless fool that is calling someone an idiot. He is even a worse sinner. Stupid goat!
ReplyDeleteU have no right to take another man's life that God created. Change your babaric laws. There other strict laws that u can apply. I can confirm that the some European countries and UK government has stopped death penalty and some places in the US. Why do u think they did not kill Mutallab that attempted to bomb a plane in US. UK introduced christianity to Nigeria and they stopped because the bible says so. Period!
ReplyDeleteThat is the law of their land. Period !
ReplyDeleteI still strongly believe excustion isn't the answer... Ma'am, weep no more n be happy for your son knows Jesus before his death...
ReplyDeleteIt is well
ReplyDelete#tearza#
@Redcandy has said all the things i want to say and i read somwhere in the comments by someone that @ only people who murder deserve to be executed@.. ma/sir the worst kind of murder is the one of drugd. it kills you while alive so tbh i believe they were not alien to the rules in indonesia before committing such. RIP regardless but dont blame the president on your sons choice.
ReplyDeleteThis is so touching, but it is also a lesson to our youths to say no to drugs and quick money. May the soul of the young man rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteVery touching, but has she considered the number of people who die DAILY from the use of this product her son was peddling?, the money he made from doing that bis was spent on her, where there is no law, there is no sin, if the son has broken the law of a land by his acts, he should pay for his sins, at least he made his peace with his maker. Her son did what he had to do and that country did what they had to do.
ReplyDeleteThe law of the land is not right because God said "Thou shall not kill". Lets respect God our maker. He did not make u for another person to take your life. If he had life in prison sentence, it is as good as death sentence because u have lived a wasted life as well. Lets be objective while respecting God our maker and stop being steriotype and myopic in our reasoning. Nobody is saying they should not obey the laws of the land. All we are saying is adjust the laws of the land to respect God that gives life and that has warned us not to kill our fellow human being.
ReplyDeleteNobody forced those that use the product to use it. It is a matter of choice. So dont blame those that sell it. If u decide to buy something that u know is bad for your health, its your choice. Its like you saying they should kill people that produce and sell cigarette. It is boldly written on cigarrette packets that smokers are liable to die young yet you choose to buy the cigarrette that can kill you and destroy your lungs over time. Why didnt they put death sentences in countries that sell cigarrete because it also leads to death as well. It is your choice to buy cigarrette and die young and it is also your choice to buy cocaine and die young. So dont blame it on the sellers. You have a choice not to buy.
ReplyDeleteMy only joy here is that he made heaven unlike some people here that are quick to condem him and judge him. Some of those condeming him here might not even smell heaven because of their sins.
