Photo: Oba of Lagos meets Ohaneze Ndigbo leaders

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu met with the leaders of Ohaneze Ndigbo group led by Chief Ralph Obioha, chairman of the Caretaker Committee, to resolve issues bordering on the threat he made to the Igbos resident in Lagos concerning tomorrow's governorship election and his demand that they vote for his chosen candidate, APC's Akinwunmi Ambode, or be ready to swim in the lagoon...:-)
According to The Sun, the Oba said people were just making a mountain out of a molehill. He explained that he had no hard feelings towards the Igbos in his kingdom, adding that majority of them who are traders use his shops at Isale Eko. He pleaded that the Igbos should just respect his feelings as he sees Ambode as a son who he wants to see in power. The Oba who had to break his siesta to meet the Igbo leaders said everything would be settled after Saturday's election.
On their part, the Igbo leaders promised they would not hold any grudge or animosity against the Oba.

Other Igbo leaders at the meeting included Chief Onwuka Ukwa (Ebonyi State); Chief Haruna Ajah (Ebonyi State); Chief Ignatius Okamene (Imo State) and Chief Mrs. Pat Udoye (Ebugu State).

    4. This Oba is too arrogant/over confident. We re not in stone age. Swallow ur pride (it does not contain fat) and make/issue proper apology. Can't believe this man was once an IGP. He should be smarter than all these. Unless he's indirectly rooting for Jimi who's actually his relative

The land belongs to the Yoruba and we have accommodated all tribes including Yoruba. We love you all as you have joined to the success of our land but please know that democratically that you are a Lagosian and entitled to equality but traditionally you are not entitled. Know your stand and shut the fuck up already

If Ezes say that they are ok with what he said in private, then who are you to question titled men? After all, the Oba made that statement in a PRIVATE meeting, so he can apologise privately. The fact that the earlier "threat" was secretly recorded is not his fault.

No one is above making a mistakes. so also should no one should be too big to apologize. Stop being bossy Mr. Oga. Obama. Mstcheeeeeew!!!

  64. Those people are not Igbo leaders and are on their own. Igbos are peculiar and blessed people. No threat against their lives will prosper. People should vote for their preferred candidate. This is democracy.

  65. We're over this issue! I'm sure people will go out tomorrow to vote for their candidate. I just hope the aftermath of the elections won't be bloody if Ambode loses. Nigeria didn't divide after the presidential elections and it definitely won't do so because of the Lagos gubernatorial elections.
We shouldn't allow ourselves to be used by politicians. I think Lagos may benefit more from the Federal government if an APC winner emerges. But then again, that's my opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions.

  76. A lawyer, Atueyi Chukwudi Felix, has revealed why he and other Igbo people who were at the palace of Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, laughed and clapped when he threatened and cursed Igbo if they did not vote for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode.
Felix said Akiolu was only joking and speaking with them as friends, adding that friends were always free with one another.
He alleged that the person who did the video the event and made it public had a political motive.
The motive, he said, was to curry favour for the Peoples Democratic Party.
Felix noted that he felt it was expedient for him to speak up before things get out of hand.
He said: “I strongly suspect that all this is being portrayed in this manner simply to curry votes for the Saturday’s coming election, which is already at hand.”
He stated that the ongoing saga might compel some people, who had hitherto been indifferent to their civic duty, to go out of anger and vote against the Oba’s advice, just to dare him.
He said: “What the Oba said was fully and simply directed to only the Igbos present at the meeting who His Majesty considered to be very close to him and should understand him well enough.
“When one talks to his very close friends, he tends to be very free with them.
“He was being very free with those present at the meeting and wanted us to realize how serious and close he takes us and our votes because he could not imagine us giving him our words only to turn back and do the very opposite.”
Felix stressed that Akiolu did not force them to the meeting.
According to him: “We were the ones that went to him on solidarity visit, so it would be very evil of us to only go and deceive him there.
“He only jokingly warned the people present at the meeting who he considered his own people.”
The lawyer argued that if close attention was paid to the video, which went viral, Nigerians would discover that there was no specific point he referred to ‘all the Igbos in Lagos.’
He said that it was because they were close friends to Akiolu and understood him quite well that those of them present at the occasion applauded and laughed at the end of his speech.
“We were expected to thereafter talk to our people in civilized manner to convince them and canvass for their votes if we truly believe we are capable of doing so,” said Felix. “The tradition of lagoon water threat was directed only to those present there at the meeting, jokingly as culture demands. Although he appeared serious, but we all understood it as a joke, that was why we all applauded him and made fun of it there.”
Felix said that he was shocked at the twist the play took after the video went viral, stressing that he suspected serious politics at play.
He said he wouldn’t know who recorded the speech and decided to play politics with it, but “it’s most unfair to his majesty to be portrayed in this manner.”

  90. The fact still remains that the Oba does not know his boundaries as a leader. As a traditional ruler, he does not have any rights to tell people who to vote or not vote period! Whether Ambode is his son or his father is immaterial! He has no rights to determine our franchise. Does he know that there are some Yorubas who are not going to vote ambode, he is so hateful and tribalistic no beating about the bush. The fire he is preparing will burn him soon. 97. I think the winner of tommorow election in Lagos is THE OBA OF LAGOS. I know u want to know why
After that comment he made , which I totally think is not cool at all, the PDP in their usual self took advantage of it and so doing now pitching the igbos against their host community. This now bring back the argument of who really own Lagos. So we lagosian see agba he as Igbo candidate ( he was at alaba yesterday telling the Igbo to push APC to lagoon with their PVC) and it's rally now that we av to really prove who really own Lagos and let them know Igbo cannot and will never dictate who rule our land for us

  100. I used to feel sad about the way the ibos were being marginalised in Nigeria, but now, I think the greatest problem the ibos have, are their leaders, and the ibos themselves.

first they went to visit the oba, who then rained curses on them and their children. They then went away to rant and rave on social media and in the press.
After all that, the oba did not call a press conference to publicly apologise, or organise a proper visit to try and atone, instead, the 'igbo leaders' arranged themselves like slaves to go back to meet him, to show their 'support, and lack of grudge holding' and the kind Oba was generous enough to 'interrupt his sleep' and talk to his 'not yet drowned' subjects, while issuing a veiled threat about owning the shops where tney earn their living. ?..
    what a shame. What nonsense..
can he try that rubbish with hausa leaders, and if by chance he did, would they run back to him like slaves to show unlimited support.
I have a lot more to say, but I think i'll stop here. I'm so annoyed and irritated by this crap.

I'm just disappointed with Igbo leaders ehh, they have acted foolishly how could they went to visit who promises you hell after 7days if his candidate didn't win, this absolutely disgrace to Igbo as a people, dose that mean if Igbo didn't trade here in Lagos there is no other place to trade? At Anambra we had the largest market in west Africa called (Onitsha Main Market)why not IBO's have rethink and went to their various places and start now to developed it,let Oba perish with his Lagos,a fool at 80's is a fool forever,IBO's beware of calamities ahead, the wise one has spoken

Can Igbo be complete without Anambra? that is why you should know that they are not representing anybody but keep fooling themselves with the yeye oba that doesn't understand the importance of the position he occupies. Once a police always a police. mtschew!

  111. He did NOT apologize. It is like you spit on my face and you tell me that I should not be annoyed that I should understand that my face deserved to be spit on. Those Igbo chiefs are cowards and do not represent the Igbos. Shameless old men.

I have noticed throughout this period that it is old men who we look up to that have been messing up. Such as the Orubebe fool and now this thug called Oba.

He shld have respected them in the first place.
it is a pity he won't apologise for being Oba. it is a free world and this is democracy. you cannot force ppl to do something. you can only persuade 'em

  120. Good morning Linda
Until our Government start addressing this kind of comments and start making every body pay for their own stupidity things like this will continue, this is one of the things that keep us away from our beloved Country called Nigeria, I really want to know why that Idiotic Oba is still not yet arrested, also the guy that think he is the spoke person for OPC, you Linda and all the LIB readers should not let this be swept under the carpet, that is the work of social media, this kind of statements is very bad no matter to whom it is addressed to, if not how the world do we claim one Nigeria,
Nigeria as a nation had lost and is still losing all the professional to western world, not because we don't like our Country and want to pay back to the Land we come from.
Comments like that of the Oba put shock down any body that is not from yoruba spine, Nigeria is this place good citizens are not allowed to own fire arms, what will anybody do when some idiot come to breakdown your prison yard bars in the middle of the night to ask you to go with them to be killed, you can't even defend yourself and your household, mean while all the idiots are armed with gun cutlass and the rest.
NIGERIA SHOULD WAKE UP AND HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE TO THERE IDIOTIC BENT BRAIN DEAD WAYS.

  125. If what Oba said is a joke as our learned lawyer Chukwudi A. Felix made us understand, then it is an expensive joke, and some one like Oba Akiolu who know the African tradition more than my very self; know very well what it meant to place a curse on some body, or group, and therefore should face whatever reactions and comments coming to him.

    ReplyDelete
  126. all of you saying Oba didn't apologize are just stupid. you want a whole king to take back his words right? can your igwe abi obi take back his words. you people respect tradition in your villages but when you come to lagos, u take it to be a no man's land where no tradition counts. even England as big as it is have tradition. to be a citizen, you have to swear your allegiance to the Queen. whatever she says, good or bad cannot be taken back. Oba made peace with your Indigbos and u are still waiting for him to prostrate and beg you people abi. eyin omo irankiran jatijati yi. if you are not pleased, abeg pack your things and go back to your villages.nonsense and rubbish.

  128. Whatever decision you make at the polling station tomorrow, DO NOT base it on revenge or anger. Vote for who you believe is the best candidate for the job else you would just be a pawn in a game for or against one party.

If the Oba promised them contracts, will they release the video and ask you and I to clap for the Oba? Why did they go to see him to pledge their support? Did they tell us to come and join them? As much as I was angered by his statements I have thought it through and I believe that whoever released that video is trying to USE US to achieve their selfish goal. Why did they not express displeasure there and then?

If it is true that the entourage were led by that man who with the help of his brother wrecked havoc in Anambra state then I cannot stand with them for they are not men of integrity. They cause commotion and use it for their own gain.

My people, be wise and think of how your decision will affect YOU and your family. If you think the APC candidate will make Lagos better for you, vote for him. If you think it's the PDP candidate, then vote for him.

  129. I have posted a comment earlier before reading this post and this is exactly what I'm saying.
People are so gullible and allowing the politicians to play upon their intelligence. The right thing is what Ohaneze Ndigbo has done. The statement could have as well being directed to any group in the southwest or Lagos or even to people among the Oba's Kinsmen who angered him. in such situation it is the group that will go to him to appeal and appease him to explain their action or inaction. That is the culture and tradition which non-indigene should identify with. Those making unguarded comments do not know what had transpired between the Oba and the Ezes before he made the threat to them and not to the Igbos.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Na siddon look I dey. Whichever way it goes tomorrow, Igbo's will still be the greatest loser. APC is already controlling Federal, Igbo indigene will hear it loud and clear in the next four years and more. One thing I am sure of is that in the next 20 years, an Igbo man cannot smell presidency.

When Jimi uses and dump you like a piece of trash that you are; he will embrace his brothers cos East,North or South home is the best.

If you like import all your illiterate brothers from Onitsha into Lagos tomorrow, APC will still control you for the next four years. Very ungrateful tribe, that is why Hausa's butcher you like chicken.

linda, omo Igbo in Lagos (Yoruba land), if you like don't post, at least you have read it.

    Igbo, awon omo irankiran.
