My immediate reaction was that 'but Dangote is doing well', and he replied that its not really through...the man's main strength in business is his political connection...it seems to be failing seriously now

  44. Obviously, the current devaluation of the Naira is the key factor. Aliko's networth for those who don't know consists of his holdings, assets, stock options etc and most of these things are valued in Naira e.g his holding in Dangote Plc is firstly valued in Naira as that is the official currency of the NSE, also, his holdings across Nigeria which forms the bedrock of his immense business empire are valued in naira. Therefore, as the exchange rate falls so also his dollar value.

    ReplyDelete
  45. with d a alarming dwindling naira value,
    its definitely bound 2 happen,
    hmm...

    ReplyDelete
  46. His shares in Dangote Cement is usually factored in his net worth. since the share price has fallen so badly, this is expected. Just watch out, in not too distant future, you'll read that Dangote doubled his net worth in 6 months once the stock market recovers

We have all lost 25% of our fortune, but for a poor man like myself the money I have lost is small, Dangote now has lost 250million for every 1billion he has

  65. Can u read at all, Linda? (And I am referring to the blog not you personally - for some of your readers judging the comments) He lost $7.8B out of $25B, is that half? The forbes article clearly says half of the losses are from Nigerian devaluation of naira - the economy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Linda, all these ppl u are calling billionaires are not billionaires. They at best millionaires. It's only when a person is a dollar denominated billionaire that you can refer to him/her as a billionaire. Now, in case of Dangote, his assets are denominated in Naira. So, if the naira goes down his assets will go down proportionately and the reverse is also true. They know what he is worth in naira all they have to do is divide his net worth by the new exchange rate and they will know his current net worth in dollars. That is how they know what is going on.

  72. Most of the people that talk out of ignorance need to be schooled like Buhari. What do you expect with the current fall in oil price and the current devaluation of the naira thereby affecting the exchange rate in the stock market. Please Nigeria is not the only country face with this economic crisis. People should pray for God's deliverance for the country instead of accusing the president for everything, a boy that got infected with HIV due to his refusal to abstain or play safe will blame GEJ for his misfortune. I believe most of you will stop commenting on national issues when somebody like Buhari who does not believe in freedom of speech becomes the president. Some of you will be imprisoned for saying the truth. My prayer is for God never to allow the wicked man his evil team win because Nigeria will face more crisis and corruption under APC, the party is made of desperate criminals.

  83. Element says; it can't be up to half, but he sure has lost a lot. The rise of the dollar against the Naira is one sure way since most of his assets are invested in Naira or other African currencies besides the worth of his wealth was valued in Naira and converted to the Dollar. . . this is just one reason.
