UK PM says Pope Francis is wrong to say people who mock Islam should 'expect a punch'

UK Prime Minster David Cameron doesn't approve of the comment Pope Francis made following the Charlie Hebdo massacre. Speaking about freedom of expression and its limit, the Pope said 'you cannot insult the faith of others and if you do, you can expect a punch'. Read here

But opposing what the Pope said, Cameron said freedom of speech is important in an open society;
'I think in a free society, there is a right to cause offence about someone's religion. I'm a Christian; if someone says something offensive about Jesus, I might find that offensive, but in a free society I don't have a right to wreak vengeance on them. We have to accept that newspapers, magazines, can publish things that are offensive to some, as long as it's within the law. That is what we should defend.'

    4. You're certainly getting it wrong. Pope is trying to say that if u disrespect someone's religion u are at d risk of a 'punch'. He didn't mean that getting a "punch" is d solution.

    5. Freedom of speech is when u make a less than smart remark abt d Obama girls and lose ur job.
Freedom of speech is when Jim Clancy makes a less than smart comment and loses his job of 34yrs with CNN.
Freedom of speech is when u repeatedly mock a religion (a violent one at that) and pay the price. Don't say less than smart things. We live in a world with sensitive pple.
And sm1 mocking Christianity is it right? Is it bcos christians love their enemies, u tk it for granted?

in his country if i mock gay or transgender people even as a journalist, the backlash will be serious, and i won't get away with it. they will not excuse it under 'freedom of expression'.

why then is it okay to wax satirical over something so obviously sensitive as religion? i'm not saying its right to kill because of it though. just that it looks like a whole lot of double standards to me.

there's enough material from politicians and people in government for the media to make fun of.

  76. Freedom of speech?!

    Is it still acceptable when:
-it causes your neighbor to be hurt?
-it causes your neighbor to be provoked to anger?
-it causes your neighbor to feel his beliefs are being scorned at and undermined?
-it causes your neighbor to feel his God and faith are being insulted?
    - it causes your neighbor to react in a way that bludgeons the hitherto peaceful harmony between you and him?
    - it causes your neighbor to be driven to the precipice of jettisoning the sympathy with Charlie Hebdo victims and joining sympathy with extremism?
-it causes your neighbor to actually spark off protests thereby causing more unrest and deaths as is currently going on in Pakistan and Niger?

I really don't think so and I agree with the Pope! As much as I sympathize with ‪#‎jesuischarlie‬ and condemn all forms of violence and religious extremism, on the flip side i also believe in the mutual respect of the other person's faith and beliefs.

In the light of this, Charlie Hebdo and every other people bent on insulting religions should be asked to exercise caution and respect as they exercise their freedom of speech and not to drive fragile peaceful coexistence into more bloodshed and anarchy. I believe the assassinated editors wherever they are would smile more on acts tailored to bring peace to the world than the opposite.
