According to the grandson, Pa Ekhator Onabor is the current Odionwere of former Ugbugo village, now Evbuohen N’Oba, near Ugo Niyekeorhionmwon, in Orhionmwon LGA of Edo State.
"He married a wife who had six children for him (2 men and 4 women), but died in the 80s. One of the female child (the first born) is late now some years ago and was of old age, as Pa Ekhator now has 5 surviving children.More of what the grandson wrote on Facebook below...
Although he never went to any former school, but worked with white men in the timber industry where they were used as tree (igedu) cutters with axe, and then prepare the logs for transportation through the sea via Sapale for industrial usage by the white men.
Although he was born and bred as a traditionalist, (I used to follow him to make sacrifices in the bush for the gods in my younger days) but today he is a professing Christian, who underwent water baptism some five years ago or thereabouts, after confessing JESUS as his LORD and personal saviour. Hallelujah!
He was never rich financially in all his rich but this never stopped him from ensuring that his children attend standard schools as it was known then, which led to his first son Mr. Johnson Ekhator, 3rd born to served and retired from Pamol Rubber Company, Sokponba, Edo State. His second son, Mr. Raphael Ekhator, (my father) 4th born served and retired from the services of Ministry of Education, Edo State Government as a Messenger.
To appreciate the longevity of Pa Ekhator Onabor, his last born is 61 years old this 2015.
BIRTH TIME:
According to Pa Ekhator Onabor, his mother told him that he was around 7 years old when Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was exiled to Calabar, during the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British in 1897. That means, Pa Ekhator was born around 1890 thereabout though no single document whatsoever is available to back this up.
LIFE OCCURRENCES:
He told us that he once fell from a palm tree and died when he went to harvest palm fruits (banga) for his uncle. The death story was as a result of what he witnessed during his unconscious state. Although no one was with him in this journey, but the evidence that followed when he finally regained consciousness by cutting down the palm tree to remove his ropes used in climbing up the tree because it was hanging up there proved that he was actually involved in that accident. He never broke a single joint in his body but when he cut down the tree, it fell across the road path to the farm. He cut it again to free the road for passage, went home and never told anybody about the development.
On the following day as he was going to the farm with his uncle, they came to the place and his uncle said “there was no rain yesterday, what felled this palm tree?” It was then he told his uncle that he was the one that cut down the palm tree. When he queried the reason, he then told him that he fell down yesterday from the tree and in order remove his ropes, he had to cut it down. He was that strong.
On getting to the farm, he said his uncle rubbed his body with fresh pepper in order to melt any frozen blood vessels that may result from the fall. So many years after, Pa Ekhator is still strong and alive. This is amazing.
Another occurrence in his life was in 1990 or so. I witnessed this very one.
The previous day, we made a sacrifice for a woman where we had killed a he goat. The following day being Even (native Sunday), he woke up early in the morning and then prepared for the village elders’ meeting, usually called by the Odionwere. He left for the meeting around 9 AM without eating. He came back towards the afternoon and after some time, he went to sleep. During the evening meal, when he was woken up to eat, he couldn’t wake up. Soon, a lot people had come around trying to wake him up to no avail, though he was breathing.
Native doctors were quickly brought in to make incantations whether he was still alive and stuff like that. He never woke up and he started battling for life. He was just dragging here and there on his mud bed and making some sounds gasping for life. This continued until around 4 AM the next morning, keeping the villagers awake and people proving one form of thing or the other to revive him. And when he finally regained consciousness, the first thing he asked was “what are people doing her?” He was told that they have been there since yesterday for him because he refused to wake up. He dismissed it, but when he wanted to move out of the room, he legs couldn’t take him. It was then he believed what people were telling him that he had died earlier. Hmm! Granpa is still alive ooh 25 years after.
And in October 1996, he was crowned the Odionwere of Ugbugo, now Evbuohen N’Oba in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, becoming one of the longest reign in that position which is 19 years on the throne now. May the name of the LORD be praised. Amen.
My grandfather no longer see due to his old age and the long time hunter he engaged in his earlier years in life, but his eyes are still open as if he still sees.
As old as he is, he still go out of his room to the backyard to defecate with the help of others.
His old age is really a blessing to us because it is a thing of joy to have a very old man as your grandparent, even though financial blessings are not there, but money can never buy nor give old age.
And so, when I visited him this December 2014, I was pleased to still hear his voice and meet him alive even though many are worried that he ought to have died by now. But can he kill himself because people want him to die? Live on Grandpa and enjoy the remaining days of your existence here on earth until you meet your saviour in glory if Jesus tarry.
The unforgettable lesson I learnt from my Grandfather even when I was not a Christian by then was the warning he gave us, when my father was accused of being a wizard. He said “My son, if lie is as sweet as salt and native chalk, don’t use it to rub your body.” This advice of my Grandfather has helped me over the years to be weary of lying. He ensured that allegation of wizard against my father was pursued to its logical conclusion until it was confirmed that my father was never a wizard through the traditional means of defining such things at the time.
LORD JESUS, should you tarry, grant us long life as seen in the life of my Grandfather to your own glory.
And grandpa, should you pass on to glory now, surely you've left an excellent life of longevity worthy of emulation. It is my prayer that you will make it to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Amen.
To GOD be all the glory.
Lugard Ekhator

ReplyDeleteLip sealed. Long live PA.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I think due to bad record keeping, they may not get the exact day the old man was born. Then the pic looks very weird and scary. The guy should have packaged the old man well mow. Not good enough tho.
ReplyDeleteHummm what can one say well we bless his age n life
DeleteShut up ur mouth joor. He is 125 yrs old and still looks dat way. I bet wen u are 70 u will know d definition of scary. If u feel there is a bad record keeping, go help them get d good one. What is even wrong with some of u? Smh
Delete@Otobrise,So you are among those who feel they must insult people to make a point. Everybody has a right to comment here. This is my comment so you have no right to use that your Ebola infested hands to type shut up to me. And in case you are not intelligent, people of his time usually don't keep good records. So it is very possible that his children over estimated his age. I have seen this in the course of my Job. And the man dose not look well. He looks unkempt. So don't look for unnecessary attention here pls.
DeleteOtobrise, Do you even know how old 125 years is? Think about it. Then you would use your brain b4 u write nonsense.
DeleteWow!!!
ReplyDeleteThank God for making history with Pa but this is the reason why the western world undermine everything about us #lindaikeji #ogeyemmanuel #munifgrpltd that man needs adequate social care. People around him should ensure they support him with personal care and daily living skills so that people would not see him as one who is mentally ill. That was exactly the picture I got until I read the piece. We have Nigerians in the UK who run social care companies and have staff strength of about 200 on their payrole. They should bring back these ventures and support in educating us. Love your father land Nigerians.
ReplyDeleteBless u

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather died at 115 from Uhonmora Edo state. Was very poor but his oldest son was able to get a job and trained his siblings. Today some are retired having worked in mobil, unilever as top management staff. My uncles and aunt working with NCAA, shlumberger off shore and top organisations. Poverty is no excuse to a bright future is we work hard. When he died it was celebration of life because he also gave his life to christ. At the moment, only the son who trained everyone is dead. My aunts and uncles are alive and some are getting close to 90. It is well

ReplyDeleteIt's not a claim, it's a REALITY. He is my grandfather whom I stayed with from birth till I became 21 when I left the village for the city in 1996.
ReplyDeleteBy the grace of God, he is still alive and anybody can go and see him to authenticate this information if doubt arises.
God bless you Odera Mbadiwe for sending the post to Linda, and God bless you Linda for sharing this to the world.
Thank you.
My grandfather was 130years. He died about 4 months ago. 1st of September 2014. But he never lost any part of he's body. Everything was intact before he die but the only problem he had was lost of memory due to old age,. My grandpa hails from ondo town. So its just grace not everyone will live to such age.
Deletewow! amazing!
ReplyDeleteNawa oooo! Pple dey beg to stay up to 100yrs!
ReplyDeletelong live
ReplyDeleteAnd young people are dying anyhow. 125yrs ok seen. Keep on living Sir, and grandson keep on bn happy u hear. Goodnight.
ReplyDeleteMehn the oldman looks it...the igwe of my villa is around 110, if not more than, cuz he celebrated his 105 years ago, and he is the eldest in our ancient kingdom. His children are super rich, all of them abroad and are grandparents too..I think this is possible..
ReplyDeleteSo he's 125 very good and notable but truth be told he looks like he's rejected by his family. He should be taken care of bout made to look so tattered #my thoughts
ReplyDeleteDid u hear that he is blind coupled with age? Common sense should tell you that he will be acting like a child now. The story also states that the family isn't fanancially bouyant, that should also tell u they are trying their possible best. He looks rejected to u but his grandson is celebrating him on social media. If you don't like the way he looks think of possible ways to reach out to him and God will reward u with the gift of long life. Learn to be humble, it will lead u to eternal life. Even Angelina Joli picked the children of nobodies from Africa, and she is giving them a better life today
DeleteWow
ReplyDeleteWow if dis was my pa or grandpa I take care of him so much for living up till now he can even eat on his own wow, I buy him clothes shoes health check and everything to make his life better before any bad thing might happen to him

ReplyDeleteYes, my grandfather is very old. But, he is being taken care of even though it is not the best that should be offer. However, I didn't post these pictures for sympathy as it was never planned for. I did only to speak about his old age of 125 years.
These pictures are natural and taken from his dark room using the camera's flash as the light. So, I have nothing to be ashamed of in posting the pictures of my grandfather even though he is not dressed in the best of clothes. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteYou do not assume age,you present a Proof of birth,Nigerians believe everything they are told, produce authenticated Proof of birth like its done the world over.
ReplyDeleteWooow!!
ReplyDeleteWow!! He's a strong man oh. I no wan reach this age sha
ReplyDeleteHei! Thank God for his life.
ReplyDeleteWow, cant believe you put this up Lugard thumbs up. Dont know you personnally but my dad ( Enofe) is a native of ugbugo and he knows ur grand dad and he visits him in his room when he goes to d village. i had to call him immediately i read this and he confirmed that ur grand dad is really these old. My grand mum died in 2006 at d age of 105 & according to my dad ur grandpa was way older than her. I guess old people suffering & still using natural herbs & drugs in the village live longer than these generations flaunting wealth at any given chance. Linda pls post my comment & lets celebrate our own. And they are alot more old people around these age.
