Buhari certificate: Those seeking to destroy BUhari may end up destroying the military, APC warns

The APC has reacted to the statement the military released today about Buhari's certificate.See below
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned that those who are bent on destroying its Presidential Candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on the basis of his certificates may end up destroying the country's military.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Sec. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party warned that the PDP and the Jonathan Administration are playing a dangerous game by trying to compromise the military in order to satisfy selfish political objectives, and urged the military, as a symbol of national unity, to beware of those who may be seeking to use it to achieve selfish and divise ends.

It said the statement credited to the Nigerian Army Director, Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Olajide Olaleye, at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, that the Army is not in possession of Gen. Buhari's certificates, is in direct conflict with what he said on Jan. 4th 2015 on the same issue.

''In an interview with the Punch on Jan. 4th 2015, Brig.-Gen. Olaleye said: 'Every serving and retired Army officer has at least a copy of his certficates and credentials kept in the Nigerian Army while that same serving and retired officer has copies of those same certificates and credentials'.

''Is Brig.-Gen. Olaleye now saying that he did not make that statement? If he did, what has happened between then and now to make him to recant? It will be interesting to know what has transpired between then and now,'' APC said.

But more worrisome, the party said, is the statement credited to Brig.-Gen. Olaleye that there was no evidence that the certificates of all those who joined the army in the early 1960s were verified by the selection board.

''Is he now saying that all those who were commissioned into the officer cadres in the 1960s did not have their certificates verified? Does this not confirm what we said that in trying to destroy Gen. Buhari, the PDP and the Jonathan Administration will end up destroying the army as an institution? Or is it only Gen. Buhari that was commissioned into the army in the 1960s,'' it said.

The party also quoted Gen. Buhari as saying in an affidavit on 24/11/2014 that ''All my academic qualifications documents as filled in my presidential form, President APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary Military Board as at the time of this affidavit.''

''Those who are behind the latest controversy should now tell Nigerians what happened to Gen. Buhari's certificates between the time of his affidavit and now,'' it said.
APC said in any case, even if the Army now says it does not have the  certificates of Gen. Buhari, he is still very qualified to run for the country's highest office, as stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The party quoted Section 131 (d) of the Constitution: ''A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent''

APC said the meaning and interpretation of ''School Certificate level or its equivalent can be found in the Constitution under part IV, Section 318. In that Section, a ''School Certificate or ot equivalent'' is defined quite succinctly thus:

(a) A Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent, Grade II Teacher's Certificate, the City and Guilds Certificate; or
(b) Education up to Secondary School Certificate Level; or
(c) Primary Six School Leaving Certificate or its equivalent.
The party said since Brig.-Gen. Olaleye has now confirmed that Gen. Buhari indeed applied to join the Army from form six, that the principal of the school he attended even attested to his suitability, and that the form he filled contained his Secondary School Certificate results, there is no scintilla of doubt about his qualification to run for president as stipulated by the Constitution.
''However, we know that the PDP and the Jonathan Administration have constituted themselves into a court of law and will like nothing more than the disqualification of our candidate so they will face no challenge in next month's election. This is wishful thinking,'' it said.

APC said the PDP and the Jonathan Administration should expend their energy on how to revive their floundering campaign instead of seeking the disqualification of its (APC) candidate.
On the contradictions in the statements credited to the Army spokesman, the party said: ''It is true that our once globally-respected military has now been made comatose by the PDP-led Federal Government, but we believe things have not reached the level where the same military will be engaging in actions that amount to self destruction, just to satisfy some political interests.
''We believe things have not reached a level where we, as a nation, will now be giving the impression that a man who rose to become a Major-General in the Nigerian Army does not have requisite qualifications?

''What really is happening in our country if some politicians have now decided to engage in an action that will amount to dragging the military into politics, dividing an institution that is a symbol of national unity, trivializing the service of those who fought to keep Nigeria one and ridiculing the same country it is supposed to be ruling?

''We have said it before and will like to repeat: Enough is enough about this distraction orchestrated by the PDP and the Jonathan Administration whose electioneering campaign for next month's polls has suffered a train wreck,'' the party said

  3. What is this loooong story from APC? Ah the story is getting long now. A simple flashing of the certificates is all that is needed and not Thai long story. The army spokesperson said they have in Buhari's file a letter from his principal recommending him and a form he filled. That is the document they have and not his certificate to show he graduated. This story too long.

  6. Please enough already! This is just story story? What is the difficulty in showing Buhari's certificate and let us all know the two candidates are constitutionally qualified. It is the height of irresponsibility to expect Nigerians not to ask questions over this certificate matter. We want a Nigeria where people obey and respect the law. Especially the two men wanting to be president.

That is you present your certificate, they keep a copy and you also keep copies as well, which is what every establishment do when employing people. But they did not categorically state that they have buhari's copies of cert. For buhari to have risen to a general, he should has tendered his cert to various organisations, so he should go look for a copy o. It won't be fair to say u want to fight corruption when u have been a beneficiary of a corrupt practice that saw you to the pick of your career. XxxbarbieXxx

APC has to diffuse this before it becomes a major storm. Show the certificate please.

  61. Why is this an issue! If Buhari has got his certificate let him display it publicly! Is that a big deal?! Is that too much to ask! If you're applying for a job, which of course he is doing for the office of the president, you don't ask your interviewers, in this case INEC, to go to where you worked before to collect it! That's absurd! Meanwhile who keeps original documents with his employers!? Let him go and get it and show the whole world let this drama end! If he is so sure that he has got it!

    ReplyDelete
  62. If u think that the Nigerian Military is lying against Buhari, then produce the credentials, how will a person of his calibre not have his own credentials. Election aside, it is emberassing that an ex-military personnel of your rank doesn't have his own credential. Bcos he was once in the military doesn't mean the Nigerian Military should lye on his behalf; he could have been admitted based on quota system which was the practice in northern Nigeria during his time. Stop making baseless accussations against our Military. Prove them wrong if u are right. vote @NO2Buhari

No democratic country can successfully run on one party system, we need change not because Buhari is perfect but because the issues plaguing Nigeria urgently need new set of insights. Nigerians are selfish, looking out only for their own, if not why will some people still insist in being in power while millions suffer cos of unemployment, insecurity amongst others. Pdp can not and will never bring anything new to the table, Oga jona,we need a need a good, sensitive leader not some clueless, money eating, selfish man. And to top it, Nigerians Pls stop being deceived about looking for a Christian leader, what we need now is a good, disciplined leader, to that I say sai Buhari. FYI fayose, stop playing God, can you even predict your own end talk less of someone else

  110. Come, is it an army certificate?
    Is it not WAEC?
Go and get the ctc from there or bring it forward?
What employer keeps the employee's certificate for 50 years? You never thought of getting it till now.

I'm neutral but APC should not push us to the wall.

The educated class who are still watching to know where to stand. This is beyond atrocious!

The military brigadier must have made such a statement the way a vice chancellor will say "all those graduating from my school surely got in with SSCE" it's a sweeping statement and general. But when you look into the records of some specific people, some didn't have credit in maths and English but got verified through the back door. This is the harsh reality of the country we are living in. Are we learners?

For a party who claims 2 be so upriight and law abiding. This shouldn't be an issue shrouded in grammar. Simply provide his certificate and quit the gimmicks.

I'm beginning to see this party as one full of sanctimony and obstreperous clowns.

In a simple thing as this, straight forwardness is all we need, if you claim to be the champion of the people. How do you weed out corruption if you can't be transparent.

The army says your record isn't with them. Did they swallow up the record? Tales are rife about people who got into the police force and army with forged and fake certificates at that time when digital records weren't available. Even university.

Please don't take us for fools.

Oga Buhari if you are su you went to secondary school bring your credentials or an affidavit if you've lost them or even photocopies. For the sake of Posterity, this is not the kind of Change I want to pass on to the next generation. Nobody applies for a job and refers the company to his previous employer for his credentials. We have been clamouring fro it and it's here. A corrupt man like Pa Buhari who subverted the will of the people, who toppled a democratic system of govt 31st December 1983 and 30 yrs later he's coming for that same democracy.I want to believe this is pure madness! It is unimaginable. This man committed felony. And in a civilised society,he ought to be in jail.Felony is the worst crime in the land of any nation. Pa Buhari has no business with our democracy cos he is coming to destroy it. #GEJtill2019

  134. The robustness of the defence astounds me. But it does not provide answers to what has become a challenge on the morality of a change that we so desperately require. That change cannot be built on falsehood. The onus in on GMB and the APC to show proof that there is a certificate and if there is none we should be told in clear and unequivocal terms. It is irrelevant that GMB has contested several times, even less relevant is the fact that is the fact that he has attended several training programs in the past. The general is the representative of a change movement that seeks to correct all that is wrong with our national life. He can't remain in that position if he is so severely damaged. He becomes a target for members of his party, the opposition and even the international community. If we must institute change, now is the time. Let us lay the facts clean and commence this journey on a sound footing.

The nation and its people deserve that respect. I will be careful defending anyone because I have seen what goes on in this country. 12 years ago, UNIBEN decided to do a verification of all WAEC result of students and the outcome was shocking: students, even in their final year had their admission withdrawn, for falsification of result!!! If that could happen 12 years ago in southern Nigeria, I wonder what would be have happened in northern Nigeria 53 years ago!!! The Salisu Buhari saga is still quite fresh; forging certificate to get to the 4th highest political position of the land!I see the situation as part of strengthening institution in a corrupt country!!! WAEC has a record, its the examination body, why is no body talking about them? Or was there no WAEC in 1961? For APC releasing a long statement it means they are dodging thereal iissue.

  148. We,Nigerian's youths should not let any unfavorable dubious and devious group of people in an unfavorable bad political party confuse us with baseless issue of certificate to follow and vote a credible candidate that will change the history of this good nation from bad to good. It was high time to turn the tables of politics of self centeredness where the minority enslaves the majority, where the minority is enjoying and the hoi polloi is suffering from what generally belongs to us all. PDP has spent sixteen years in power. What Nigerian masses have got or gained from it? What have u and I benefited from its governance? Well,we benefit Massa, massacre, darkness from power sector, money laundering, promising the moon, fuel increment and the related things.Nigerians, free your minds from the issue of ethnicity, tribalism and religion which the politicians normally use as a political intrigue to confuse the electorship. And also, don't let any religious leader that has been bribed change your mind from the pulpit as the pew to vote for the right candidate!!! You,I and our children and unborn ones will not suffer till death comes ooo. Nigerians,be wise!!!

Secondly what's the minimum qualification to contest for the presidency , does he have it? Lastly , This is the 4th time GMB is contesting, how come the issue of certificate was not raised. We are educated therefore must be able to read in between the lines...this is absolutely a distraction . Vote wisely...your destiny is in your hand!

  157. Good day to you all. This country, Nigeria, is greater than everyone of us. We youth should realize the strength of emotion we lend to the issue of politicking regarding this election. We all have to be frank and at the same time be very careful about the game we are playing for the future of this country. We all need to look into the eyes of our children, the innocence embedded in those eyes informs the need to crave for a brilliant future.

Just because of winning an election, many an institutions are getting heated up or on the verge of destruction. Care need be taken my brethren. We should not let history repeat itself, selfishness beget mayhem, which result to war.

This is the submission of the constitution on certificates:

Section 131 states: “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; (b) he has attained the age of forty (40) years; (c )he is a member of a political party; and (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.

“In Section 318, School certificate or equivalent means (a) a Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent, or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate, the City and Guilds Certificate; or (b) education up to Secondary School Certificate level; or

“(c) Primary Six School Leaving Certificate or its equivalent and (i) service in the public or private sector in the Federation in any capacity acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) for a minimum of 10 years; and

“(ii) attendance at courses and training in such institutions as may be acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission for periods totalling up to a minimum of one year, and

“(iii) the ability to read, write, understand and communicate in the English Language to the satisfaction of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); and

“(d) Any other qualification acceptable by INEC.”

Again, Nigeria military is an institution established to foster unity in the country but dragging it into politics will be dangerous for this country. At this time in the history of this country for a military to release a press conference with this a statement, "that there was no evidence that the certificates of all those who joined the army in the early 1960s were verified by the selection board", is dangerous and worrisome.

Should we destroy an institution like Nigeria Army because we want to win an election of just 4 years term. Unnnnh unh, those who have ears should listen. A word they say is enough for the wise.
