Pics: Protest by post-graduate students of UNN over hike in tuition fees

Post-graduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, barricaded the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Ozumba, in protest against hike in their tuition fees, describing
the increase from N69,000 to N145,000 as outrageous.

The placard-carrying protesters, numbering over 200, marched round the school and barricaded the VC’s office.

The students say “To us, the increment is outrageous. We are not against any increment, but it should be reasonable. It is not fair to increase the fees for a session of nine months from N69,000 to N145,000. Where do they expect us to get that kind of money? We will continue this protest until the university reduces it. I do not think it is a crime for one to further his education in UNN.”

The Dean of Post-Graduate School, Professor A. Ubachukwu, addressed the students, saying that:
“Government does not give any allocation for postgraduate school as it is assumed that post-graduate students are adult and can pay cost for their education. I use my personal money at times to run the PG school. I have been talking with some of your leaders on this issue for some time now and we compared notes with other universities before the increment on PG school fees was made.”

  61. U guys do not understand what is going on here. A PG programme that's meant to last for 18months last as long as 3-7years no joke cos I'm a student. Do u also know dat we follow thesame school calendar as the undergraduate which means that every session u get to pay another school fees till ur dept releases u. Don't get me wrong here,I'm not saying they shldnt increase the school fees,if they have to increase it then 18months should be 18months like u have in Unilag nd Unilorin so dat students won't have to pay unnecessary school fees every year. Well diariz God....

  73. Bartho Okolo was an exceptional VC who was known for singlehandedly funding the PG school by soliciting for funds outside the university's internally generated revenue. This VC had better have intitiaive and vision to match his. Increasing the tuition fees isn't the problem, its showing what those funds have been used for that counts.

  79. The new Vc is not fit to be one: reducing the fees of foreign PG students and increasing that of Nigerians. saying the fee will among other things be used to organise banquet with PG students.
it take as much as 3 to 7 years to complete a PG programme in Unn, paying fees for every year u stay. the system is so bad dat a lecturer can takes as much as 2 months to read a chapter of your thesis. Prof Ozurumba is nt an intellect but a politician

  87. THIS FEE IS OUTRAGEOUS. INCREMENT IS A GRADUAL PROCESS. AND ANY INCREMENT SHOULD BE BACKED UP WITH CONCRETE REASONS.
THE PRESENT VC CANNOT ACHIEVE GREATNESS BY INCREASING THE FEE. HE SHOULD FIRST OF ALL SANITIZE THE SYSTEM.THE APPROACH IS NOT THE BEST ONE/ EVEN IF U R TO INCREASE,IT SHOULDN'T BE MORE THAN 6K, WHICH SHOULD EVEN BE WELL JUSTIFIED...
