Dear LIB readers: My wife opens her breast in public to feed our baby and it annoys me

My wife and I just had our first child together and as is expected, she
must have to breastfeed the baby but the annoying thing is that she
brings out her breast to breastfeed him anywhere he cries for food and
she doesn't even do it with any shame. Last Sunday my boss came visiting
with his sons to greet our baby and as we were in my parlor talking, our
son cried and immediately my wife just brought out her whole breast.
Even my MD was embarrassed. I have told her repeatedly but she says what
should she do? Shay she would not breastfeed her child again and that I
am just "forming" unnecessarily. Abeg am I forming or is it normal for
me to be angry?
that is one thing my wife will never do ..she will even scold her sisters if she see them doing it..she will just carefully cover her breast with cloth and feed the baby..some women shai...them feel say if dem don born, he don finish b that...smmmmmmmmmmmmmh

They are shawls that can be used or even common headtie you can place it with style to cover your boobs. Exposing your booby is just a big no no. I'm a nursing mother and I can't expose my breast in public or on the presence of people other than my husband, close family members(mom,sisters,aunts,sister in law) and female friends. Once a guest is around I leave for the nursery or my room. I pump to feed outside or if I have to breastfeed outside, I park my car where people can't see me and feed my baby. For those that don't have cars, get nursing bras and use flannels to cover. It's not eight to expose yourself like that in public.
Your vexation is not out of place. Asides emergency or no convenient place around,I don't normally feel comfortable when a woman pulls out her breast in the public to feed her baby. Since its not for us all why make it public. Try make her see reasons with you.
I have a 7 months baby and never brought out my breast in public. .I express in bottles for feeding outside. got the nursing cover but never used it as my baby got used to not breastfeeding in public. It's very annoying to see women do it in this era and time. .Please make her friends talk to her. .not nice at all. ..
Also, I don't know the availability of theses things in Nigeria, but you can also buy her breast pumps to pump out her breast milk and refrigerate, she can then heat it up a little and feed it to the baby whenever it is hungry in the presence of guests. I also watched a feature depicting attitude in new mothers; her actions and general nonchalant attitude towards exposing her breasts to breastfeed could be an after effect of childbirth because some mothers, especially first-time mothers have been known to just stop caring about stuff like that and lose all form of inhibitions and only focus on their new baby. Her hormones would be all over the place and her body just went through some mega change. Try to be understanding with her in all of this. Also, you can buy her a nursing bra if you guys don't have microwave or means of preserving pumped breastmilk. It will help her avoid exposing her whole breast while feeding the baby.
Anon 10:34pm, she's not complaining, she's quite contented to whip everything out as long as her baby is well-fed. Since the husband is the one uncomfortable with it, he can buy any of those things for her just as a show of his care and willingness to help her with this issue. Also the fact that he goes out to get them for her will make her feel obligated to utilize them. It'll also show to her that they are in this together, He's giving her a solution instead of just complaining and demanding, Because judging from your comment, if you're s guy then your wife probably lacks that level of love and consideration from you and if you're female, you probably lack those from your hubby too; the realization alone that some husbands out there don't do that for their wives will make her appreciate him more.
I'm a mother. Ask her to wear loose tops and nursing bra that will allow her to feed the child by bringing out the breast/nipple from underneath and not above her blouse. Allternatively, she can cover her breast with a flannel while feeding the child if she still feels more comfortable feeding from on top rather than underneath. I personally find the boob exposing act annoying and will not expect such from any literate woman.

There is nothing wrong in feeding a child. but in the situation u highlighted , she should have just excused herself and go to the room to feed the baby , she must not do that in d public .but in situation where she can not help it then thee is nothing to be angry about and she must not bring out the whole breast to feed the child. the child just needs the nipple to suck on.

She needs to be discreet. And she should respect "your property" because that's one of the reasons you're not happy. It's not because the baby has come to share your toll. I think you're ok with that. It's sharing that personal intimate aspect she has for you, and making it public property. As a man, I too wouldnt be pleased. All she needs is a shawl. If she is at home she can easily go elswhere to do the breast feeding. And if you people are out i think there is a way women wrap the child up and protect the view from the public. But if there is no other option then you can't allow your child to starve right? just try and understand with her for now. Mr oga, instead of complaining, buy her a breastfeeding cover and breast pump plus feeding bottles. That way u have provided a solution. Also, talk to her in a sensitive way, letting her know ur reasons for not liking public breastfeeding. Trust me if ur approach, is that it annoys u, being a woman, that's wen she will do it d more. She should excuse her self when ever she wants to breastfeed after all she's in her house she could go into d room to do and when she's out of d house a handkie could be place to cover her boobs or look for somewhere a bit private don't like it wen ladies expoee their boobs all in d name of av given birth

I am female. But it upset me when I see a woman do that. Cos ur breastfeeding does not mean you should expose ur self any where anyhow. It's so uncultured of a woman, she can use a veil or something to cover if she is in public and the baby is in dear need to be fed.

She should get a breast feeding cover from simplyinfant.com or on olx. Most Nigerian mothers aren't aware there is something called breastfeeding cover.
She doesn't need to breastfeed in front of ppl, she can go somewhere private, or use a cloth to cover up. They make those things, can't remember what it's called again. Talk to her and make her see reason, she's your wife.
She can breastfeed in public without necessarily exposing her breast, she should get a shawl which she will keep handy when carrying the baby.Also there are breastfeeding veil she can get, maybe you will need to help her get one.
lol! It is really no big deal, but not all men like that, though it can be done with some courtesy, she should cover the top of her breast with the baby's fannel of buy a breastfeeding apron that can be worn round the neck while feeding the baby

She should get a breast feeding cover. It is between 2000 to 4000naira depending on where you buy it. It's like an apron and covers completely and doesn't affect baby adversely. Now, she will have no excuse. Its common place but i hate it too even though i'm a woman

Yes, our parents and those before them did breastfeed openly without any care in the world. But today things have changed a lot and those things dt were norms in the past are now mostly taboos. I would advice that the lady in question cover up with a scarf when breastfeeding while making sure there is enough air reaching the baby. There are cases in Europe where mothers are walked out of restaurants and other public places when they breastfeed even with a cover. A lot of embarrassing situations can be avoided like the case of the boss. She should also be made to understand dt there are a lot of perverted people out there. I'm not judging but just lending my own piece of advice.

There are women who refuse to nurture their kids and give them bottles at stages too early because "they don't want to show their boobs". Grow up, its just boobs. I also watched a feature depicting attitude in new mothers; her actions and general nonchalant attitude towards exposing her breasts to breastfeed could be an after effect of childbirth because some mothers, especially first-time mothers have been known to just stop caring about stuff like that and lose all form of inhibitions and only focus on their new baby. Her hormones would be all over the place and her body just went through some mega change. Try to be understanding with her in all of this. Also, you can buy her a nursing bra if you guys don't have microwave or means of preserving pumped breastmilk. It will help her avoid exposing her whole breast while feeding the baby.

Since the husband is the one uncomfortable with it, he can buy any of those things for her just as a show of his care and willingness to help her with this issue. Also the fact that he goes out to get them for her will make her feel obligated to utilize them. It'll also show to her that they are in this together, He's giving her a solution instead of just complaining and demanding, Because judging from your comment, if you're s guy then your wife probably lacks that level of love and consideration from you and if you're female, you probably lack those from your hubby too; the realization alone that some husbands out there don't do that for their wives will make her appreciate him more.

ReplyDeleteI'm a mother. Ask her to wear loose tops and nursing bra that will allow her to feed the child by bringing out the breast/nipple from underneath and not above her blouse. Allternatively, she can cover her breast with a flannel while feeding the child if she still feels more comfortable feeding from on top rather than underneath. I personally find the boob exposing act annoying and will not expect such from any literate woman.

ReplyDeleteI would advice that the lady in question cover up with a scarf when breastfeeding while making sure there is enough air reaching the baby. There are cases in Europe where mothers are walked out of restaurants and other public places when they breastfeed even with a cover.

Once we had guests I always excused myself to go in and breastfeed our baby. So there s a way to go abt it not just bringin it out anywhere in d name of feeding d baby! Afterall, it s ur property, u just borrow ur baby ni!

Oh please shut the hell up and be grateful for having an amazing wife! I'm pretty sure she doesn't expose the whole thing and this dude is just overreacting. There are women who refuse to nurture their kids and give them bottles at stages too early because "they don't want to show their boobs". Grow up, its just boobs. Boobs are on TV and everywhere else everyday. Its not a forbidden sight.

ReplyDeleteLet's stop calling the poor husband names, he feels bad about something and the wife should try to adjust for everyone to be happy, I mean what will it cost her to just cover up and still get the baby fed? Women package urself abeg and don't give the impression that bcos uv had a baby you should do anything all in the name of breastfeeding. As much as you are that baby's mum, you still have a role to play as a wife and that includes putting your husbands feelings into consideration. I find it very embarrassing when some women bring out their whole breast to feed and dem go still dey gist normal na u go help dem shame.

I remember when my hubby and I went to see a friend that just had a baby and as we dey gist the baby started crying, for our very eye dis babe just callout her breast!! Big black worwor breast, we were too shocked and embarrassed but we just form nothing dey happen.
